Ask a localWhat do Warrnambool locals love to show-off most? They nudge visitors along to Logan’s Beach for a spot of whale watching, out to Tower Hill to explore ancient volcanic landscapes and then wander the Thunder Point Coastal Trail. And that’s barely touching the surface. There’s the famous Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, art galleries, heritage trails, amazing shopping and much more.

Warrnambool is a natural for getting up close and personal with wildlife, ancient landscapes and programs dedicated to conservation.

Whale watchingWarrnambool’s number one write-home-about experience. Bring your binoculars, stake out a vantage spot at Logan’s Beach and await a rare glimpse of a Southern Right Whale. Between June and September, these majestic mammals return to calve in these waters, often swimming within a hundred metres off the shore. Check ahead for whale sighting info at the Warrnambool Visitor Information Centre, Freecall: 1800 637 725.

Tower Hill Wildlife ReserveA haven for native wildlife, indigenous culture and unique volcanic geology. Pack up the kids (and a picnic) and explore wetlands on the Lava Tongue Boardwalk, climb the peak or take a fascinating 90-minute bushwalk alongside a Worn Gundidj guide. Expect to spy koalas, emus, kangaroos, sugar gliders and waterbirds. Visit: worngundidj.org.au

Meet the MaremmasIn season, join a guided tour to Middle Island to meet Eudy and Tula, the clever conservation dogs who protect the island’s Little Penguin colony. Off-season, track them down at the Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and learn how the penguin population is thriving under this novel conservation program.

Warrnambool is front and centre to an incredible coastline fringed with unique and dramatic landscapes. Sun-kissed in summer and ruggedly fresh in winter, it’s an all-season shoreline and hinterland, whether you strip down to your bathers or rug up in a jacket and scarf.

Sun, surf and sandAn array of beaches, from renowned surf breaks to lifeguard patrolled swimming beaches, surround the bustling city. Experienced boarders head to The Flume or Japs, a powerful beach break that pumps in moderate swell and northerly winds.Worm Bay, on the Main Beach, is shallow and family-friendly. For stunning scenery, take the walking track from Thunder Point to Shelley Beach.

River viewsBacked by lush dairy country, Hopkins Falls is a must visit location for a picnic, fishing or simply for a memorable photo. For a few days in early summer each year keep an eye out for baby eels that migrate upstream over the falls. The Hopkins River mouth offers visitors beautiful cliffs and rock formations, it is also a popular fishing spot. Nearby is the National Trust classified Proudfoot’s Boathouse.

Easy reachGrab your camera and capture the snap-worthy coastline in all its glory. Pimp your visit with a sunset arrival or a helicopter flight. Tick off London Bridge, Loch Ard Gorge and, on the way home, the lesser-known but strikingly beautiful Bay of Islands.
