as a part of multiple content areas, so students will better un-derstand the connections between the disciplines. For too long, Math, Social Studies, Science and English Language Arts were taught in isolation. This resolution will enable students to break down the walls between the content areas and be better prepared for the jobs of the next century. Through developing improved communication, critical thinking, problem solving, communica-tion and media literacy skills, students will be prepared to take on any new challenge beyond the school’s walls.

Resolution #3: GVCS will be responsible with and maxi-mize the upcoming Capital Project.

I am very excited about what the new Capital Project will bring to the district. I also recognize the need to maximize the repairs and improvements so they last. We will be very diligent and judicious with the spending and oversight provided on all aspects of the work completed. I am excited about the new roof, electrical, technological and campus improvements to come over the next two years. I am equally excited about the new learning spaces, expanded Technology classroom and new fitness center with extended community access. I am confident we will maxi-mize this project and ensure the repairs and improvements will last for many years.

Unlike most New Year’s resolutions, I am confident we will accomplish ours.

Happy New Year!

Dr. Brian Schmitt, Superintendent

Dear Genesee Valley Community,

Happy New Year! As we approach a New Year with a refreshed enthusiasm and clean slate, I would like to take this opportunity to share Genesee Valley CSD’s New Year’s Resolu-tions.

Resolution #1: GVCS will con-tinue to improve the frequency and effectiveness of communication with all constituents.

I am very proud of the quality of education students receive at Genesee Valley. I also recognize that communi-cation is often the most criticized aspect of the manner we accomplish our goals. I am committed to over-communicating with students, parents, faculty, staff and community members. The Leadership Team will continue to emphasize differentiating the way that we communicate with families and encourage a continued dialogue between school and home.

Resolution #2: GVCS will prepare students for the jobs of the next century.

The students of Genesee Valley CSD deserve the best educa-tion. We are committed to providing increased opportunities that prepare students for the jobs of the future. We are committed to offering courses and activities that align with a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) emphasis. We will continue to offer opportunities to solve real world problems

From the Superintendent

Three Resolutions I Know We Will Accomplish

Assembly Spotlights

Area VeteransVeteran’s Day this year

had a special assembly. Our students were privileged to hear first-hand accounts from veterans about what they did and what the day meant to them. GV students gave them an extended, stand-ing ovation for their time, energy, and service to our great country. Plans to make this day even better started the day after the assembly. It was a proud moment for GV and for the Veterans who have served our country!

Genesee Valley hosted the annual Senior Citizens’ Concert and Dinner on Tuesday, December 13. There were approximately 100 special guests in attendance for our annual event. Folks gathered for some fine mu-sical entertainment from our GVCS band and choir stu-dents, under the direction of Mr. Robbins, Mr. Telesca and Mr. Musingo. After the concert, our guests enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner prepared by our cafeteria staff in the decorated dining room. Dinner was served by our National Honor Society students, under the direction of Mrs. Horne and Ms. Donlon, Advisors. Thank you to all staff and students for volun-teering their time for a fun-filled evening.

GVCS will use the School Messenger System to notify parents with a recorded phone call, when school is closed or delayed. The district uses student informa-tion in Power School, so if your phone number has recently changed, please con-tact Denise Baker at 585-268-7937 or e-mail [email protected] with changes.

By Mrs. BabbittArt History students have been studying African Art through imagery, videos and dis-

cussion. In collaboration with Mr. Robbins demonstrating on a traditional Djembe (be-low), students were given a lesson by him with instruments and were encouraged to test the sounds and examine the materials used to create the instruments. By the end of class, students were playing an instrument to a beat that matched Mr.Robbins on the Djembe. To wrap up our African Art unit, we had students combine elements from imagery they learned about & incorporate something personal about themselves in a Mask. The masks are on display in the Art Wing (above). Enjoy!

By Myah BurtThe Genesee Valley students of Mrs.

Horne’s 12th grade Participation in Government (PIG) class worked hard to create a mock election for our school. Our goals were to give the opportunity to those unable to legally vote, to create an idea of how this area might vote, and compare our results with state and national figures. The students took time out of their PIG class; each senior had a job. Jobs included mak-ing a “Vote Today Sign”, creating ballots, making mock election booths, running the election polls on Tuesday November 8th, and counting the ballots at the end. The class had a lot of fun and got a chance to see what voting was like and how it was all set up. The day of the election, results came back to show that Donald Trump had won with 229 votes. Hilary Clinton took second with 81 votes, Gary Johnson with 28, Evan McMullin with 17, and last place Jill Stein with 15. Looking at the results you could say the Genesee Valley students predicted our President!

The New Year Brings Welcome Changes to 3-8 ELA and Math Assessments By Carol A. McCarville, Director of Curriculum and Instruction

Last year, in response to feedback from parents and members of the education community, State Education Department Commissioner MaryEllen Elia facilitated reforms in both the format and time limits of the Grade 3-8 assessments in ELA and Math. Welcomed by educators, these changes:

• Shortened the length of the tests; • Removed all time constraints.

This year, educators and parents will see a change in the scheduling of the assessments. The Common Core exam in ELA will be administered prior to spring break, specifically March 28th-30th. The exams in Math will not be administered until AFTER spring break: May 2nd-May 4th. The move to split the calendar is reflective of the Commissioner’s leadership and responsiveness to educators in the field, as well as families.

Once again, students will have as long as they need to finish their assessments during the day of administration. It is the hope of all that these changes will continue to lessen the stress and anxiety evidenced by many students in the past few years. Here at Genesee Valley we are positive the relaxed atmosphere will allow all students to perform their best and “show what they know”!

Even in a more relaxed atmosphere, State assessments can be stressful. There are a few simple things parents and caregivers can do at home to help their child perform their best:

• Be sure your child is well-rested, especially the night before the exam. • Insist on breakfast, whether at home or at school; food is fuel for the brain and body! • As much as possible, maintain a regular schedule in the days before the test. • Avoid scheduling medical and dental appointments during state assessments • Keep your child home if they are ill. • Let your child’s teacher know if he/she seems stressed over the state assessment; teachers can help calm those “test taking

nerves”, too!

If you have any questions regarding the state assessments or the schedule (see chart), please feel free to contact the building principal or myself at (585) 268-7913. Exact start times will be determined closer to the assessment date. Please do let us know if your child will be absent so we can schedule a make-up session

SAT and ACT Exams - Test fees are $39.50 for the ACT and $52.50 for the ACT plus writing. The SAT costs $52.50. Late fees are applied if registering after deadline. Registration sheets and access to the internet to register can be obtained in the Guidance office. There are fee waivers available.

Any juniors or seniors considering going to college should take one or both of these tests. Some two- year schools do not require either and give an Accuplacer exam. Please check in with Mrs. Preston before registering. Seniors should not be taking exams after February, it will be too late. We highly encourage juniors to take one or both of these exams this Spring/Summer so they have a chance for mul-tiple attempts!

Allegany County Area Founda-tion/Scholarships - Thank you to Denis Dahlgren who came to present to the seniors about the Allegany County Area Foundation. He provided information on all of the scholarships available within the county. The deadline for application com-pletion is January 31st. Also, a reminder to all seniors—check your mailboxes in the Guidance Office weekly for scholarship applications!

PSAT Results - PSAT results are in for the sophomores and juniors who took the exam in October. A copy will also be mailed home and Mrs. Preston will be going over the results with the students before December break.

Alma MaterAs the years may come and then go by, we will always think of thee, and in our hearts forevermore, we will sing this melody:

(refrain) Proudly stands our banner strong and true, for the green and black and white, it forever stands for victory, and for hope and love and life. Forever shall our Alma Mater stand for Genesee, while ringing through the valley hills, of our pride and loyalty.

On Friday, November 18th, Mr. Worboys and Mrs. Bowen's STEAM class visited Belfast Central School to learn more about Mr. Hazelton's hydroponic and aquaponic systems. After listening to a very informative presentation from the Belfast students, they trav-eled up to Castile to take a tour at Summer Breeze Hydroponic Strawberry Farm. The students will take the learn-ing experiences from both trips to help make their hydroponic prototype systems functional in the next unit in STEAM class.

By Lindsay MontagueThis year’s production, “Night of

Broadway” and dinner theatre that was previously scheduled for January, has unfortunately been canceled due to lack of participation. We will hopefully be able to continue this tradition in the future. The Drama team thanks the community for their support!

January Character Word of the Month is “Fair” – Agreeing with what is thought to be right or acceptable, treating people in a way that does not favor some over others.

February Character Word of the Month is “Choice” – The act of choosing: the act of picking or deciding between two or more possibilities, the opportunity to make a decision.

Genesee Valley Central School would like to thank Tops Friendly Market in Wellsville, NY for welcoming us into their store last month. Ms. Shaw and Mrs. Hutchison’s classes took a trip to Tops to do some Thanksgiving shopping. Their classes helped put together Thanksgiving baskets to support some local families over the holiday. Thank you Tops employees for making this shopping experience enjoyable for all. SH

Throughout the first ten weeks of school, students in Kindergarten through fifth grade were tasked with earning 9,000 PAWS for demonstrating Respectful, Responsible and Ready to Learn behaviors. As a result of their positive choices, the elementary school earned a combined 11,344 PAWS; the most PAWS earned in a 10-week period so far! They were rewarded for exceeding their goal with an afternoon of STEAM activities, where small groups worked together to build a Mouse House and an appara-tus to hold weight. Their next goal is to earn a total of 22,000 PAWS by February 3rd. Great job students!

GVCS Grades 7-8 Social Studies students traveled to Albany November 17-19 to participate in the 2016-17 NY Youth and Government Middle School Conference in Latham. This was a simulated democratic process in which students wrote a bill and attempted to get it passed by the Youth Assembly. They actually spent time in the NYS Assembly room where they debated and voted on student written legislation. This was a great experience for students.

Happy Holidays from the Elementary Art Room!Every year I find my heart swelling with pride as I watch our young artists exhibit kindness towards others. About

this time each year there has been a tradition within the art room to create ornaments. But these aren’t just any orna-ments. They are special ornaments that the Grusendorf family takes when they go to visit and carol at the Wellsville Manor.

The word of the month for December is Caring and as a way to make this connection to our daily lives, we dis-cussed what that looks like and how we can show others we care, even people we don’t know. Additionally, we discussed what it means to be a part of a community, both within our school and when we walk out those doors.

What makes this project even more special is that it was guided around art parties. For those of you who are un-aware of what an art party is, it is a choice based time filled with centers that are earned through positive behaviors/ef-forts. This very special art day involved both Make & Take and Design & Create centers. If you talk to students, you will find out that an art party is a pretty big deal and they LOVE them!! This year, so many lovely artists gave up that time and dedicated it to painting ornaments that they knew they would not keep. To me, that is another wonderful and true exhibit of the kind and caring personalities of our children here at GVCS!
