Tredyffrin/Easttown Music Parent Organization Fall 2014
NOTES
2
What is
TEMPO is short for the Tredyffrin/Easttown Music Parent Organization. It is an organization of parents and other interested adults whose objective is to further the music program in the T/E school district. The primary mission of TEMPO is to support the music programs throughout the T/E School District. TEMPO plans and provides the means to fund programs, activities, and trips for CHS music students which are not paid for by the district. TEMPO’s primary goals are to provide the resources and opportunities to encourage and challenge students musically and to add to the enjoyment of the music program through large group participation such as concerts and half-time performances during football games. We encourage participation in competitions, parades, and trips for formal recognition of the CHS music groups. The relationships that develop among students, family, and community begin the very first day of school and continue throughout the CHS years. It is a rewarding and memorable experience for all. While TEMPO is highly visible at Marching Band events, it is important to know that TEMPO helps support:
• Guys Harmonize & Gal Chorale at the middle schools • Rising 9th grade meet and greet • TriM receptions • The end of year Music Banquet • TEMPO scholarships and awards to graduating seniors • Music in our schools • And more!
TEMPO also makes very generous donations to the Disney Trip and to the Broadway Trip. Funds raised from concession stand sales and the ’Stoga Showcase of Sound Cavalcade of Bands support all music programs. We encourage parents of all music students to be part of TEMPO through our many volunteer opportunities and to participate in our individual and main TEMPO fundraising activities. Membership in TEMPO is $30 a year per family participating in the music groups at Conestoga. This small fee is necessary to offset operational costs and to ensure monies raised through fundraising efforts will go directly to the respective students. This fee should be handed into the Music Office or mailed to TEMPO, PO Box 1324, Southeastern, PA 19399-1324. Please make out the check to TEMPO and be sure your child’s name and grade are clearly marked.

Now into our second week of September, school is going strong, and the entertaining and nostalgic strains of QUEEN can be heard throughout the neighborhood on Wednesday and Friday evenings during Marching Band practice and football game halftime shows. We can’t stop humming along to Bicycle Race, Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Bohemian Rhapsody and We are the Champions whenever we hear them! Everyone’s hard work during the two weeks of Band Camp in August has really paid off. This is a show that is not to be missed. Special thanks go to Edie Lewis and Mary Frances Szpila for their leadership in organizing the uniforms for the color guard and band members, and Linda McAllister for her assistance with the Pit.
Our home season got off to a surprise start last week when the away Ridley football
game was changed to Conestoga. Not to worry: our fantastic Concession Stand chairs (Jess Pragada, Sherri Gartner), volunteer VP Bonnie Motel and Lead Shopper Shefali Macedo made sure that we had plenty of beverages, hot dogs, popcorn, pizza, cheeseburgers and more ready to go at game time. It was certainly a hot night but a lot of fun. Many thanks to all of our parents who came to help at the Concession Stands or to unload cars on Wednesday night. We have five more home games this season and there is plenty of opportunity to be part of it. No experience necessary.
However, the Marching Band is not all that is going on this fall. We’ll be hosting our 5th
annual ’Stoga Showcase of Sound Cavalcade of Bands on November 1st. It has grown to include 18 bands and is a highlight of the Cavalcade Season. Among other events, we’ll be helping with Kiss the Cast at the Fall Drama, assisting at the TriM Music Honors reception, Gal Chorale and Guys Harmonize, and we’ll be topping off 2014 with the eagerly anticipated DISNEY TRIP.
You can see how TEMPO benefits all music programs. But TEMPO is only able to do
what it does because of our volunteers. We encourage all parents to come and help at an event. It is a fantastic way to support your children and meet new people. Plus, it’s really easy to do, we promise! Please feel free to reach out to one of the board members or committee chairs with any questions. We will be glad to hear from you.
This is an exciting fall for the entire Music Program. Looking forward to a fantastic season!
Leslie Susskind and Joan Colbert, TEMPO Co-Presidents
A warm back-to-school Welcome from TEMPO!

News from Mrs. Dickinger
Welcome, Parents and Students, to the Conestoga High School Choral Program!
* There are four different performing choral organizations in the curriculum: Concert Choir (non-auditioned – SATB music) Chanteuses (non-auditioned – SSAA music) Camerata (auditioned 11th and 12th graders – SSAATTBB music) Chorale (auditioned 9th and 10th graders – SATB music) In addition, students in grades 10 – 12 (and 9th-grade tenors) may consider auditioning for the District 12 Chorus. Copies of the three audition pieces have already been distributed. Call or email Mrs. Dickinger ([email protected]) if you want to download the individual recordings from Box.net. * Participation in the choral organizations provides you with the opportunity to experience performing many different kinds of music. In fact, one of my basic objectives is having you sing pieces: (1) from all musical eras beginning with the Renaissance; (2) in different languages and contrasting styles; (3) accompanied and a cappella; and (4) secular and sacred. (Please note: singing sacred music does not indicate an affiliation with a particular religion. Rather, sacred music is utilized in a cultural and historical context). I EXPECT ALL CHORAL STUDENTS TO PERFORM THIS WIDELY DIVERSE SELECTION OF MUSIC! * All students are provided with a choir folder and their own copies of each piece of music. They are responsible to return all music after each concert and the folder at the end of the year, or they will incur a debt!!!!! *All choral students MUST complete the “Conestoga High School Choirs 2014-15 Form”, which is located at stogamusic.com. * The choirs are only as good as each individual’s performance. Consequently, every rehearsal is important. (Although you may know your music, you are not helping the overall sound quality if you are not there singing)! Each concert is equivalent to a final exam and obviously cannot be taken at a later date, so do not miss performances or the two required evening rehearsals before each concert! The stogamusic.com calendar is available for reference and updated weekly to help avoid conflicts. * All choral families are encouraged to become members of TEMPO (the Tredyffrin-Easttown Music Parents Organization). The primary goals of TEMPO are: supporting ALL the music programs throughout the TE School District; providing the resources and opportunities to encourage and musically challenge students; and awarding membership pins, letters, and scholarships. They also provide fundraising opportunities for the Disney World/Universal trip in December. I strongly encourage the parents of choral music students to become active – WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP! Parents are strongly encouraged to register on the TEMPO website (at stogamusic.com) to receive emails and Music Dept. notifications. * This year should again prove to be musically exciting. The Winter Concert will feature “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff. Our 8th annual “Guys Harmonize” workshop will take place in November, and our 5th annual middle school “Gal Chorale” event will occur in October. I can’t wait to see all my returning students and welcome the new ones to our music family!

* Conestoga’s Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter (Modern Music Masters) will have new inductions on October 1, 2014. (Prospective students have already submitted their applications and should be rehearsing for their September performance requirement). Tri-M offers students the forum to share and enjoy the diversities of their musical experiences. It also provides recognition for musical achievements, scholarship, and character and presents opportunities for service. The 2014-15 officers include: President – Asher Goldfinger, Vice President – Nick Cruickshank, Secretary – Sarah Whelan, and Historian – Alex Schanne. * The following choir officers will be integral in helping the Conestoga Music Department function smoothly throughout the school year:
OFFICERS President – Pat Evans

The Fifth Annual Cavalcade of Bands
Conestoga High School—Berwyn PA
Saturday, November 1, 2014
Dear Community Member:
The Tredyffrin Easttown Music Parents Organization (“TEMPO”), together with the
Conestoga High School music department, is pleased to announce that this fall we will
host the fifth annual ‘Stoga Showcase of Sound Cavalcade competition, which features
marching band and color guard performances. With more than 2,000 spectators, volun-
teers, marching band members and their families from the southeastern PA region attend-
ing this exciting event, the Cavalcade is an ideal way to reach a large audience.
The Cavalcade is a fundraiser for the CHS music department; proceeds from this
event go toward our instrumental and vocal music programs. We are looking for event
sponsors and businesses to advertise in the Cavalcade program book. Your advertising
dollars will play an important role in helping students to develop not only their musical
skills, but also teamwork, discipline and leadership—skills they will need to be successful
adults.
We offer various levels of ads and sponsorships to fit a wide range of budgets, and
hope that you will consider joining us to make this our most successful Cavalcade ever.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
TEMPO & The ‘Stoga Showcase of Sound Committee

Volunteer Duties
1) Concession Stand Worker/Concession Grill Worker - Volunteers are needed at both the home stand (closest to Conestoga) and the away stand (opposite side of the field) for all home games. Jobs range from food prep (popcorn, hotdogs, hamburgers, hot drinks) to selling items at the windows to restocking food and drinks as needed. There is a job to suit everyone and although it can sometimes get very busy, it can be great fun too! 2) Bus Chaperone - Volunteers for this job are needed for all away games as well as other Cavalcade performances that require the band to travel. Duties include riding to/from the games on the band buses. It’s a great way to see our band kids perform away from home and meet other band parents. 3) Costco Food Pickup/Delivery - Volunteers are needed on Wednesday evenings prior to each home game to pick up and deliver food that will be sold in the concession stands. The food order is placed with Costco in King of Prussia and volunteers meet there to have their car loaded with supplies which are then transported to the concession stands at Teamer field. It is recommended that you have an SUV or similar sized vehicle. 4) Senior Recognition Night (10/31) - Volunteers coordinate the recognition ceremony for our band seniors. 5) Tri-M Reception (10/1) - Volunteers are needed to help organize a reception for the newly inducted members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. 6) Guys Harmonize/Gal Chorale/8th Grade Meet & Greet - Volunteer is needed to coordinate food for these in-school music department events. Involves arranging for water, pizza and cookies. 7) Jazz Festival (2/15) - Volunteers will be needed to assist with concessions and other tasks related to organizing this event.
8) Music Banquet (5/15) - Volunteers assist with organizing and running the annual end of year music banquet. The banquet recognizes all students in the music program for their accomplishments throughout the year. 9) General Volunteer - You are available to assist as needed.

In order for your child to reach his or her potential in music, private instruction is highly recommended. The TE School District has a wealth of talented and motivating private instructors in the area. Some will come to the home and are indicated with an*. There are several institutions and music stores that offer instruction on all instruments. They are indicated at the bottom of the list.
