GREAT BOOK OF

The aim of The Great Book of Tottenham has been to record the lives of the people of Tottenham over a period of one year, using photography, video, music, verbatim recordings and personal testimonies to reflect the communities attitudes, aspirations, hope sand fears. The project was concieved and implimented by young people from the Future Jobs Fund – supported by artists and community arts workers from The Bernie Grant Arts Centre, Bruce Castle Museum and the generousity of the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It is a testament to a community in a moment in time as well as to the efforts of a group of local young people and artists who have dedicated their time to the project. Without these people and the community of Tottenham this project would not have been possible - it has been a massive collaboration.

The name Seven Sisters is derived from seven elms which were planted in a circle with a walnut tree at their centre on an area of common land known as Page Green.

In his early Seventeenth century work, Brief Description of Tottenham, local vicar and historian William Bedwell picked out the walnut tree for particular mention. He wrote of it as a local ‘arboreal wonder’ which ‘flourished without growing bigger’. It is thought that the trees perhaps stand on a sacred grove or pagan place of worship. ‘Page Green’ may well have once been ‘Pagan Green’.

Over the years the trees have been replanted as they grew to old, or to mark special occasions, this planting is traditionaly carried out by seven sisters from a local family.

I think with Seven Sisters, there’s a lot more, a better place to settle down because, your near a lot of places. You’re near central London. You’re near the tube station; especially as I tend to travel a lot these days. I think for me I can use Seven Sisters Rd as a crossroads to other places.

My name is Guy, Bill Guy, and I am almost 80 years old, I was born in British Guyana, but I came over in 49-50 when I was a young man in the service of the American Navy. I met an English in Japan who brought me to Tottenham. I was 19 and he was about 27 but he took a fondness to me, we became good, good friends. I came with him on the Train in 1950 and came to stay with his wife where they lived in Philip Lane.

Tottenham’s changed a lot in the last 60 years, In the early 50’s I used to get in a bit of trouble. One time I got beaten so badly I ended up in Hospital for three months, when I came out I took up boxing as a hobby for protetion. I went there in 56-57 and I got to be an amature boxer, I boxed in Hornsey Townhall and at the Alexander Palace.

They left me alone after that . . .

GREAT BOOK OF A regular at Manions

The pub Manions leans, calm and steady proping up the corner of the street, strong, imposing, unaproachable to some, it stands, strong without being brash, the hardened windows and chair barred doors argue its not one to be messed with.

It is a proud building. I rember the first time I walked into Manions, it had that familar pub smell. The sort of smell that only well loved pubs ever get, of stories well told, of larger, of smoke, of hope and sorrow, of the black stuff and the many mother-lands of its inhabitants. A traditional pub you could say, and traditionaly guarded to new-comers.

Over the past few years, I have gotten to know it better. I see it now for what it really is: A home. A refuge. A place of comfort for lonely travelers. A family. A community. Welcoming and supportive. If you make friends here you’ve made them for life.

Sure, I was wrong when I thought it just leant propping up the street, but the truth is the street leans on Manions, and if your respectful mind, you’ll find a place happy to take the strain.

August Rain

Today the rain falls,Tears to the groundfor the beautiful and the damned,I can hear the screams of siren sounds.

Today the rain lands, soothe the wounds of the broken, give way to the break dawn chorusIf only their song could last, couldn’t it drown out the roarof the night before?

My heart turns tight like fingers grip a brickas hate rises like heat, while anger is the flamethat tore thru the upstairs blew out sense and set mortar ablaze…My hope turns lax.

Today the rain lashes,So fierce, so abrupt. And like they who came in the nightthere is no regard,no pre-warning for the heart,as the harder the rain the stronger the hurt in these veins, the more disappointment your chest holdstill even your breath comes out cold. This is the true meaning of acid rain.

Today the rain did not stop, and left us with no time to ask

what have we become?
