Summary

Graphic Design is an active course, focusing on the major components of graphic/digital art, and standard commercial art practices relating to still imagery. From its origins, to the use of traditional and digital tools, this course covers a range of assignments geared for the beginner to intermediate. Design students will routinely practice organizational habits on a daily basis, to include standard LAB conduct.

Conceptual thinking is ongoing, as students are expected to visually communicate ideas effectively. All preliminary and final works must meet project deadlines in accordance with course schedule.

After school assistance is available in the weekly SAP period. Students are further encouraged to utilize the LAB for personal advancement, aside from the necessary instructional assistance.

Grading Requirement:

• All GD work, including preliminary computer exercises and demos, will be properly organized in digital portfolio for grading

• Project summaries / exit tickets are digitally submitted with all major assignments

• Individual three ring binder / notebook will be submitted/graded biweekly (binders: to include weekly EQ/notation sheets, work/concept sheets, preliminary sketch assignments)

• HW assignments, reading responses and/or worksheets are due weekly for grading

• All students will be responsible for both individual design work and collaborative team involvement (project teams MP 2/4)

OverviewThroughout Graphic Design coursework, students will continually develop both digital and traditional hand skills. They are also required to utilize industry relevant vocabulary and LAB terminology, including the essential computer knowledge necessary to navigate the Macintosh Operating System and related design programs. Introductory assignments will fuse the basic functions of Adobe Photoshop into typographic designs, logotypes, digital collages, photo montages, and simple product graphics. Students will also sharpen their understanding of traditional hand lettering, accurate measuring, cutting, and manual construction. These exercises are purposed to help sharpen dexterity in preparation for larger projects.

• NOTE - MP1 is a crucial learning period. All design students will rely and build upon MP1 knowledge throughout the entire course progression.

The remainder of the course scaffolds on the previous learned knowledge, and introduces more advanced applications into industry related projects. Students will continually organize their workflow and adjust their workspaces according to preference. Course work covers image manipulation, advanced layering techniques, advanced selection techniques, masking, color theory and application, photo retouching, designing with grids, project layout, scanning and printing functions. Online tutorials will accompany extended assignments that combine the use of graphic imagery with typographic principles. Design students will also complete promotional materials for product advertisements, posters, magazine cover layouts, page spreads, greeting cards, album art, and/or package designs.

Throughout the course, design students are introduced to relevant historical content and exemplar works that support the current unit of study. Support materials are presented regularly as to provide effective solutions used in today’s design industry. Students can regularly access support materials and digital presentations through Google classroom.Aside from project based grades, students are evaluated on timely attendance, daily classwork, independent homework/readings, written reflections, as well as major marking period assessments on operating knowledge, program functions, relevant terminology, and design history.
