With exceptional architecture from the 13th to 21st centuries and some of the UK’s best shopping and dining out, it’s easy to see why this cosmopolitan city is such a popular choice.

One of the earliest cities to be named European Capital of Culture in 1990, Glasgow today remains a major centre for the arts. Discover a wealth of free museums and galleries, including the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery, the Burrell Collection, St Mungo Museum, People’s Palace and the vast Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum – not to mention the legacy left by Art Nouveau pioneer and father of the ‘Glasgow Style’, the artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The contemporary arts scene has flourished in Glasgow in recent years, covering everything from major exhibitions and galleries to thriving independent studios and acclaimed events and festivals. As part of the Year of Creative Scotland 2012, the biennial Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art returns to the city in April.

Glasgow is also a UNESCO City of Music, where you can choose from around 130 live music events a week. The city is home to Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, one of Europe’s leading symphony orchestras. You can find entertainment long into the night at live music sessions, clubs and gigs – ranging from traditional to the more offbeat. Many of Glasgow’s venues are stars in their own right, among them the neon-fronted Barrowland, The Arches and the legendary King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut, credited with launching the careers of some of today’s biggest talent, including Oasis.

Glasgow is famous for the warmth of its welcome. Glaswegians love meeting people and showing off their city, and you shouldn’t be surprised to find yourself being given some insider tips.

Glasgow has some of the best shopping in the UK outside London, and has everything you need for unforgettable retail therapy. The pedestrianised Sauchiehall Street, Buchanan Street and Argyle Street is dubbed the ‘Style Mile’ and packs in just about everything you could want from high street and exclusive shopping. From the spacious Buchanan Galleries and the recently expanded St Enoch Centre to the elegant Princes Square, which offers five floors of upmarket shopping, there’s a fashion fix to suit all tastes and budgets.

Don’t miss the Merchant City area for its unique combination of designer stores – Emporio Armani, Pretty Green, Ralph Lauren, Mulberry, Cruise and Agent Provocateur to name a few – mixed with

breathtaking Victorian architecture, independent art galleries and a wealth of stylish cafes, bars and bistros for a break between shops.

In the bohemian West End you’ll find a treasure trove of unique, one-off stores, from the design genius of Timorous Beasties to the vintage clothing and gift boutiques huddled in the lanes off Byres Road.

Heading out of town? There’s a world of shopping at Silverburn, Braehead, Glasgow Fort Shopping Park and East Kilbride Shopping Centre, where you can find high street names, independent retailers and a good range of eateries.

The city is gearing up to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014, a decision testament to Glasgow’s ability to host world-class events.

You can see wonderful examples of Victorian architecture across the city, a legacy of Glasgow’s days as ‘second city of the Empire’ and the industrial building boom of the 18th and 19th centuries. Remember to look up when you’re in one of the broad city centre streets to admire the extraordinary detail on the buildings.

Fancy a new way to explore Glasgow? The city’s 50 greatest buildings of the last 800 years have recently been distinguished with Glasgow Landmarks plaques. Check out the list at www.glasgowlandmarks.org.uk

Discover beauty spots less than an hour from Glasgow, with the lush Clyde Valley, magnificent estates on the Firth of Clyde, historical attractions and country parks just waiting to be discovered. Excellent walking opportunities present themselves in every region but the most notable is perhaps Milngavie, just north of Glasgow, where a distinctive obelisk marks the starting point of the West Highland Way, the 95-mile path through the west Highlands to Fort William.

Prefer something less ambitious? Milngavie’s Mugdock Country Park has some great short walks, and a host of activities, from horse riding and orienteering to archery and golf.

South east of the city, near New Lanark World Heritage Site, is the excellent Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve. Take a riverside walk to see the magnificent waterfalls and look out for more than 100 species of bird and resident otters. This beautiful area is part of the Clyde Valley Tourist Route, a 42-mile scenic route taking in historical attractions and stunning vantage points. See the magnificently restored former hunting lodge of Chatelherault, near Hamilton, and the David Livingstone Centre at Blantyre, as well as fascinating reminders of Lanarkshire’s industrial heritage along the way.

In the same area, Strathclyde Country Park, which offers 400 acres of open parkland, woodland and varied wildlife habitats around Strathclyde Loch, is a centre of excellence for outdoor activities.

You can take part in anything from cycling to water skiing and there are events held in the park throughout the year. This is also home to M&D’s theme park, which boasts five white-knuckle rollercoaster rides, as well as a host of attractions for younger visitors.

Whisky lovers can experience tastings at Glengoyne Distillery, which can be found in a beautiful wooded valley north of Glasgow and near Loch Lomond. Visitors are always amazed by the breathtaking scenery, and the award-winning distillery offers a variety of tempting tours and tastings.

2. The other World Heritage Site is the Antonine Wall, parts of which can be seen north of the city at Bearsden and Kirkintilloch. The turf wall marks the northernmost point of Roman conquest in Britain.

The Glasgow School of Art is a leading force in contemporary art – around 30 percent of all Turner Prize winners are alumni of the school – and offers a year-round programme of events, talks and exhibitions. Its programme is complemented by the independent studios at Trongate 103, a dedicated centre for the arts and creativity in the heart of the Merchant City.

Glasgow is the perfect place to celebrate the Year of Creative Scotland in 2012. In Glasgow, there’s a tradition that art is for the people, and you’ll find art galleries free to visit off the main shopping streets, including the Gallery of Modern Art, Centre for Contemporary Arts and The Lighthouse. Beautiful city centre architecture combines medieval, Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco and 21st century styles – and, of course, designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

Mackintosh had a huge influence on the city and there are dedicated tours and trails to make exploring his works easy. See breathtaking interiors and architectural masterpieces, including The Glasgow School of Art building (Mackintosh designed every inch of it, inside and out), the Willow Tea Rooms, the reconstruction of his own home at the Hunterian Art Gallery and his sumptuous House for an Art Lover set in Bellahouston Park. Take a train to Helensburgh and you can visit the Hill House, a baronial style house designed by Mackintosh. One of Scotland’s architectural treasures, this attraction is perched high above the town with panoramic views over the Clyde Estuary.

Victorian gems to seek out include the Kibble Palace, a magnificent glasshouse in the Botanic Gardens, the Tenement House in Garnethill, which offers a snapshot into life in Victorian Glasgow, the splendid City Chambers dominating George Square, and a number of Greek and Egyptian-inspired buildings created by Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson.

Five tips for free museums

and galleries

1. Housed in Zaha Hadid’s

remarkable building, the

Riverside Museum of Transport and Travel opened

in 2011 and has 3,000 objects on display, including

the recently acquired South

African locomotive and the

recreation of three streets

from different decades, real

shops and a subway station !

2. The Burrell Collection in Pollok

Country Park is the private

collection amassed by shipping

magnate Sir William Burrell,

who gifted more than 8,000

objects to the city, including

Islamic art and works by

Cézanne.

3. The vast Kelvingrove Art

Gallery and Museum is Scotland’s most visited attraction. It is housed in

a magnificent 1901 red sandstone building, a defining

feature of the cityscape. See

displays covering art, culture

and history as well as arms,

armoury and a famous WWII

Spitfire.

4. The Hunterian Museum is

Scotland’s oldest, with exhibits covering Romans in

Scotland, Egyptian mummies

and an ancient shark fossil

One of Glasgow’s best-loved parks, Kelvingrove enjoys a fine setting on the banks of the River Kelvin and defines the centre of the city’s bohemian West End. Bordered on three sides by grand vistas - the curved residential terraces high on Woodlands Hill, the gothic spire of Glasgow University and the red sandstone Kelvingrove Art Gallery - it offers one of Glasgow’s most pleasant and most photographed city walks.

Follow the Kelvingrove Park Heritage Trail, which picks out 35 different points of interest, and consider the urban myth that the Kelvingrove Art Gallery was built accidentally back-to-front! In fact, the front of the building is intentionally the one facing into the park, as it was purpose-built as the Palace of Fine Arts for the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1901, held in the park. Today, Kelvingrove is the most visited museum in the UK outside London.

Nearby are Glasgow’s beautiful Botanic Gardens. Built in 1873, the ornate A-listed Kibble Palace is the main feature of the gardens, a striking Victorian glasshouse with collections of tropical plants from around the world and a fine collection

of marble statues. The Kibble and the surrounding gardens can perhaps be seen at their best during the summer when the West End Festival and Bard in the Botanics Festival bring art, music and Shakespeare to this magnificent setting.

Another beautiful Victorian glasshouse can be found at the People’s Palace in Glasgow Green, the city’s oldest park. The People’s Palace is another of the city’s free museums, and is dedicated to telling the social history of the city itself. In the park, you’ll also see the superb Doulton Fountain and the dazzling western façade of the former Templeton’s Carpet Factory, inspired by the Doge’s Palace in Venice.

The highlight of Bellahouston Park is unquestionably Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s House for an Art Lover. The attraction was designed by Mackintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald for a competition in 1901, only to be disqualified for late entry. It took almost a century for his 14 lithographs to be finally realised in Bellahouston Park. Among the highlights are the white music room, washed in light from the giant windows, and the excellent Art Lovers Café.

Garden lovers meanwhile should spend a little time exploring Greenbank Garden just south of the city in Clarkston. A feast for the senses during any season, you can see more than 3,700 different plants, a wide collection of narcissus, and explore the magnificent walled garden, which is divided into smaller themed gardens. Head to the sprawling Pollok Country Park, just three miles southwest of the city centre, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re deep in the country. Extensive woodlands, activities, and its own russet herd of Highland cattle have helped it scoop awards as both Britain’s and Europe’s best park. Don’t miss the two main attractions: the exquisite 1750 ancestral home of the Maxwell family, Pollok House, with its outstanding collection of Spanish art, and the world-famous Burrell Collection.

Translating from Gaelic as the ‘dear green place’, Glasgow has an extraordinary variety of parks and gardens, built into the expanding city in the 19th century as the lungs for this industrial powerhouse. Now the heavy industry is gone, but the expansive green spaces remain as inviting urban retreats, and several contain some of the city’s top attractions.

Did you know? The Doulton Fountain was gifted

to the city by Sir Henry Doulton. The fountain was designed to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee of 1887, and is the largest terracotta fountain in the world.

Kelvingrove Park was designed by renowned garden designer Sir Joseph Paxton, whose other works included Crystal Palace in London.

Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone were both installed as rectors of the University of Glasgow in Kibble Palace.

Bellahouston Park was home to The Empire Exhibition in 1938. The eating facilities at the exhibition included one of the first Indian restaurants in Scotland.

Those looking for a first-class dining experience will find a broad choice of excellent restaurants. In the city centre, for example, you might treat yourself to dinner at Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery, or enjoy seafood in the Art Deco splendour of Rogano, which has an interior modelled on the Queen Mary. Both are among Glasgow’s finest and longest-established restaurants.

For informal city centre dining, Red Onion is a lively venue serving good food until late, the Grill Room at the Square offers a great location next to the Gallery of Modern Art and you can find a choice of stylish eateries in the courtyard of Princes Square, including the excellent Darcys.

Within the cultural epicentre of the Merchant City there are plenty of great dining establishments, not to mention a range of stylish bars where you can enjoy an aperitif before your meal. Guy’s Restaurant on Candleriggs has a menu to cater for even the most eclectic of diners; the menu emphasises quality produce, often sourced from independent suppliers, and you can enjoy live jazz on the weekend. For seafood lovers, nearby City Merchant is a quality choice, serving up fresh Loch Etive mussels, oysters and scallops. Keep a keen eye on the specials blackboard for advice on what has been caught that day.

Café Gandolfi is a Merchant City institution. A favourite for its chunky wood and stained glass décor, this cosy bohemian restaurant has won countless awards over the years for its quality Scottish cuisine and excellent service. Head to the West End for an eclectic mix of menus displayed in the cobblestone lanes off Byres Road. One of these, Ashton Lane, is a destination in itself, with some of the city’s most atmospheric bistros built into the former stables, including Brel, Ubiquitous Chip and The Loft.

Look out for Number 16 Restaurant on Byres Road, or The Sisters, Kelvingrove, and don’t miss Oran Mor – Gaelic for ‘Big Song’– a converted church combining restaurant, bar and entertainment venues under an astonishing ceiling mural by venerable writer and artist Alasdair Gray.

Those looking for a spot of lunch in-between sightseeing or shopping expeditions will find some wonderful cafés offering first-class produce in beautiful surroundings. Art lovers can celebrate Charles Rennie Mackintosh at the Willow Tea Rooms in the city centre or the Art Lovers Café at the elegant House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston Park.

Discover music, theatre, gala days, dance and comedy at the West End Festival in June with choral music, folk, rock and jazz alongside authors, guided walks and all types of dance, or enjoy an exciting programme of unique and innovative performances, including world premieres, at the Merchant City Festival in July.

Sports fans also have plenty to be excited about, as Glasgow’s Hampden Park hosts eight of the football matches for the London Olympic Games. Hampden, Scotland’s national stadium, will also hold the athletic events and closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Glasgow.

There are a good number of Highland games, festivals, competitive music events, and water-based activities taking place year- round. The year culminates in Glasgow Loves Christmas, a programme of events that make Christmas shopping in Glasgow one of the best experiences in the country.

How to read the listingslùil leughaidh na liosta

Now is the time to choose your holiday accommodationThis guide has been split into five accommodation sections for both Glasgow and beyond the city:

Establishments are listed within these sections in alphabetical order by location and then by business name.

Each entry has a map reference relating to the maps which appears on pages 44 - 47 of this guide. The map is helpful if you don’t know where a particular town is in relation to the area that interests you. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location with the operator before making your journey.

BookingAccepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately. Insurance & cancellationsShould you have to cancel for any reason, it is reassuring to know that you can be insured against any compensation claim. Please ensure you take out cancellation insurance prior to your trip.

PricingThe prices of accommodation, services, and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Please note that the prices are per person per night, include VAT where applicable and are for your guidance only (VAT as at November 2011). Please check prices when you book accommodation and confirm exactly what the quoted price includes.

SmokingThe majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and guest houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so. To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directly when booking. For further information, visit www.clearingtheairscotland.com

Look out for the Short Breaks symbol Greater Glasgow & The Clyde Valley offers a fabulous range of quality assured accommodation as listed on pages 20 - 39. Establishments which display the above symbol offer short breaks. Contact them direct for current special offers or to make a booking.

Further informationTo book your accommodation either visit www.visitscotland.com (a booking fee may apply) or contact the accommodation provider direct.

Location‘By’ designates that a property is within 10 miles of this location.

Quality Award For added assurance of quality and standards, all accommodation establishments display a Quality Assurance Award. The scheme is explained on pages 16 and 17.

Map reference To assist you further in locating each establishment, this grid reference relates to the map on pages 44 - 47.
