THE STATE OF THE MARKET FOR EH&S SOFTWARE

Over the last 40 years, a wide range of environmental, health and safety (EH&S) regulations have been

implemented in the world’s largest economies. Developed economies with democratic governments such as

Australia, Canada, Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States lead efforts to protect the environment,

ensure workers’ safety and align business operations with scientifically-based public health requirements. Large

developing economies with significant industrial sectors are also implementing EH&S regulations in the wake of

disasters such as the Tianjin explosion in China and the Samarco dam collapse in Brazil, both of which caused

multiple fatalities as well as environmental pollution.

This report provides individuals responsible for selecting, implementing and getting value from EH&S software

with a detailed benchmark of the 22 leading solutions available on the market. These individuals include

executives in EH&S, safety, IT, operations, finance and sustainability roles. Their questions include:

Which EH&S software solutions lead the market and will meet the business requirements of my firm?

How can I benchmark the features and functionality of EH&S applications and assess the ability of the

suppliers to deliver?

What budget should I allocate to an EH&S software investment?

To answer these questions, Verdantix assessed 22 suppliers through a 185-point questionnaire, executive

interviews, and a two-hour live product demonstration of each product. We also interviewed 15 buyers of EH&S

software located in six countries, representing eight industries, with collective annual revenues of $752 billion.

The resulting analysis is based on the proprietary Verdantix Green Quadrant methodology designed to provide

an evidence-based, objective assessment of suppliers providing comparable products or services.

The Rise Of Risk-Centric EH&S Platforms Reflects Market Maturity And

Financial Investment

The market for EH&S software grew as a result of hard-hitting EH&S regulations introduced from the 1970s

onwards, and the rise of IT departments and enterprise software in the 1990s. From the early 2000s, software

suppliers offering lower cost hosted software ‘in the cloud’ expanded the market by reducing price points,

speeding up innovation cycles and delivering more configurable systems (see Figure 1). Since the prior Green

Quadrant report (see Verdantix Green Quadrant EH&S Software 2014), key drivers shaping the market consist of

the:

Growing impact of private equity and venture capital on innovation.

Since April 2014, venture capital and private equity firms have invested a total of $220 million in EH&S

software vendors. While some of the cash is used to buy out shareholders, the bulk is provided as

working capital to hire more staff, improve products and expand marketing. The size of funds getting

into the EH&S segment has also increased, with the likes of Battery Ventures ($3.8 billion fund), Inflexion

($2.7 billion fund) and JMI Equity ($1.9 billion fund) entering, as the profile of investors has switched from

risk capital to growth capital.

Increasing customer preference for integrated EH&S platforms.

Historically, firms have tended to purchase point solutions to solve specific challenges such as

compliance with air emissions regulations in the United States, or meeting injury reporting requirements

in North Sea oil fields. Now and in the future, the majority of customers plan to buy integrated EH&S

platforms because they recognize that this is best practice and such platforms are now better designed

and more widely available. Customers are also experienced enough to discern the difference between

buying multiple applications from one vendor and buying an integrated application.

Product strategies that connect EH&S compliance data to risk management.

Software vendors realize that selling a pure compliance solution puts a lid on their value proposition,

average deal size and profitability. Seeking better prospects and responding to customer requests, they

have developed EH&S platforms that aggregate data from multiple EH&S workflows – incident reporting,

near miss data, safety processes, environmental spills – into a single database which can be queried to

inform risk management decisions. This innovative approach which we refer to as ‘operational risk

management’ has significant potential, but is in its infancy.

Influence of ecosystem development on vendor growth rates and success.

Expanding the value proposition from fixing specific safety or environmental compliance issues requires a

broad set of regulatory data and process expertise. Recognizing that owning and delivering everything is

a considerable undertaking, the software vendors have put in place regulatory content partnerships with

the likes of 3E Company and safety data sheet providers SiteHawk. They also work collaboratively with

the leading EH&S information management consulting firms: AECOM, Arcadis, CH2M and ERM.

Rise of mobile apps as an opportunity and a threat.

Three years ago, few vendors had native mobile apps to offer their customers. The customer demand was

not there. Now, vendors without a mobile app designed for all three major mobile operating systems and

which operates offline and synchronizes with the server-based application, are at a severe competitive

disadvantage. Not simply because they miss out on the product innovation lessons to be gleaned from

visionaries and technology enthusiasts, but because they face new threats from mobile-first or mobile-

only EH&S software solutions, such as Zayfti and ‘Job Safety Analysis’ from BreathThrough Apps.

IMPROVING EH&S INFORMATION MANAGEMENT IS A GLOBAL

PRIORITY

To gain an in-depth insight into the specific functionality requirements and purchase preferences for EH&S

software, Verdantix interviewed an independent panel of budget holders in 15 global firms with over $500

million revenue. Industries represented include: basic resources, construction and materials, high-tech

engineering, industrial engineering, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, and utilities. Within these

organizations, we spoke with decision-makers responsible for EH&S software purchase decisions and usage

strategies.

Enhancing EH&S Information Management Is A Key Priority

Verdantix asked members of the customer panel to explain their motivation for investing in EH&S software. We

aggregated these findings with what we heard from the 312 EH&S decision-makers in our global survey of

EH&S senior managers (see Verdantix Global EH&S Leaders Survey 2015: Budgets And Priorities). Our decision-

maker interviews find that:

Improving EH&S information management is high on the agenda for firms across the globe.

Eighty-five per cent of respondents to the Verdantix global survey categorized improving EH&S

information management in the next 12 months as either a high or moderate priority (see Figure 2).

Members of the customer panel noted that increasing visibility into EH&S information management is

vital, particularly for large firms with operations dispersed around the globe.

Prioritization Of EH&S Information Management Improvement

F IGU RE 2

“We have a lot of ambition to add new modules for waste management, job hazard analysis and

ergonomics. This ties in with our aim for industry best practice.” (Industrial Engineering firm)

Low levels of EH&S software adoption point to widespread use of paper log books, email and

Excel.

A significant number of firms still manage their EH&S data via multiple spreadsheets, custom-built

databases or on paper. In the Verdantix global survey, we asked respondents to describe the usage and

deployment scale of third-party EH&S software at their firms. We heard that employee and contractor

safety is the EH&S impact area that software is most widely utilized for, deployed by 30% of firms (see

Figure 3). Just 14% of respondents utilize software for water and wastewater management, with 9%, 3%

and 2% of those deployments being at the enterprise, business unit/division and facility level,

respectively.

“We use a paper-based system at the moment, which obviously has huge drawbacks. Only one person

can look at one piece of paper at one time. Even worse, there are huge transitional challenges when

EH&S supervisors join or leave the company.” (Pharmaceutical firm)

Non-compliance events pile the pressure on firms to improve EH&S processes with software.

Firms feel the heat from internal and external stakeholders to more effectively manage their EH&S

processes. The financial and reputational risks associated with major incidents and non-compliance can

be huge. Mining giants BHP Billiton and Vale face preliminary fines of $5 billion after a burst dam in

November 2015 at a joint venture in Brazil, resulting in the flattening of a local village, toxic pollution of a

major river and death of at least thirteen people.

“Being a mining firm the environmental risks we face are monstrous, for our brand reputation as well

as operations. So we are redoubling our efforts to improve our EH&S performance by using

software.” (Basic Resources firm)

Better Risk Management Tops The List Of Business Case Drivers For EH&S

Software

Firms have a big appetite to invest in third-party EH&S software to overcome their information challenges.

When Verdantix asked members of the customer panel about the importance of different factors in shaping the

business case for EH&S software, we heard that:

Reducing operational risk is the most important factor shaping the business case.

Firms seek to reframe EH&S in the context of operational risk management. Ninety-three per cent of the

customer panel said reducing operational risk was very important or important for shaping the business

case for investing in EH&S software (see Figure 4). Customers increasingly look to harness tools for risk

assessment and root cause analysis to proactively manage EH&S risks.

“We need a system that has EH&S, compliance and enterprise risk all in one system because they are

so interlinked. In the future we want to use predictive analytics to reduce down time and prevent events

before they happen.” (Basic Resources firm)

Mitigating regulatory risk is the second most important priority for firms.

The tangled web of evolving EH&S regulations means that fulfilling compliance remains a key factor for

firms investing in software, with 93% of customer panel respondents citing reducing regulatory risk as a

very important or important factor for shaping the business case for EH&S software. In response, a

number of software vendors have developed partnerships with dedicated EH&S regulatory content

providers, such as 3E Company and Enhesa, to help customers track regulatory changes and their

applicability.

“Compliance is still the biggest issue for us. The sheer volume of regulations globally and the rate at

which they change means we can’t keep track just using in-house resources.” (Pharmaceutical firm)

Saving time on EH&S data collection and aggregation is a significant tangible benefit.

As well as a tighter grasp of operational and regulatory risk, firms justify their investment in EH&S

software with cost savings from more efficient data management processes. Ninety-two per cent of the

customer panel stated that saving time on data collection and aggregation was either a very important or

important factor in shaping the business case for EH&S software.

“One of the biggest benefits [from the incident management software] is having a single source

repository for all our reporting. We have previously relied on over eight business analysts to gather,

consolidate and report our compliance data.” (Oil & Gas firm)

A More Strategic Business Case For EH&S Software Results In Increased

Spending

As well as fulfilling compliance and reporting requirements, firms increasingly invest in EH&S software to

enhance risk management. In order to gauge purchasing trends, we asked firms to describe how they expect

their spending on EH&S software will change over the next 12 months. Verdantix heard that:

Spending on EH&S software is expected to increase or stay the same.

According to our global survey, 39% of EH&S decision-makers expect an increase in spending on

commercial EH&S management software over the next year, with 5% forecasting double-digit increases

(see Figure 5). Fifty-nine per cent of respondents forecast spending on EH&S software will remain the

same, with just 2% expecting a reduction in spending.

Deal sizes typically range from $100,000 to $300,000, but can exceed $5 million.

We heard from EH&S software suppliers that the majority of deals in the last 12 months have fallen

within the $100,000 to $300,000 bracket. For enterprise software, the average deal size remains small, at

$160,000. The 22 suppliers have booked at least 60 deals over $1 million, including seven in excess of $5

million. This reflects a growing trend towards larger deals.

Firms forecast a robust increase in spending on EH&S software. When we asked the customer panel to describe

the most important factors in shaping purchase decisions, we heard that customers prioritize:

User interface design as the number one buying criterion.

For the second year running, members of the customer panel selected the quality of the user interface as

the most important factor influencing a purchase decision, with 93% ranking it very important or

important (see Figure 6). Buyers put a premium on solutions that are simple to navigate, align with

evolving best practices for user interface design, get away from a boring text and table format, and

minimize the requirement for extensive user onboarding.

“The user interface needs to be simple and easy to use because any of our employees should in theory be

able to use it. Not just the HSE specialists. From the demos we have seen, Intelex has the best

UI.” (Pharmaceutical firm)

Comprehensive and integrated EH&S platforms that cover all workflows.

Eighty-six per cent of the customer panel said it was very important or important to have a platform that

can cover the full breadth of EH&S workflows. Customers want to move away from deploying multiple

best-of-breed solutions for different EH&S impact areas and instead implement a platform from a single

vendor with multiple modules for specific environmental, health, and safety capabilities.

“Currently we have solutions from five separate vendors because historically different vendors had

different strengths. We plan to pull all our EH&S information onto a single platform. You need all

the data integrated and visible in one solution to do insightful analytics and decipher root

causes.” (Pharmaceutical firm)

Configurable software that empowers users and reduces services fees.

The members of the customer panel emphasized their desire for flexible solutions, with 73% saying the

configurability of the software is either very important or important. Customers noted that the ability to

update forms, change business rules and manipulate workflow formed a key part of their product

evaluations. Rigid product architecture can result in back and forth engagements with consultants and

subsequently costly delays.

“Our current solution is dismal in terms of configuration. You have to export everything to Excel to

create graphs and charts. Intelex and Enablon are light years ahead in terms of being able to configure

reports and get valuable information out [of the system].” (Industrial Engineering firm)

Availability of mobile apps with offline capability.

Almost half of the customer panel said the quality of a vendor’s mobile apps impacts the purchase

decision, with 47% declaring it very important or important. Although mobile apps are not yet extensively

utilized by the majority of firms, customers anticipate increasingly using them for audits, inspections and

incident reporting in offline environments. The first question buyers ask is about the availability of offline

Depth

Customers require software that is intuitive to navigate, provides the breadth of EH&S workflow and is easy for

system administrators to configure without incurring consulting fees. When we asked the customer panel to

evaluate the challenges they encounter using EH&S software, they criticize software vendors for:

Insufficient out-of-the-box templates and content.

Customers react positively to the flexibility provided by the more configurable solutions suppliers have

been developing, but criticize the lack of pre-built functionality. According to these customers, the

absence of ready-to-use reports, templates and access to regulatory content results in lengthy and costly

engagements with consultants to get functional systems up and running.

“At the moment most vendors are selling the emperor’s new clothes under the guise of configurability.

They should have more complete solutions ready to use out-of-the-box, with embedded workflows based

on industry best-practise.” (Construction & Materials firm)

Preferences For Different Types Of Implementation Providers

F IGU RE 9

Prefer to engage with established EH&S software providers.

The customer panel stated that they would prefer to buy solutions from small and medium-sized

software vendors, rather than larger providers. Ninety-four per cent of the customer panel ranked an

EH&S software vendor with 100 to 500 employees as their first or second choice of supplier (see Figure

7). Customers’ least favoured providers were environmental consultants, the corporate IT function and IT

consultants.

“Your voice gets lost when working with the very large IT vendors. With the smaller vendors you have

more chance of getting the changes you need done. Since we moved to a smaller vendor it has been like

night and day.” (Basic Resources firm)

Register the highest level of brand preference and engagements with SAP, Enablon, IHS and

Medgate.

The Verdantix global survey of 312 EH&S decision-makers demonstrates that the EH&S community

generally has low awareness of EH&S software brands aside from a half dozen providers (see Verdantix

Global EH&S Survey 2015: EH&S Software Brands). When we asked the survey respondents to describe

their perspective on 22 EH&S software suppliers, we heard that SAP, Enablon, IHS and Medgate have the

highest level of brand preference, with 52%, 25%, 25% and 21% of respondents, respectively, already

engaged or expressing an intent to engage with these vendors (see Figure 8).

“We are currently in the process of looking to replace our in-house system with specialist third-party

EH&S software. We have identified and shortlisted Enablon, IHS, Intelex and SAP as the leading

candidates.” (Pharmaceutical firm)

Aim to steer clear of IT consultants during the implementation process.

The trend for EH&S software vendors developing more configurable EH&S solutions is affecting firms’

implementation strategies. The customer panel told us that they prefer to implement EH&S using a

combination of in-house IT and the software supplier’s resources. Forty-seven per cent and 33% of the

customer panel ranked the EH&S software supplier and the corporate IT function as their top choice of

system implementer, respectively (see Figure 9). No members of the customer panel selected IT

consultants as their preferred implementation partner, citing a general lack of domain expertise in EH&S.

“I don’t want to have to spend a fortune on IT consultants like Accenture or Infosys, especially as they

often lack subject matter expertise. We get more value from the likes of AECOM or CH2M who know

our risk profile.” (Construction & Materials firm)

GREEN QUADRANT EH&S SOFTWARE

Buyers of EH&S software from multiple industries and different countries seek configurable solutions that meet

the needs created by local regulations, EH&S impact areas and business challenges. Based on discussions with

industry experts and interviews with the customer panel, we define EH&S software as:

Enterprise-scale software that enables firms to capture, analyse and report data, manage risks and

improve business performance across the full range of environmental, health and safety business

processes and impact areas.

This definition does not include software designed to be deployed on a site-by-site basis, desktop software,

applications used for regulatory content management, product compliance software or applications with a

focus on a single impact area such as carbon management, injury reporting or water quality assessment.

Green Quadrant Methodology

The Verdantix Green Quadrant methodology provides buyers of specific products or services with a structured

assessment of comparable offerings at a certain point in time. The methodology supports purchase decisions by

identifying potential suppliers, structuring relevant purchase criteria through discussions with buyers and

providing an evidence-based assessment of the products or services in the market. To ensure the objectivity of

the results of the study, the research process is based on the following principles and activities:

Transparent inclusion.

We aim to analyse all providers that qualify for inclusion in the research. For those providers that decline

our invitation or fail to respond, we aim to include them in the report based on public information where

this would provide an accurate analysis of their market positioning.

Analysis from the buyer’s perspective.

We recruit a panel of individuals who have bought or plan to buy the services analysed in the Green

Quadrant. Their role is to define relevant buying criteria and to weight the evaluation criteria in the

model that drives the Green Quadrant graphic.

Reliance on professional integrity.

Since it is not feasible to check all of the data and claims made by providers, we emphasize the need for

professional integrity. Assertions made by providers are put in the public domain in the Verdantix report

and can be checked by competitors and existing customers.

Scores based on evidence.

To assess the expertise, resources, business results and strategy of providers we gather evidence from

public sources and conduct interviews with multiple spokespeople and with industry experts. When

providers claim to be ‘best in class’ we challenge them to present the evidence.

Comparison based on relative capabilities.

We construct measurement scales based on ‘worst-in-class’ and ‘best-in-class’ performance at a certain

point in time. A provider’s position in the market can change over time depending on how its offering

and success evolves compared to competitors. Green Quadrants are typically repeated every one to two

years.

Evaluated Firms: Selection Criteria

To ensure the Green Quadrant analysis only compares firms providing similar services, we define inclusion

criteria. The 22 software suppliers included in this study were chosen because their applications have:

Enterprise-scale product architecture.

This study only considers applications designed to scale up to multi-country, multi-site deployments for

an enterprise with more than $1 billion in annual revenues. All suppliers provided evidence of at least one

customer implementation with more than 1000 users in at least 10 countries.

Broad EH&S management functionality.

Reflecting the overall direction of customer buying criteria, we only included suppliers with applications

that could meet multiple EH&S business requirements. This eliminated applications providing only

environmental management or only health and safety management functionality.

In addition to the product-related inclusion criteria, Verdantix also applied supplier-related assessment criteria.

For inclusion in the study, suppliers must have:

At least 10 named customers for their EH&S software.

With new entrants coming into the EH&S market, we purposefully set the customer bar low, but excluded

suppliers who could not name their EH&S customers in double-digits.

Resources to deliver a broad EH&S suite.

With customers increasingly seeking a single provider for their EH&S technology platform, we focused

the study on suppliers with the human, financial and technology resources to meet the needs of

customers in the next two years.

Based on the four inclusion criteria, this report includes 22 EH&S software suppliers: Airsweb, CMO, cr360, DNV

GL, EMEX, Enablon, Enviance, EtQ, Gensuite, IHS, Intelex, IsoMetrix, Locus Technologies, Medgate, MetricStream,

Perillon, ProcessMAP, Rivo, SAI Global, SAP, thinkstep and VelocityEHS (see Figure 10). All software suppliers

included in this study actively participated through interviews, product demonstrations and responses to a 185-

point questionnaire. Verdantix invited Dakota Software to participate in the study, but they declined.

Evaluation Criteria For EH&S Software

Verdantix defined the evaluation criteria using a combination of interviews with practice leaders, desk research,

discussions with 15 customers and existing expertise. This report is informed by the previous Verdantix

benchmark of EH&S software suppliers and the Verdantix Global EH&S Leaders Survey 2015 Budgets And

Priorities. The Green Quadrant analysis compares offerings from 22 software suppliers on 149 functionality/

feature metrics and 36 supplier criteria grouped as follows:

Capabilities.

This dimension, captured in the vertical axis of the Green Quadrant graphic, measures each software

supplier on the breadth and depth of its software functionality. To assess performance in this dimension,

Verdantix collected data on 149 criteria grouped into 26 high-level categories: data capture, master data

management, operational data management, data security, implementation options, integration,

business intelligence, user interface, native mobile apps, web mobile interface, configurability, air

emissions, audit management, chemicals management, ergonomics, GHG emissions, hazardous waste,

industrial hygiene, incident management, management of change, occupational health, risk

management, permit management, safety management, sustainability management, and water and

wastewater.

Momentum.

This dimension, captured in the horizontal axis of the Green Quadrant graphic, measures each software

supplier on a range of strategic success factors. The 36 criteria included in this axis are grouped into 12

areas: new customers, customer base, version adoption, deal size, deal structure, deployment mix,

contracting mix, brand preference, vision and strategy, market focus, organizational resources, and

financial resources.

The evidence provided by each supplier is captured in a quantitative model. Each top-level criterion is broken

down into sub-criteria. Direct audit management, for example, has sub-criteria such as scheduling,

implementation support, documentation and reporting. Each sub-criterion is awarded a score based on a scale

of zero to three. Each top-level criterion is allocated a weighting that is used to calculate the overall score.

These generate the Green Quadrant graphic. Details on the criteria are provided in Figure 11-1, Figure 11-2,

Figure 11-3 and Figure 12. These figures also provide (in parentheses) the weighting attributed to each top-level

criterion in the model. Weightings are based on customer survey data regarding required functionality and

analyst views on future functionality requirements.

Green Quadrant EH&S Software Enhancements From The 2014 Product

Benchmark

Verdantix studies reflect the current state of customer requirements and product capabilities. To update the

Green Quadrant assessment criteria in line with the current state of the market we:

Expanded the EH&S impacts areas from 17 to 26.

Consistent with a growing customer focus on integrated EH&S platforms we incorporated additional

workflows. The major additions relate to ergonomics, industrial hygiene, incident management,

occupational health, safety management and sustainability management. The expanded purview of the

analysis will inevitably change the capability scores of vendors relative to prior studies. The 2016 study

has 26 capability assessment criteria versus 17 in the 2014 study.

Added nine new vendors into the analysis reflecting the broader assessment.

The 2014 study covered 13 vendors and this benchmark assesses 22 vendors. This reflects the arrival of

new suppliers in the sector such as EtQ and thinkstep, the inclusion of more occupational health criteria

of relevance to firms such as Medgate, and the increased focus on risk management capabilities which

makes the analysis relevant to vendors such as Rivo Software.

Included analysis of native mobile apps and mobile device browser access.

Considering the heightened level of customer focus on mobile apps, this benchmark includes

comprehensive data on mobile app availability, mobile app design, mobile app interfaces, mobile app

offline capability and the synchronization of mobile apps with the server-side software. In 2016, we

forecast many RFPs will explicitly request disclosures on mobile apps. We also assessed the ability of

EH&S software to render in the small screen format of mobile device browsers as distinct from native

mobile apps.

Reweighted assessment criteria to reflect current customer priorities.

Fifteen years ago, compliance with new environmental regulations may have topped the list of customer

priorities and in 2007 GHG emissions was high up the list. Not any more. Our survey data indicate that

the bulk of customers want software to help with incident management and risk management. The

customer panel also listed ‘user interface’ and ‘mobile apps’ as key drivers of purchase preferences. The

quantitative model behind the Green Quadrant contains weightings for each criterion and all sub-criteria

which reflect the most recent customer preferences.

Aligned momentum weightings with proven drivers of success.

Our updates to the momentum criteria in the model are limited and are mostly tied to weightings. We

gave equal weighting to customer base (15%) and new customer wins (15%) reflecting two of the biggest

drivers of momentum. We also weighted ‘brand preference’ at 15% given the critical importance

observed between this metric and inclusion on customer shortlists. Reflecting the increasing role of

financial investors we weighted financial resources at 12% and organizational resources at 10%.

Collectively, these factors account for two-thirds of the weighted momentum scores.

Enablon Offers A True Enterprise-Class EH&S Application And Has

Built Powerful Momentum

Founded in France in 2000 and headquartered in Paris and Chicago, Enablon has grown rapidly in the last five

years. Now with over 340 employees, offices in North America, Europe and Australia, and the most extensive

partner network in the industry, Enablon has the resources to set the pace in the global market for EH&S

software. With a vision to “enable the sustainable company”, Enablon has aligned its business and product

strategies with macro trends such as external stakeholder pressure for global reporting, increasingly complex

data sets and industry-specific performance benchmarks.

Strengths & Differentiators

Based on the Green Quadrant analysis, Verdantix finds that Enablon has strengths in:

Providing a comprehensive, integrated software platform across all EH&S workflows.

The Verdantix Green Quadrant throws down the gauntlet to vendors to demonstrate their functionality

across the breadth of EH&S processes. Enablon offers compelling product breadth to help customers

fulfill their vision of implementing a single platform for managing EH&S. Enablon scores strongly in many

EH&S impact areas including air emissions (2.4/3.0), audit management (2.2/3.0), GHG emissions

(2.5/3.0), permit management (2.2/3.0) and sustainability management (2.7/3.0). This vendor also has a

solid solution for areas including hazardous waste (1.7/3.0), occupational health (1.6/3.0) and industrial

hygiene (1.4/3.0).

Application architecture which meets the needs of complex, global organizations.

Fortune 500 firms looking to roll out a new EH&S software application cast an eagle eye over the

underlying application architecture of prospective vendors, which is just as important as functionality

across EH&S impact areas to achieving a successful implementation. Scores of 2.7 out of 3.0 for master

data management, 2.4 out of 3.0 for operational data management, 2.5 out of 3.0 for data security and

2.0 out of 3.0 for data capture, are testament to Enablon relentlessly updating the design of the

application to meet increasingly demanding customer requirements. Enablon offers a genuine enterprise-

class application, meaning it can scale to serve the needs of the largest, most complex organizations.

Incident, risk and safety management for which it achieves the highest scores.

In the Verdantix global survey of 312 EH&S executives, improving performance on safety, incident

management and risk analysis was ranked as a high priority by 76%, 60% and 59% of respondents – three

of the top four responses across all EH&S areas. Enablon is the benchmark against which other

applications should be measured for these mission critical EH&S areas, with scores of 2.6 out of 3.0 for

incident management, 2.5 out of 3.0 for safety management and 2.5 out of 3.0 for risk management. By

delivering market-leading functionality for these workflows, Enablon is positioned to win many new

contracts as the bulk of deals in 2016 will put risk, incidents and safety as priority drivers for investment.

Improvement Opportunities

Based on the Green Quadrant analysis, Verdantix finds that Enablon could improve on:

Occupational health, industrial hygiene and ergonomics.

In as broad a sphere as EH&S, there are always areas of functionality where competitors have the edge.

Enablon needs to focus on adding depth to its solutions for occupational health, industrial hygiene and

ergonomics, if it is to displace custom-built systems and best-of-breed applications offered by

vendors that have had a long-term focus on these business issues.

Compliance management for water and wastewater.

Complying with the complex web of global environmental regulations is one of the fundamental reasons

firms invest in EH&S software. With a score of 1.0 out of 3.0 for water and wastewater management,

Enablon should prioritize its water module for product development in 2016.

Selection Advice For Buyers

Considering all supplier offerings assessed in the Green Quadrant analysis, we believe that Enablon should be

included on shortlists by:

CIOs and EH&S leaders looking for a new global platform for EH&S and risk management.

Given the breadth and quality of the Enablon application, all EH&S budget holders seeking an enterprise-

scale solution for the long term should include Enablon on their shortlist. The application design is one of

the few in the market which is designed to meet the expectations of a CIO just as much as a VP of EH&S.

As deployments expand across workflows, data sets and geographies, the superior technical design of

Enablon’s software will drive increased momentum. This is already reflected in the most extensive list of

services firm partners in the industry including AECOM, CH2M, ERM and Wipro.

EH&S software buyers seeking an enterprise-class application with customer references from all

industries.

As the top scoring vendor for both user interface design (2.9/3.0) and business intelligence (2.4/3.0),

EH&S executives and end users in all industries can take advantage of Enablon’s intuitive interface and

best-in-class reporting, charting and benchmarking tools. Given that buyers prioritize UI design as a key

buying criterion, Enablon’s constant investment in UI enhancement is a significant competitive

advantage. Such success is reflected in the breadth of Enablon’s client base which is the envy of the

industry, ranging from the likes of ExxonMobil and Shell in oil and gas, Bristol Myers Squibb and Amgen

in pharmaceuticals, and Anglo-American and Glencore in mining and metal.
