Evolving technology and the global demand for innovative health care solutions make Greater Copenhagen the perfect location for two converging industries: life science and tech. Greater Copenhagen is currently shaping the rise of the new HealthTech industry.

The region has an impressive history of life science and technological innovations. From the discovery of insulin to the first mobile phone to Bluetooth technology – all originate from Greater Copenhagen-based science and companies. The region offers a superior combination of the key factors needed for the creation and development of innovative and successful HealthTech companies.

Copenhagen is ranked as one of the five most digital cities in Europe. Greater Copenhagen is at the forefront of imple-menting digital services in both the public and the private sector, so everything from applications and data transfers to licenses runs smoothly and effectively.

Strategy and capacity-building in HealthTech

Digital and health literacy involves a range of knowledge, skills and behaviour patterns that appropriately – and effectively – engage people in activities related to digital information and technologies.

Both Sweden and Denmark have detailed national strategies for HealthTech. These are the foundations for monitoring cur-rent progress as well as for scaling up and adding new servic-es within HealthTech.

HealthTech in Sweden

Since its initial eHealth strategy in 2005, Sweden has revised its national focus to:• Empowering and motivating individuals to co-develop eServices• Increasing national coordination of health and social care• Improving access to information for decision-making in care• Increasing focus on national and international issues related to HealthTech

HealthTech in Denmark

Denmark launched its first HealthTech strategy in 1996 so the use of electronic patient records is well established. GPs and specialists now have access to patient data regardless of where it was created. All GP offices are computerised.

Regional headquarters in Copenhagen means low costs and high quality

Copenhagen is Scandinavia’s most cost-efficient capital, making it an ideal choice for your Nor-dic headquarters and business expansion into Northern Europe. According to the Financial Times 2016 fDi benchmark, Copenhagen is 15-20% chea-per than other northern European metropolises in terms of total costs.

A perfect place for our Nordic headquarters

The global pharmaceutical company Astellas has

located all its corporate support functions for

Nordic and Baltic sales in Copenhagen. Astellas

chose Copenhagen because of its unique ability

to sustain a multicultural corporate environment

together with a strong local understanding of all

markets in the Nordic region.

In Stockholm, 90 percent of our employees would be Swedish, in Oslo they would be Norwegian, and in Finland they would be Finns. But in Copenhagen we have emplo-yees from four Nordic countries, with a ma-

jority of Danes and Swedes.

This makes our work environment multicul-tural, but still with a strong local market understanding of all our markets. This is important, because despite the global per-ception that the Nordic region is one homo-geneous market, there are differences bet-

ween the countries.

- Anders Nordén, General Manager

Nordic & Baltic Operations, Astellas.

Converging industries – a paradigm shift in healthcare

Businesses within the field of healthcare and related indus-tries are currently experiencing a paradigm shift, moving from traditional cure-based to prevention-based healthcare. This transition has been enabled by the rapid evolution of digital technology within some key sectors in the tech indus-try, such as big data, cloud solutions, social media connect-ing patients, IoT (Internet of Things), and sensors providing access to personal biometric data.

The evolution of better services

In Greater Copenhagen, this evolution is already resulting in better services through earlier diagnosis, personalised treat-ments, fewer emergency events and even prevention of dis-ease – all of which substantially lowers the healthcare cost for society. With an aging global population and health care costs going through the roof, the demand is huge for new innovative, differentiated and cost-effective patient services.

Be in the go-to region for tech innovation

HealthTech companies in Greater Copenhagen often have world-class competencies for designing and developing communication-enabled devices. Their unique independent laboratories are comparable to what one would normally ex-pect to find in-house at companies such as mobile phone manufacturers. Thanks to its educational infrastructure and the continued presence of major software and hardware companies such as Ericsson and Sony Mobile, Greater Co-penhagen has long been a hub for a cross-industry techno-logical innovation that incorporates gaming as well as com-panies like Bosch, Volvo and Assa Abloy. Sweden has a long tradition of involvement in the automo-tive industry, covering everything from R&D right through to production and after-sales services. Although these in-dustries are primarily located outside Greater Copenhagen, Bosch, Continental and Volvo Cars all chose to establish software development centres for the digitalisation of cars in the southern Swedish city of Lund in 2016.

The amount of people working in embedded software solutions, connectivity, [and]

software security was a reason for choosing Lund for this location.

Gaming is poised to revolutionise life science

The gaming industry is playing an increasingly im-portant role in life science. Apps that let patients play a game while learning to control their diabetes have long been available but there is much more in the pipeline. Jane McGonigal is a pioneering game designer who created Superbetter (superbetter.com), a game for treating anxiety and depression. Several years ago she was quoted as saying,

If anybody needs to be scared of games, it’s definitely the pharmaceutical industry.

Now, it seems as though her prophesy is coming true. In a recent GeekWire article she explains,

People are working on games that work better than morphine for pain relief,

games that work better than medicine for depression, and games that work better for weight loss than diet pills. Being able

to play a game to improve your health is really big space, absolutely. Who

wouldn’t rather play a game than have side effects from medicine?

Triple strength R&D

The Greater Copenhagen life science cluster Medicon Valley is built on the successes and dynamics of the triple helix ecosystem involving government agencies, research infrastructure and business networks

Greater Copenhagen has a long-standing tradition for ef-ficient public-private partnerships in areas such as devel-opment and testing healthcare and welfare solutions. This applies both to the pharmaceutical industry and to medical technology.

Collaboration - The Nordic recipe for success

A strong tradition for collaboration has always characterised business and biobanks in the Nordics, especially within the medical and pharmaceutical industry where hundreds of companies have shared resources and developed together over the years. In the Greater Copenhagen area, this unique approach has proved that collaboration is still a recipe for success.

In Greater Copenhagen representatives from public and pri-vate healthcare and research organisations openly discuss barriers and opportunities for public-private research collab-oration in personalised medicine. This is an area of research focus in Greater Copenhagen that has promising possibilities within public-private collaboration on better and new treat-ment forms – e.g. medicines or new innovative tech-based solutions - that will benefit patients.

An important prerequisite for realising this potential is a clear and secure framework for collaboration among pub-lic researchers, clinicians, patients and private actors along the entire research value chain. Businesses can find these frameworks in Greater Copenhagen.

It is a national infrastruc-ture hosted by Karolinska Institutet in collaboration with all Swedish medical universities. BBMRI.se is striving to build a national infrastructure of biobank samples from patients and healthy volunteers. This will generate new possibilities of discovering diseases at an early stage and determining the best treatment.

World-class R&D facilities

Copenhagen Science City has one of Europe’s highest concentrations of education and research institutions and organisations in the fields of medicine, health and natural sciences. Copenhagen Science City offers access to invest-ment-intensive facilities, technology and know-how that can be difficult for individual businesses to establish on their own. Copenhagen Science City is an ideal location for start-ups, scale-ups, R&D-divisions and mature companies.

More than 200 innovative companies have already cho-sen to locate within walking distance of University Hospital Rigshospitalet, Metropolitan University College, the Univer-sity of Copenhagen, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, two student innovation hubs and a healthcare innovation centre.

Plant your start-up where it will grow best

With a history of globally successful start-ups like King, Drugstars, Zendesk, Lytics, Podio and The Astonishing Tribe, the Greater Copenhagen area is very active in its political and commercial support for new companies

Greater Copenhagen is a unique location in Europe for con-necting technology with life science, combining ambition with talent and leveraging local knowhow. Here, you can build a product or service that makes all the difference. More and more businesses in Greater Copenhagen are looking to start-ups for partnerships. Entrepreneurship is very high on Greater Copenhagen’s political and business agenda. The region has ensured that it is extremely easy to register a company, and the high degree of digitisation makes pro-cesses very efficient.

R&D – outsourced

The concept of outsourcing R&D to partners acknowledg-es the fact that many established players often struggle to keep up with the most recent technological developments and consumer demands. Outsourcing R&D benefits both parties. The established companies get cutting-edge tech-nical innovation while start-ups get access to capital, knowl-edge and distribution muscle.
