Graphic Design Unit Reflection: This unit has probably been the most challenging for me this year. I have had issues with not handing my work in on time. I’m not going to make up some excuse for that because I don’t have one. Basically, I was lazy this semester. Probably because the stress caused by the people, environments, and objects that I have to face every day. In hand made art such as painting and drawing, I can express these frustrations and emotions. However, when it comes to creating a product design with specific requirements, expressing these feeling can be near impossible. I am going to be 100% honest. Art used to be my only vent for these frustrations, and having to bend over backwards to produce perfection took that away from me. This is probably why I fail to produce on time: because none of my art is genuine. For a person like me, being dishonest and fake in a creative process is grueling, and emotionally draining. If you think about it, a perfect lie is prettier than the real jagged truth. This unit has been an emotional journey for me. I have been able to see what it is like to not express the truth in my work, and how it jeopardizes my performance. Having to deal with the consequences of this leads me into an endless and unhealthy cycle of stress. In this unit, I learned how stressful it can be to produce a certain and very specific product within a given time frame. I have seen how graphic designers have to work, and I certainly have sympathy for them now. Our deadlines were pretty generous. I was told that some designers don't even have half the time that we are given to finish their product. Something technical that I learnt this semester is dealing with colors. I found myself staring at the color wheel a lot. Finding the right color for everything is essential. Dealing with color is much easier on a computer than on paper. I was able to how one color can support the other one. For example, with purple and yellow: This letter A is constructed through the purple boarder. The purple supports the yellow, because of the high contrast. Through this discovery, I gained the ability to make faster decisions on which colors to use where. I believe that this ability will be useful it future units. Overall, this unit was painfully successful. It was painful because (read first paragraph), but it was successful because I gained a lot of knowledge of what its like to be a working artist. Hopefully, I can get past this phase and produce artwork more effectively. Thank you.
