Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America8-10 East 79th Street, New York, New York

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On this day of Thanksgiving we are blessed as Orthodox Christians to offer gratitude to God, our Creator, who gives us life and has revealed His amazing and transforming love for us. He is the source and foundation of our thanksgiving, as we respond to His love and presence offering our praise and adoration. Our worship affirms the words of the Psalmist as we come into His presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise! (Psalm 95:2)

We offer to the world a witness of the true nature of thanksgiving. In the Holy Eucharist, identified by name as an act of thanksgiving, we show our gratitude through our faith in His grace and our obedience to His will. We approach and receive the most holy and sacred Body and Blood of Christ with contrite and gracious hearts, and we are filled with joy, hope, and assurance. The celebration of the Holy Eucharist in our communal worship reveals the transformative power of gratitude.

When we express our gratitude to God, when we offer Him thanksgiving and call upon His name, we show humanity the power of grace to turn despair into hope, to change fear into courage, to calm animosity with compassion, and heal what is broken. As we experience in the Holy Eucharist, our communion with God leads us to an awareness of the needs of others and how we might serve them as an expression of our gratitude to Him.

The Thanksgiving Day holiday is a unique time in this country for us to reflect on the role of thanksgiving in our faith and in our lives. It is a time to be thankful for the many blessings we have received as we are mindful of the One who blesses us with life and grace. It is a day to call all people to affirm the power of gratitude, a call we make consistently through our worship and service. It is a day to extend grace to more and more people so that thanksgiving may increase to the glory of God. (II Corinthians 4:15)

May the blessings of God’s grace be with you and your families as you gather on this day of Thanksgiving. May your hearts be filled with joy, and may this be a time of sharing and giving in gratitude so that lives will be transformed and many more will join us in proclaiming blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might to our God for ever and ever! (Revelation 7:12)

Have a blessed Thanksgiving Day.

“It is God, Who is merciful and grants everyone what they need, Who is building them up when He gives them more than they need; in doing so He shows the abundance of His love for humanity and teaches them to give thanks. When He does not grant them what they need, He makes them compensate for the thing they need through the working of the mind and teaches them patience.”

St. Dorotheos of Gaza, Discourses and Sayings

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

The change of season from Summer to Fall in New England brings with it a wonderful occasion to focus on the daily transformation that needs to take place within us as we move forward on our path towards Salvation. With every breath, we are provided with the opportunity to grow in grace and reestablish ourselves on the journey that we began at Baptism. Each moment of time, we experience on Earth, is an opportunity to prepare us for the infinite life we have been invited to share with our Lord in Heaven through His Love and Resurrection.

This metamorphosis comes about through much prayer, fasting and preparation. It begins with a renewal of spirit and with an honest and humbling look within our soul; pleading with God for the ability to recognize our missteps - beseeching His forgiveness - and then altering the manner in which we proceed. Saint Maximos the Confessor writes that “every genuine confession humbles the soul. When it takes the form of thanksgiving, it teaches the soul that it has been delivered by the grace of God.” Saint John Chrysostom also instructs that “happiness can only be achieved by looking inward and learning to enjoy whatever life has.” He goes further by explaining that this process “requires transforming greed into gratitude.”

Just as the leaves of green are miraculously, through God’s design, transformed into vivid and vibrant shades of red, yellow and orange, we too, as His children, are called to transform our hearts and free ourselves from the restraints brought about by our own selfishness to reveal the brightness of the Light of Christ that shines within us in our actions and interactions in this world.

May our loving God, continue to nourish our souls as we seek His Righteousness.

Faithfully,

Rev. Peter J. OrfanakosFather Peter

Dear fellow parishioners,

Welcome to our Annual St. Barbara Dinner Dance! Thank you for being a part of this very special and vibrant community.

As I reflect during this season of Thanksgiving, I give thanks for the safe haven we have found in our parish in these troubled times of divisiveness, intolerance and senseless violence. We share a common bond here and a commitment to the glory of God. As an extension of our family and homes, we find in the Church a sense of community and belonging to something greater than ourselves.

Under the unparalleled guidance and spiritual leadership of our clergy, Fathers Peter and Steve, and their helpmates in the Lord’s work, Presbyteres Vangie and Electra, the St. Barbara parish continues to grow and flourish. May God grant them many years so that they may continue their life’s labor of love. May they continue to inspire us to live and show our faith as a shining light.

As we look ahead to the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, I pray that God continues to bless us and our families. Give thanks for all that God has seen fit to grant us. Please show gratitude by continuing your commitment to our beloved St. Barbara family through your time, talents and treasure and caring for your fellow man by sharing your bounty with those less fortunate.

I thank you for the honor and privilege of serving as your Parish Council president these past two years. You have all enriched my life.

In Christ,

Happy HolidaysFrom the Participants of

The Golden Years Ministry

“The state of spiritual watchfulness is not simply the opposite of physiological sleep. The watchfulness which Jesus expects of us is like the watchfulness of a sentinel, alert to the slightest sign of the presence of the enemy. It is a state of constant spiritual struggle, the opposite of spiritual sleep in which man allows himself to be controlled by events,

like an automaton in a life which passes like a dream. If we are in such a state of withdrawn somnabulance, the Kingdom cannot grow within us. Thus, addressing the Ephesians, St. Paul says, “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light” (Ephesians 5:14).” The Living God - Volume, p. 341.

Singing and Dancing With Our Lord Jesus

We watched you suffer death upon the Cross.without us feeling any of Your pain or suffering,

You took away our sins.

“Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” (Luke 23:34)

He wept for us . . . though He was being killed. Now, His people are redeemed and will live with Him forever.

Do we want Our Lord Jesus to cry for us again?Certainly not!

Let us behave as He taught us.Let us invite Him into the joy of our church.

He and His mother celebrated the wedding at Cana, With joy . . . and with grace.

His mother directed the stewards to her SonAnd He miraculously turned the water to wine.

What joy to taste that vintage!

King David wrote psalms with joy.He played his harp and sang.

He danced in thanksgiving to glorify God.

Let us fill the house for the great wedding feast. The bridegroom is coming soon.

Let us choose to attend!Let us sing and dance with Our Lord Jesus!Let us receive Him in our hearts and souls!

May our faith never falter or fail.May we be illuminated by His Light.

May we sing and dance with Our Lord JesusAnd glorify Him as David glorified His Father!
