Discover the Romance of Rail The whistle sounds, the wheels turn and you gaze wistfully out the window – the journey begins.

Holidays by rail aren’t something new – in the golden age of travel they opened up the world to adventure-seekers who wanted to experience the pleasures of life abroad in a comfortable, convenient and completely relaxing way. We have sought to recreate this ideal by taking you on an incredible journey along Europe’s illustrious railways.

WHY TAKE THE TRAIN? Nowadays, when speed of arrival seems to be the imperative, the enjoyment of the journey itself is often overlooked. On our premium rail holidays, we return you to a time when travelling was an art in itself. The pleasure of simply experiencing some of Europe’s most famous trains and railways will be a memorable part of your holiday, with a constant panorama of countryside and cityscape that will put you right at the heart of the countries you’re travelling through.

CAPTIVATING SCENERY The ever-changing scenery will enthral you as you’re whisked through diverse landscapes and isolated villages that cannot be accessed by any other form of transport. Whether you’re following the tracks between the undulating hills of Tuscany; making horseshoe curves, twists and turns through mountainous ravines in the Alps; or passing Andalucia’s lofty villages and orange blossoms, the train provides the ideal viewpoint, making each journey both a contrast and a highlight.

A MORE COMFORTABLE WAY TO TRAVEL It won’t take you long to realise why so many travellers rave about taking the train, some calling it their best friend in Europe. It really is your perfect travel companion. With ample leg room, you’re able to sit back and relax in your seat or enjoy a quiet read. You can sample delicious meals, snacks and drinks, either served at your seat or in the restaurant or bar. If you wish, you can stretch your legs and walk around, and perhaps enjoy a chat with your Tour Manager and fellow travellers. An exciting adventure awaits every time you step aboard – and you are always looking forward to the next one.

Travel through inspiring landscapes aboard the Glacier ExpressAdmire the masterful engineering required to build the Flåm Railway

Europe’s Iconic Trains & RailwaysWe’re delighted to introduce you to these famous trains and epic rail networks.

From fantastic heritage railways to futuristic high-speed trains zipping from city to city, your experience will be so much more than your average train ride.

GLACIER EXPRESS Known as the world’s slowest express, this bright red train meanders through the hypnotic landscapes of the Swiss Alps, travelling between glamorous St Moritz and car-free Zermatt. There is a good reason for the leisurely chug of the Glacier Express: it must navigate 91 tunnels, 291 bridges and the 2,000-metre-high Oberalp Pass. Skylights and panoramic windows frame the rugged splendour of the Alps – craggy peaks, forested mountainsides and lush meadows make the picture nothing but perfect.

VENICE SIMPLON-ORIENT-EXPRESS The original Orient Express became the hallmark for Art Deco elegance. When the railway first opened in 1883, the world changed forever. Today, it still embodies the grandeur of the golden age of travel in Europe, everything from the familiar train whistle to the uniformed, white-gloved attendants helping on the platform. Whether you’re a fan of Agatha Christie or James Bond, or simply drawn to the dazzling yesteryear of the 1920s and 30s, this legendary journey is sure to capture your imagination.

FLÅM RAILWAY Defined by rushing waterfalls, deep ravines and mountain farms clinging to the slopes, the Flåm Railway is a little line that bravely traverses some of Norway’s most remote scenery. Not only is it one of the world’s steepest railways, it’s also one of the boldest examples of engineering in Norwegian railway history. Tunnels twist and swirl in and out of the mountains as you’re whisked through the Flåm Valley via the largest fjord in Europe, the Sognefjord.

JUNGFRAU RAILWAY If you’ve always dreamed of reaching great heights, Switzerland’s Jungfrau Railway is your ticket to achieving this goal. This popular cogwheel line takes train-goers to the Jungfraujoch – Europe’s highest railway station.

CIRCUMETNEA RAILWAY Mount Etna is the commanding presence of Sicily’s skyline. Running a 110-kilometre circle around the volcano’s base is the charming Circumetnea train, a narrow-gauge railway once used by farmers to reach their land further afar. Otherworldly lava fields make for a truly exhilarating ride.

WEST HIGHLAND LINE It was on the train from Manchester to London when J.K. Rowling first imagined the magical world of Harry Potter. Her famous Hogwarts Express would later be captured on film as part of Scotland’s wonderful West Highland Line, with the Jacobite Steam Train as its star. Known as the ‘Iron Road to the Isles’, this route doesn’t leave from Platform 9 3/4, but from Glasgow, making its ascent through highland valleys, past romantic glens and Britain’s highest mountain, Ben Nevis.

KYLE LINE Completed in 1897, the historic Kyle Line was an expensive feat for its time. The final leg between Stromeferry and Kyle of Lochalsh required 31 cuttings and 29 tunnels, all carved out of solid rock. The result? A striking railway taking you from Scotland’s east to west, descending to the unwrinkled waters of Loch Carron.

HIGH-SPEED RAIL NETWORKS Europe is big, really big. You can relax knowing this continent is well-connected by a stunningly efficient rail network. The TGV (Train à Grande Vitesse) and InterCityExpress or ICE trains can only be described in one word: fast. These networks have revolutionised rail travel, with stylish, comfortable and aerodynamic trains criss-crossing all throughout Europe.

EXPERIENCES TO SAVOUR Travelmarvel provides a range of hand-picked dining experiences that reveal the region’s diverse culinary wonders and make your holiday extra special.

Vienna’s Sumptuous Sachertorte There’s one thing the Viennese take very seriously – chocolate cake. In particular, the indulgent Sachertorte sponge, which has been the cause for both competition and controversy. Savour a slice over a coffee in a traditional cafe.

Enjoy a Hungarian Classic It may not be the most attractive, but goulash has a talent for warming the heart. Visit a local restaurant in Budapest and try the national dish.

Embark on a Gourmet Rail Journey Dining aboard the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is a true culinary event. The sumptuous surrounds of the Lalique glass-panelled dining cars are tantalising themselves, but then comes the food. Carefully prepared with the region’s finest produce, your four-course dinner is set to be a triumph.

A Zest for Life in Sorrento When life gives you lemons, make limoncello. This is the norm among the residents of Sorrento on Italy’s south-west coast, where lemon terraces line the tumbling seaside cliffs and fruit-laden branches rise like church arches. The fruit grown here is pleasantly scented and has a sweet, tangy flavour. Tasting the locally made limoncello liqueur is like a delicious kiss from the sun itself.

Flavours of Swedish Lapland Set in the heart of Sápmi, the land of the Sami people, Swedish Lapland’s culinary traditions date back thousands of years. Enjoy the bounty of nature as you dine on rustic Sami specialties.

DISCOVER ITALY

From its ancient and classical cities to undulating hillsides and sleepy villages, Italy has something to offer every traveller. Experience the very essence of this storied nation as you discover stylish Milan, the Eternal City of Rome, Renaissance Florence and the labyrinthine canals of Venice. Heading further south, you have Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast’s soaring cliffs and colourful, windswept villages where bright yellow lemons are striking against the lush groves and blue of the sea. And at Italy’s toe, the island of Sicily is yet another adventure.

TRAVERSE THE ALPS

Forming the largest mountain system in Europe, the Alps cast a spell over you, their silent, brooding peaks etching themselves in your memory. It might come as a surprise that such rugged and intangible landscapes make the perfect host for rail travel. Following carved valleys through Switzerland and Italy, these iconic railroads thread in and out of the slopes. Such incredible feats of engineering have translated into some of the world’s most picturesque rail journeys – notably the Glacier Express, which couldn’t be more at home in the mountains.

GRAND CITIES

It’s no secret that Europe is a continent of epic proportions. It presents vastly different cultures and climates, a past both brutal and innovative, and alluring cities that ignite imaginations the world over. You’ll love being within easy reach to the monumental sights of Berlin, while in Dresden, a stroll down Brühl’s Terrace is a walk through history with spires, domes and towers all in view. Boasting beautiful architecture, vibrant cafes and majestic rivers, the imperial cities of Vienna, Budapest and Prague each have their own magic, too.

BEST OF SCOTLAND

There is so much more to Scotland than bagpipes, tartan and mythical monsters. Travelling through the country’s rolling west, an amphitheatre of steely lochs and enchanting glens lie in wait as you begin your ascent into the Scottish Highlands. Feeling as though you’ve stepped straight onto a film set, learn about age-old clans as you visit historic castles and the charming Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides. Nothing could top off this wonderful round trip like a fun evening on the stately Royal Mile in Edinburgh, a city long held in the hearts of discerning travellers.

SCANDINAVIAN SPLENDOUR

The heavenly fjords of Norway combine with Sweden’s tranquil landscapes and colourful cottages on an epic journey that includes every great Scandinavian rail experience. Cross the Arctic Circle into Swedish Lapland, so remote that the average number of people per square kilometre is just two. This isolation results in friendly locals who can’t wait to meet you and share their stories and culture. You’ll also follow the River Rauma as it winds through windswept plateaus, and traverse railways that are among the highest and steepest in Europe.

ANDALUCIAN SPAIN

A journey to Spain promises to be a glorious mélange of vibrancy, flavour and colour, such is the seductive nature of this country. You’ll begin in Madrid, Spain’s bustling capital, before discovering the rich cultural heritage of Andalucia. Feel alive in the pulsating city of Seville, which burns with the passion of Flamenco dance. Next up is sunny Granada, famous for its Moorish citadel, the Alhambra. Then there’s Barcelona, a city captivating in its cosmopolitan style, unique architecture and world-renowned dining – the delights are endless.

Journey into the ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’

Take in Norway’s incredible natural wonders

Day 9. Rauma Railway, Geiranger. Stunning scenery awaits today as we join the 114-kilometre-long Rauma Railway for a journey through magnificent, contrasting landscapes. We navigate the same course as the emerald waters of the River Rauma as it winds around the hillsides below jagged peaks for much of the journey. As we climb over mountain plateaus, we are treated to awesome views across the expansive and unspoiled national parks that stretch into the distance. We’ll spend the next two nights in Geiranger. Stay (Two Nights): Union Hotel Geiranger. BD

Day 10. Geirangerfjord Cruise. We take in the exquisite scenery of the spectacular Geirangerfjord by boat today. As we cruise along the serene, deep water, the steep sides of the fjord seem to tower over the boat. This World Heritage-listed site is alive with colours and contrasts – the lush greens of the trees clinging to the rock set against the deep blue water and the brilliant white of the snow-capped peaks in the distance. When it rains, waterfalls appear from nowhere, flowing majestically over exposed rocky outcrops and crashing into the water below. B

Day 11. Flåm. We leave Geiranger by coach this morning, continuing our scenic voyage through Norway’s incredible fjord country. Travel through valleys hemmed in by lofty mountains and along steep-sided fjords, every bend in the road a new and interesting perspective. We reach Flåm at the head of the Aurlandsfjord. Stay: Flåm, Fretheim Hotel. BD

Day 12. Flåm Railway, Bergen. Today we enjoy a superb excursion aboard the Flåm Railway. Our journey takes us up into the mountains along one of the steepest railways in the world, twisting and turning as the line accommodates the extreme terrain. We reach the end at Myrdal and return to Flåm. Here we board an express boat for an afternoon cruise along Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord. After navigating coastal islets and skerries, the day ends in Bergen. Stay (Two Nights): Bergen, Clarion Hotel Admiral. BD

Day 13. Bergen. There’s plenty of opportunities to explore Bergen with a full day at leisure. The town is nestled beneath seven hills and is surrounded by fjords. Bryggen, the old city, is a World Heritage site, and the Fløibanen funicular railway affords great views of the city and its harbours from the top of Mount Fløien. B

Day 14. Bergen Railway, Oslo. We depart Bergen by train for a magnificent journey on Northern Europe’s highest railway line, the Bergen Railway. The train climbs high above the tree line across some of the most remote and remarkable areas of Western Norway, before descending through pastures on the way to Oslo. Stay: Oslo, Thon Hotel Opera. BD

Day 15. Depart Oslo. This morning is free to spend at leisure in Oslo before transferring to the airport for your onward flight. B

BOOKING & PAYING FOR YOUR HOLIDAY

AIRFARES Air travel is not included. However, Travelmarvel can arrange air travel in connection with your holiday package. All airfares are subject to flight and booking class availability. Airfares will be booked and ticketed upon receipt of your additional deposit to avoid price or tax increases. Airport taxes vary for each departure point and routing of airline. Airline schedules are subject to change without notice. Once air tickets are issued, airline amendment and/or cancellation fees apply and, in some cases, are non-refundable. Name changes and voluntary date

and schedule changes will incur fees. Travelmarvel is not liable for delays or disruptions of air travel. Once tickets are issued Travelmarvel will have no other liability and will not be responsible for refunding the cost of any services booked in conjunction with the flights.

For your protection we strongly recommend that you purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes (without limitation) coverage for medical expenses, loss of luggage, cruise and land content and airfare charges that may occur due to cancellation, disruption, loss of deposit or strikes.

We strongly recommend you check the details carefully and read the included information. Please ensure that you check your flight timings carefully on your tickets, particularly early morning departures. Approximately 21 days before departure you will receive your final itinerary. However in the case of late bookings, charges or late payment, tickets may be emailed to you.

SPECIAL REQUESTS Where a special request (e.g. diet, room location, twin or double-bedded room, a particular facility at a hotel, flight seat requests and/or particular meals) is an important factor in your choice of holiday, you must advise us when your booking is made. Travelmarvel will pass your request onto the hotel, airline or other supplier but cannot guarantee that it will be accommodated. Travelmarvel will also pass on any dietary requests to the airline (when booking your air) but we strongly recommend that you check directly with the airline once your tickets have been issued. The provision of any special request does not constitute a term of your contract with us. Confirmation that a special request has been noted or passed on to the supplier or the inclusion of the special request on your invoice or any other document is not confirmation that the request will be met. Unless and until specifically confirmed, all special requests are subject to availability.

CREDIT CARD SURCHARGES If you pay Travelmarvel by credit card, surcharges of between 1% and 3% will be added your tour price.
