Kindergarten News
This month in Superkids we are beginning to read stories with words in them. Your child uses the strategy of say-
ing each letter sound and pushing the sounds together to read the word. We also learned how to write and identify
two new letters and their corresponding sounds. The first letter we learned about was uppercase and lowercase
Dd when we met the Superkid Doc. Doc is a nickname short for doctor because she loves to fix broken toys. She
taught us the how to read and write words that begin and end with the /d/ sound. Next we learned how to write
uppercase and lowercase Ss when we met the Superkid Sal. Sal loves participating in sports; especially winter
sports. He taught us about the /s/ sound and how to find words that begin and end with the sound /s/. This month
in math we are working on identifying and writing numbers 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. We continued to practice our addi-
tion and subtraction skills but this time through addition and subtraction stories. We ended the month by finding
and identifying different groups of numbers.

First Grade News
First Graders have settled nicely into academic routines. Each unit in Superkids, students have
memory and pattern words to study and prepare for an end of the unit test. These words can be
found using the Superkids on-line parent portal or in your child's reading bag. When we have stories
for your child to read, please have them answer questions about a story such as character, setting,
problem and solution. You can also ask them to verbally retell the story using first next and last. In
writing we use this same sequencing process by having them craft their stories using first, next, last
or beginning, middle, end. Remember to return book bags with your child the next day. As the
weather gets colder please be sure your child has a hat and mittens in their backpack each day as we
will be going outside every recess. Cold weather also brings chapped lips. We encourage you to have
a chap stick in your child's backpack should they need it.
Second Grade News
We have had a great start to November in second grade! In reading we have been learning the different word pat-
terns we use when we add different endings to words such as “ing” and “er.” We have also learned about making
words plural. The second graders have enjoyed reading about the Superkids’ adventures daily as well! In writing
we wrote a persuasive piece of writing about whether a spider would make a good pet. The second graders had
great opinions and did a great job giving reasons to support their opinions! In math we have begun learning about
place value including how to write numbers in expanded form, word form, and with quick tens and ones. The sec-
ond graders were very excited to play in the snow during recess last week! Please remember to bring snow pants
and boots so everyone can enjoy the winter recess activities!

Third Grade News
Hello third grade families! This month your child has begun learning many new things. For instance, we have be-
gun multiplication in math and are learning about our community in social studies. In writing we are learning
about using descriptive words in our writing.
Please remember that your child goes outside for recess unless it is below zero degrees. Your child should come
to school everyday wearing a winter jacket, snowpants, boots, hat and mittens. If you need assistance in provid-
ing these items, please let Ms. Jandrt or Ms. Stotmeister know and we will be happy to help. On Thursday, No-
vember 29th your child will be going to the school forest! Please start finding warm clothes!

Fourth Grade News
Hello 4th Grade Families! It is hard to believe that the first quarter is already over! In 4th grade we
are still busy still learning the daily expectations of being a respectful, responsible, and safe student
at Grant Elementary. Starting in 4th grade, we start to practice taking notes in class to practice for
middle school. Students are busy learning about reading comprehension skills like summarizing and
finding the main idea in a non-fiction text. Please continue to have your child read 20 minutes each
night at home and complete his/her fluency passage if it is sent home. In math we are working on
adding and subtracting whole numbers up to five digits. Keep practicing those quick math fact skills
at home! In spelling we are learning morphograph rules that students can apply when adding end-
ings to words. Finally, in social studies we are continuing to study the northeast region, learning
about the climate, people, and resources in that area. As always, please let us know of any questions
or concerns that may arise.
~Mrs. Witter, Mrs. Cunningham, & Mrs. McGrath
Fifth Grade News
First quarter has flown by and 5th graders have been very busy with their learning. This quarter in
writing the students have been learning how to write a compare/contrast paper and will be turning
their final writing piece into an Adobe video that will be posted on SeeSaw. In math we have moved
into our work with long division. Division is so much easier when you know your basic facts. If
your student struggles with basic multiplication facts, please practice at home. In social studies we
are moving into the discussion of the settlement of North America and the exploration of our
world. Please remember to check and sign your child's assignment notebook and purple folder each
night as there is often important information in them.

Library News
All of the classes, even kindergarten, have started to learn about digital citizenship, which is how we
can all behave respectfully, be responsible, and safe using any digital device that we may be us-
ing. Kindergarten students can now check out two books and we are working on what a good book for
them looks like. Third, fourth, and fifth graders are going to be taking a technology survey during li-
brary time. Next month all classes will do a bit of coding with the hour of code.

Art News
The Grant Artists have been working really hard on creating beautiful works of Art. 5th
grade just wrapped up learning about surrealism and will now be learning about linear per-
spective and the artist Peter Max. 4th grade just completed their logo self-portraits inspired
by the work of contemporary graphic designer Aaron Draplin and are launching into a new
project exploring symmetry and drawing from observation. 3rd grade recently finished
their pointillism planets and are now learning about and creating artwork inspired by Wis-
consin's own Georgia O'Keeffe. 2nd grade just finished a project where they learned about
leaves, about the power of drawing form observation, and about warm and cool colors. They
will be moving on to a project inspired by the amazing contemporary artists Romero Brito.
1st grade learned all about creating sculptures with their minions (which will be making
their way home) and are going to be doing their first clay project! Kindergarten has been
learning all about the most important colors, the primary colors (red, yellow, and blue), and
are now going to be learning about the secondary colors (orange, green, and purple/violet)
which are created by mixing the primary colors. You can come and check out these beauti-
ful works of art in the hallway. If you'd like to be a part of hanging up new artwork through-
out the year, or helping document kindergarten and 1st grade art, I am always looking for
volunteers to help in the art room.

PBIS
In October of 2018 there were a total of 198 Behavior Tracking Forms submitted by teachers, com-
pared to 215 Behavior Tracking Forms that were submitted in October 2017. As our students contin-
ue to learn and practice respectful, responsible and safe behaviors, we have experienced a decrease
in behaviors by 8% from last school year. The classroom continues to be where most challenging be-
haviors occur.
