WHAT IS A HYDROXYL ?

• Hydroxyls (HO ) are naturally occurring free radicals∙

• Created in our atmosphere when the Sun’s ultraviolet light reacts with oxygen, ozone and water vapor– Activated oxygen species cleave an ‘H’ atom from H20 generating HO· – UV absorption of H20 also causes loss of an ‘H’ atom generating HO·

• HO is the most important cleansing agent in our environment∙– Steady state concentration 500,000 to 2.6 million molecules / cm3

– Keeps air “fresh” - decomposes organic & inorganic compounds– Kills pathogens in air, porous materials and on surfaces – Creates a cascade of other free radical oxidants that also help cleanse

Atmospheric Chemical Removal Process

• Any process that consumes methane (CH₄) from the atmosphere can be considered a "sink" of atmospheric methane. The most prominent of these processes occur as a result of methane either being destroyed in the atmosphere or broken down in soil.
