    Communication can

    be spoken (a word) or

    non-spoken (a smile).

    Communication hasmany ways, and

    happens all the time.

    Not only humans

    communicate, mostother animals do too.

    Some communication

    is done without

    thinking, such as by

    changing in posture

    How communication

    worksCommunication works

    by exchanging

    information or

    messages. In verybasic terms

    7/19

    1. The sender makesa message, from an

    idea. This is usually

    called encoding

    2. The sendertransmits the message

    through the medium.

    3. The recipientreceives the message

    and decodes it.

Besides the content of the message, there are

other things that are important. These are not part

of the message itself, but rather of its context Who is communicating, and what status doesthe communicator have.

Communication messages usually do notcome alone, but are accompanied by other

    messages. These are also interpreted.

For a message exchange to be successful, the

sender and the recipient must have agreed on a

vocabulary. The word hedge can mean completely

different things based on the context. In biology ahedge is a row of shrubs or trees that make a

barrier or form a border. In finance, a hedge is an

investment made to reduce the risk of another

investment. In linguistics a hedge is a word or setof words that make other words less important.

Without any information it is therefore very difficult

to know which hedge is really meant by the

    speaker.

    Graphic Design

Graphic design is a practical art which helps

communication. Visual information is formed in a

way that it produces a message. This can be doneby placing words and pictures in ways that will get

the attention of others. People who do graphic

design as work are called graphic designers. In

printed media, graphic design includestypography, organising illustration, book design,

    page layout, specifying print.

    Typography

Typography is a practical art: the art of arranging

how the printed word shall appear on the page.[1]Typography was born when print was born.

Indeed, the early types were copies of the

letterforms of scribes, and the design of roman

type was modelled on type used on Trajan'scolumn.

Typography includes not only letters, but all the set

of symbols in a font, and it includes the overall

design of a page or document. It applies to anymedium which may be read; therefore it includes

text on computer screens. A typographer may

design type, select fonts, and design the layout of

pages and books. The term does not cover the actof printing itself, though many of the early printers

    were themselves typographers.

    Illustration

An illustration is a picture that tries to get the

person looking at it to pay more attention to the

subject than to the art. Illustrations can be in the

form of a drawing, painting, photograph or other

    work of art.

Illustrations often have one of two purposes. One

is to give light to the subject. The other purpose isto decorate an informational text (such as a

    newspaper or article).
