The day the volcano erupted won’t soon be forgotten. The destruction was profound, with hundreds of homes covered in ash and completely ruined. No one expected such an incident to take place here. I suppose we should have known an event like this was coming; we do live on the foothills of an active volcano, after all. But even the stories we’d heard of eruptions didn’t prepare us for how explosive it would be. It wasn’t as though lava quietly dribbled down the mountain. It came shooting out of the top as though a bomb went off in there. But what’s truly amazing is how the entire island banded together to rebuild. That was no easy feat! This achievement would not have been possible had we not all worked together.

One of the most important things to remember when calamity strikes is not to panic. A panicky person cannot think clearly. A person who panics cannot maneuver through the obstacles presented by a disaster, such as a tornado or hurricane. Each kind of disaster requires a different action. For example, a tornado requires people to go to the center of a building (preferably a room with no windows) or a basement and to cover their heads. A hurricane, on the other hand, requires evacuation because the storm surge can flood areas. If the storm surge rises too high, people will be stranded on rooftops and unable to get to safety. In the event of an earthquake, people should get outside or stand in doorways for protection. Seismic activity causes the ground to shake and buildings to come toppling down in some cases. Regardless of the kind of natural disaster, a calm approach will allow you to think things through and act appropriately for the situation.

alphabetical order. Today you will read about two entries you might find in an encyclopedia.. Read both entries and then answer the questions that follow.

TORNADOES: A tornado is a violently rotating column of air extending from a thunderstorm to the ground. Tornadoes come in many sizes but are typically in the form of a visible condensation funnel, whose narrow end touches the earth and is often encircled by a cloud of debris.

Most tornadoes have wind speeds of 130 mph (177 km/hr) or less. They are approximately 250 feet (75 m) wide, and travel a few miles (several kilometers) before dissipating. Some tornadoes can be one mile (1.6 km) wide and stay on the ground over 50 miles (80 km). The average forward speed is 30 (48 km/hr) mph but may vary from nearly stationary tornados to 70 mph (112 km/hr). The strongest tornadoes have rotating winds of more than 250 mph (400 km/hr).

There are four different types of tornados. These are Multiple Vortex, Satellite, Waterspout and Landspout. A multiple vortex tornado is a type of tornado in which two or more columns of spinning air rotate around a common center. A satellite tornado is a term for a weaker tornado, which forms very near a large, strong tornado. A waterspout tornado is simply a tornado over water. Tornadoes that are not associated with any big storms and originate in a fair weather are called Landspout tornadoes.

VOLCANOES : Volcanoes are opening on the Earth's surface where lava (very hot, molten rock), steam, poisonous gaseous, ash and broken rock fragments erupt through the opening. Volcanoes are usually made when two tectonic plates move toward each other. When

12

Page 13: Great Smokey Mountains - Tredyffrin/Easttown School District€¦  · Web viewis a word used in place of a noun. Usually pronouns refer to something that was already mentioned in

these two plates collide, one of them goes under the other one plate. Because of the high energy in the movement of plates, plates melt and form magma. The magma is formed inside the magma chamber. Further heating of the magma chamber builds the pressure up and the magma bursts through the Earth's crust. When magma erupts out of the earth's surface, it is called lava. Lava can be thick and slow moving or thin and fast moving.

Most volcano form a conical mountain structure after eruption. Volcano spews lava, steam, poisonous gases, ash etc from the top of the mountain. This forms a crater at the top of the mountain. Flowing lava cools down and solidifies on all sides of the mountain making the conical mountain structure bigger.

Volcanoes are not unique to the Earth only. They are found on other planets and their moons as well. The word ‘Volcano' is thought to come from Vulcano. Vulcano is a volcanic island in the Aeolian Islands of Italy. The study of volcanoes is called volcanology.

1) What is lava?A. ice sheet B. cold, brittle rock C. hot, molten rockD. high-velocity flow of snow down a mountainside

2) When are volcanoes made?A. when two tectonic plates move away from each otherB. when there is sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust that creates seismic wavesC. when two tectonic plates move toward each otherD. wherever there is snow lying on ground of sufficient angle

3) Where is the magma formed?A. inside the magma chamber B. on the Earth's surfaceC. inside the sea surface D. inside the lava chamber

4) Which fact is NOT correct?A. Volcanoes are found on other planets and their moons as well.B. Most volcanoes form a conical mountain structure after eruption.C. Volcanoes are unique to the Earth only.D. Volcanoes spew lava, steam, poisonous gases and ash from the top of the mountain.

REMEMBER: An encyclopedia is a non fiction book. It does not need to be read by starting at the beginning and reading all the way to the end. Entries cover specific topics in alphabetical order. Today read about two entries you might find in an encyclopedia.. You homework is now to read a biography about Andrew Jackson. Short biographies can be found in an encyclopedia. A biography is simply the story of a life. Biographies can be just a few sentences long, or they can fill an entire book—or two.

Read the entry and then answer the questions that follow.

Andrew Jackson

Andrew Jackson was elected President of the United States of America in 1829. As President, he sought to act as the direct representative of the common person.

Born in a backwoods settlement in the Carolinas in 1767, he received sporadic education. But in his late teens he read law for about two years, and he became an outstanding young lawyer in Tennessee. Fiercely jealous of his honor, he engaged in brawls, and in a duel killed a man who cast an unjustified slur on his wife Rachel.

Jackson prospered sufficiently to buy slaves and to build a mansion, the Hermitage, near Nashville. He was the first man elected from Tennessee to the House of Representatives, and he served briefly in the Senate. A major general in the War of 1812, Jackson became a national hero when he defeated the British at New Orleans.

In 1824, some state political factions rallied around Jackson; by 1828, enough had joined him to win numerous state elections and control of the Federal administration in Washington.

In his first Annual Message to Congress, Jackson recommended eliminating the Electoral College. Jackson believed Government duties could be "so plain and simple" that offices should rotate among deserving applicants.

Andrew Jackson's policies divided the old Republican Party. Two parties grew out of the old Republican Party. The Democratic Republicans, or Democrats, adhered to Jackson; and the National Republicans, or Whigs, opposed him.

Andrew Jackson's leadership style made him somewhat unpopular. Hostile cartoonists portrayed him as King Andrew I. Behind accusations by his opponents lay the fact that Jackson, unlike previous Presidents, did not defer to Congress in policy-making but used his power of the veto and his party leadership to assume command.

14

Page 15: Great Smokey Mountains - Tredyffrin/Easttown School District€¦  · Web viewis a word used in place of a noun. Usually pronouns refer to something that was already mentioned in

The greatest party battle centered around the Second Bank of the United States. It was established as a private corporation but in fact, it was virtually a Government-sponsored monopoly. When Jackson appeared hostile toward it, the Bank threw its power against him. Clay and Webster, who had acted as attorneys for the Bank, led the fight in Congress. Jackson charged the Bank with undue economic privilege. He won approval from the American electorate; in 1832, he polled more than 56 percent of the popular vote and almost five times as many electoral votes as Clay.

In January of 1832, while the President was dining with friends at the White House, someone whispered to him that the Senate had rejected the nomination of Martin Van Buren as Minister to England. Jackson jumped to his feet and exclaimed, "By the Eternal! I'll smash them!" So he did. His favorite, Van Buren, became Vice President, and succeeded to the Presidency when "Old Hickory" retired to the Hermitage, where he died in June 1845.
