Green Tech TeenCorps: A Growing Experience by

Morgan Schrankel

Former Service Learning Coordinator

This past year, I have had the pleasure of coordinating the TeenCorps Program at Green Tech High Charter School. Four high school seniors participated in this very intensive AmeriCorps program. The ACE Office at Siena College provides the administrative support for the success of this program, although the majority of the work is done by the students. Upon completing a 300 hour community service commitment, each student will receive a Segal Education Award to assist with future college expenses.

TeenCorps students at Green Tech serve as mentors to their peers. From leading students at service projects, to creating projects to benefit Green Tech as a whole, the TeenCorps students are always busy. This past year, the students have served at Halloween Extravaganza, A Taste of Albany, Boys and Girls Club, the Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless Drop-In Center, Equinox’s Annual Thanksgiving Dinner, as well as many other events and opportunities. In addition to serving 8-10 hours a week in the community, participants also attend weekly training and enrichment meetings. Training topics range from professionalism, resume writing, budgeting, and reflection. Some incorporate activities while others are discussion focused. It has been a real pleasure to coordinate and run these meetings. I have had the opportunity to witness these students grow from boys to young men. There have been many highlights throughout the year. I was very proud of my students as they

represented Green Tech at the Siena College Community Forum 2.0. Although they did not quite understand the purpose of the event going in, they were very eager to bring information that they learned back to share with their peers. It is little moments like these that have made this program unlike anything else I have ever been a part of.For all of them, this opportunity has just been the beginning. Na-Shawn Joseph’s plan after graduation: “is to share [his] information

to the community and start more of a community clean up”. Anthony Wallace admits that, “beforehand [he] was not so willing to take the time out to help others. Now that [he] has seen the faces [of the recipients of his service work], he is a lot more grateful for doing this program”. All four students will be attending a four-year college or university this fall.

OTHER SERVICE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Green Tech requires all students to have accomplished 100 hours of community service by their graduation date. The class of 2014 has 100% service hours completion rate.

Thank you to all community partners. The class of 2014 would have never been able to become agents of change within our community without your help.

!Amongst our partners you'll find... Siena College YMCA Boys and Girls Club Interfaith Partnership for the Homeless University at Albany Albany Public Library many more , and many more to come!

SUMMER FUNJune 13 marked the beginning of a new chapter for Green Tech. We held our first annual Green Tech Honors the Community.

Many organizations and community members were publicly thanked for their never ending support to the school. The event had music, dancing, food, a silent auction, and so much more. The event took place at the University at Albany Ballroom from six to ten PM. All proceeds went to Green Tech High Charter school. Some of the awards were Outstanding Humanitarian Co-teachers of the year, acknowledgment to those that have been a huge part of Green Tech’s Development and many more. Green Tech’s staff and students are thrilled and cannot wait for another successful event next year.

• • •Green Tech high has a reputation of giving students more than just the education of a lifetime . Green Tech High had a 100% rate of college acceptance for the Class of 2014, which is in line with the previous graduation cohorts. Compared to previous years, this year exuded 26%

of our students receiving an Advanced Regents diploma. There were thirty-one students accepted into four-year institutions, which represented 50% of the class, proving that they are pros in both the classrooms and the athletic arena. As you may already know Green Tech High won its first “NYS Boys class AA Title” . Additionally, the Class of 2014 has outperformed the previous classes by the amount of scholarship funding awarded. Statistically the Class of 2012 was awarded $20,000, the Class of 2013, $300,000, and the Class of 2014 was awarded over $1,000,000, combined, in scholarships and grants. It is clear that Green Tech has given students more than an education, it has

given them the tools for success.
