THE WILLOW STORYUnique to the industry, Gray-Nicolls grow only the finest English willow for the production of their cricket bats. Salix Caerulea or Alba Var varieties are grown and harvested by the Company in a willow replenishment programme pioneered nearly 100 years ago.

1 UNLOADINGThe willow arrives in Robertsbridge and is cut into roundels. The roundels are sealed and left to dry for a few days.

2 SPLITTINGEach roundel has its bark stripped and is marked ready for splitting into clefts. A cleft in its roughest form is cut and ready for machining.

3 DRYINGThe cleft is graded at this point and left for 6 weeks to air-dry which reduces its naturally high moisture content.

4 HANDLEThe handle is turned on a lathe to create the perfect shape. Each handle is then fitted into the cleft by hand.

Clefts are air-dried for approximately six weeks to ensure perfect moisture content and the very best performance. Every aspect of the bat-making process is carefully overseen to guarantee a product of excellent quality.

All bats are given a final quality control inspection. Performance is tested using a Lignum Vitae mallet. In this way the world renowned quality and performance of Gray-Nicolls bats is ensured.

5 SHAPINGOur Master Bat Makers ensure each bat is shaped to provide optimum balance, pick-up and performance.Bats are carefully sanded and buffed to give them their finished look and feel.

6 PRESSINGEach bat is then pressed, compressing the natural fibres enhancing the performance of each bat and providing the blade with its bow.

7 BINDINGThe handle is then bound and glued to add more strength.

8 LABELINGFinally the labels are carefully applied and the grip is fitted.

BAT GRADING & FINISHESWillow grading is initially based on the cosmetic quality of the cleft. We subsequently combine this early stage grading with a performance grading policy. This means that some minor natural cosmetic timber blemishing may be overlooked on higher grade bats in favour of very strong blade rebound performance.

LEGEND Legend represents the premium 1% of available willow, optimum cosmetic quality and strike performance with an outstanding weight to profile ratio.

LIMITED EDITIONLimited to the best 5% of the willow tree. All white willow, straight grains and a clean hitting area, optimum strike performance, clean strike zone and even grain.

PLAYERS The best 12% of the tree. Mainly white willow with some minor pin-marks or blemishes. Excellent rebound performance quality, clean strike zone, slight unevenness in grain structure are tolerated.

5 STARThe best 40% of the tree. Up to 50% red willow (which comes from the heart of the tree and is favoured by many of our international players). Strong performing blade with minor strike zone blemishes and some deviation in grain structure tolerated. Bats with very narrow grains (particularly those with a red edge) are more likely to have some inconsistency in grain structure (evenness and straightness).

All other models are made from the remaining willow which is all grown, felled and processed exclusively by Gray-Nicolls.

This is why we apply a strict policy of examination before we offer specific information on a warranty claim or maintenance advice.Damage caused by consistent use beyond a season,

inaccurate play, inadequate blade preparation, use in wet conditions, poor storage or misuse would not be eligible for claim under warranty.

Most damage that occurs is of a superficial nature that has no effect on blade performance. However, we do recommend getting your bat repaired by a

specialist after each season or as significant wear occurs. Damage left un-checked in the long term can undermine the bat life-span and striking power.
