OFFICE OF THE ARCHBISHOP

Beloved Presvyteres of our Greek Orthodox Archdiocese,

I greet you in the grace and peace of our Lord and

wish upon you bountiful blessings.

In my pastoral visits to the parishes and diverse

Presvyteres that make up our

D.A.D. Sisterhood.

Letters have been sent to our

Sisters encouraging them to

become active stewards of our

Sisterhood for 2014.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We will be having our annual

Clergy Family Christmas Dinner

in early January with His

Atlanta gathered at the biennial

ATLANTA by Emily Young Carter

Greetings and Well Wishes to everyone.

Since our last update, our plans for our fall get-together and Seminiarian

welcome breakfast have found dates, with some changes.

Our fall get-together is upcoming, an overnight was unable to be

scheduled and so we decided a fall river cruise and lunch. We are looking

forward to welcoming the Seminarian Wives group, we were saddened

that we are unable to participate in the Seminarian Family Retreat this

year. Instead we have a welcome breakfast date for the wives, scheduled

for November 8th at the Metropolis Center.

BOSTON by Eleni Klostri

Clergy-Laity congress held in July 2014

in Philadelphia. Eleven sisters were able

to me e t dur in g ou r des i gn a t edmetropolis meeting time and three more

were able to join us for lunch to continue our meeting.

We discussed the metropolis representative position. I have served as the

rep since March 2014 (when Connie Powell could no longer serve) and I

will continue to serve. Kathy Guerry (Ft. Walton Beach, FL) will be the

alternate rep.

Vassi Haros (Florence, SC) will continue to serve as the president.

Christine Salzman (Athens, GA) will serve as the treasurer.

The ladies expressed that they

would like to receive news and

updates. Jenny Newlin and I will

work on a quarterly newsletter

with updates (births, deaths,

ordinations, baptisms, transfers,etc.). The newsletter will be

emailed except to those who do not have email.

An email was sent to the Atlanta presvyteres in August asking them to

update their contact information. We received a pretty good response

(and are continuing to receive responses) and I will update Nicole Keares

so that changes can be made to the NSP master list.

Unfortunately the retreat that was being planned for October 3 – 5 at our

Diakonia Center was cancelled by His Eminence Metropolitan ALEXIOS

due to lack of participation. About fifteen presvyteres had registered to

attend.

Six presvyteres were able to gather for the consecration of St. George

Cathedral in Greenville, SC held the weekend of September 26-27. We

will meet at our metropolis clergy-laity in Columbia, SC in the summerof 2015.

“How many believers do you have at

your church, Prifteresha Stephanie?”

This question was asked of me on the

first day of my OCMC Mission Trip to

Albania last month. “Excuse me,” I

replied. “What exactly do you mean?”

“I’m asking,” she said softly “How

many people do you have at your

church?”

And then it hit me. These next 10 days

were going to be a real eye opener.

The Priftes (Priests) and Priftereshas

(Presvyteres) in Albania refer to their

parishioners/members/pledges here as:

BELIEVERS. Wow, that’s powerful!

As you may know, in the 20th century,

Albania fell under a communist

regime and suffered the most severe

religious persecution in the world; all

forms of religion were constitutionally

prohibited and by 1991, no Church

infrastructure existed. From our

Albanian sisters, we heard compelling

stories of Orthodoxy being

“underground” during the long dark

era of communism, with churches

having been destroyed. Under the

guidance of His Beatitude Anastasios,

Archbishop of Tirana, Durres and All

Albania and along with the help of

Orthodox missionaries, this Church of

believers is being resurrected and

continues to flourish.

I was invited to join the OCMC 2014

Albania Women Orthodox Mission

Team* in early August and was

excited, yet nervous, about this

amazing opportunity. We eight women

had never met each other, did not

speak Albanian, and had no

expectations other than a desire to

serve God and answer a silent calling

to Albania.

Why was it important to send this

team to Albania? Simply put, we were

sent to share the Orthodox faith and

nourish women – our sister clergy

wives – to grow in Christ.

The theme was “Mary and Martha,

Servant and Student.” Our team led

two, three day programs for some 80

Priftereshas, covering the roles and

challenges of serving as Priftereshas,

raising an Orthodox family, and

Christian dispute resolution. Our

retreats were held at the Resurrection

Orthodox Theological Academy in

Shen Vlash and we were housed at the

Myrrh Bearing Women Monastery

adjacent to the seminary.

God taught me so much through this

mission journey, my team and the

people we ministered to in Albania.

Our Albanian sisters are beautiful,

strong, faithful women of God. They

are, without a doubt, believers! I will

forever cherish the fellowship we

shared. One of the highlights of the

experience was the opportunity to

meet and visit with His Beatitude

Archbishop Anastasios. Being in his

presence was something I cannot even

begin to describe as it was so special.

We also visited several of the

cathedrals and churches that have been

built since 1992 and they are

absolutely breathtaking, holy places.

This trip provided two distinct cultures

a taste of the harmony that exits

between members of the Body of

Christ. We are one Orthodox family!

A family of believers! And, I say,

Glory to God, for allowing me to be

His witness!

*Under the spiritual guidance of His Beatitude

Archbishop Anastasios, the OCMC 2014 Albania

Women Orthodox Mission Team included: Pres Renee

Ritsi, Team Leader; Pres. Joy Corona; Khr. Maggie

Hock; Pres. Anna Lillios; Pres. Stephanie Panagos;

Dcns. Alexandria Ritsi; and lay leaders Stella Wacker

and Judge Marina Corodemus.

DENVER by Rachel Sinos

I hope this finds you well as we enjoy the delights of the fall season.

This August, eleven sisters from the Denver area were together, not necessarily by design, to celebrate the

thirtieth anniversary of St. Catherine parish in Greenwood Village, Colorado. It was an extraordinary evening

that began with Great Vespers celebrated by His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah and was followed by a lively

night of dinner and dancing.

In September, we held a long-distance Presvytera Book Club discussion. The title was a secular classic, The

Scarlet Pimpernel. It was decided that the next book will be a spiritual title, Presbytera: The Life, Mission,

and Service of the Priest’s Wife by Presvytera Athanasia Papademetriou, as it is quite pertinent to each of us.

The date is set for later this fall and we hope that more of our Metropolis sisters will be able to participate in

the discussion.

DETROIT by Ginny Emroll

Our Metropolis has experienced many

changes and transitions since

Clergy‐‐‐‐Laity in Philadelphia.

First, I would like to thank Jenny

Legakis for serving as our past

Representative. Jenny, along with

alternate rep. Harriet Wilson, worked

many hours serving the Metropolis of

Detroit Presvyteres. We thank them

both for their hard work and dedication

to the sisterhood. Second, I would like

to recognize Anastasia Cassis for doing

an outstanding job as the NSP

Treasurer. We congratulate her on her

new position as Vice President of our

NSP!

Upcoming events: During the fall, we

encourage each district of our

Metropolis to hold an informal get

together. In January, we all look

forward to our annual clergy family

vasilopita. In addition, I hope to have

our Metropolis of Detroit Presvytera

Directory updated with all the changes,

additions, and new contact

information.

I am honored to have been selected as

the Representative for our Detroit

Metropolis. Along with Emily Bartz,

our alternate Representative, I look

forward to meeting and serving the

presvyteres of our Metropolis. We

encourage all the presvyteres to

participate in the love, joy, and

fellowship of our NSP!

RETIRED REP REPORT by Evelyn Adams

I greet you from sunny California and pray that you

and your families are all well and had a pleasant

summer.

These past few months have been slow, but have

continued to communicate with our sisters on

various occasions through cards and email.

If there is anything I am able to do, or if someone

knows of a presvytera of a retired priest who we

may not know about, please call on me at anytime.

This year the Sister to Sister Committee has been in contact with the

Archdiocese periodically. From May 1, 2014 to July 10, 2014, Jeanne MonosSISTER TO SISTER

REPORTby Vicki Toppses has sent out 9 Sister to Sister care packages! In this latest round, 1 Presvytera and 8

Diakonisses have received the wonderful gifts from the NSP welcoming them into

the Sisterhood. That is a total of 11 Presvyteres and 18 Diakonisses who have

received the package this year so far! Thank you Jeanne for all of your hard work in

sending those off!

We will be contacting the Archdiocese towards the end of the year and God willing receive the the list of the

new sisters from the ordinations of the Summer and Fall months.

May God continue to bless each and every one of your families with fruitful ministries! page 5

(President’s letter continued from page 1) We are always trying to find out what works and what needs

improvement. Thank you to those of you who submitted our Presvyteres’ Clergy Laity survey. The results were

distributed and discussed at our fall board meeting. Overall, people were content. We will attempt to address

the concerns noted when preparing for the 2016 Clergy Laity.

We have an enthusiastic board with many new members. New people bring new perspectives and “old” people

bring wisdom and experience. Together, we will use our different gifts and accomplish great things.

The Metropolis Representatives are excited! Please help them by attending events, offering suggestions and

assistance, and sending them news. Two positions on the board need to be filled—Widowed Presvyteres

Representative and Historian. If you are interested in, or have suggestions for, either of these positions, please

contact me as soon as possible.

Thank you to our new newsletter editor, Goldie Doukas. She has some new and exciting ideas for our

newsletter. We are very happy to have her back on the board. (A bit of trivia--Goldie was president of the NSP

from 1992-1996.)

I am very honored to have been elected as President of the NSP and humbly accept this position. I follow an

impressive group of women who served as NSP presidents over the years. As your president, I will strive to be

a friend and ally to every Presvytera and Diakonissa. Please feel free to contact me any time about anything.

I would like to thank Alice Noplos for being such a great president over the past four years. I am very fortunate

to have her and the other past presidents to turn to as I serve my term as president.

A Program of the Archdiocese Benefits Committee

ComPsych® The Guidance Resource Company®

866-641-079124 hours a day

The single source for confidential support, expert information,

and valuable resources, when you need it the most.

The Archdiocese Benefits Committee (ABC)

provides this special benefit because it recognizes

that personal concerns can create levels of stress and

health issues that can seriously interfere with one's

ability to fulfill his responsibilities to his family and

calling.

The ABC chose ComPsych because it is a leading

independent provider of assistance programs and

services in the country.

We want to provide a full-service benefit that you and
