Brother Knights,

As Hurricane Harvey made its way toward the Texas Coast, it was very important that we prepared ourselves and our families for what was about to come. We stocked up on supplies, filled the car with gas, prepared the house and mapped out a plan on where to go in case of an evacuation.

So how do we prepare ourselves for the Storms of Life? The periods of trials and suffering that we encounter.

It is also very important to prepare our minds and hearts for the trials of life.

Prepare yourself by developing a good strong foundation in our faith.

Study. Seek what the Bible teaches us about trials and suffering. Why do they ex-ist? How should we respond? How does God use suffering in our life?

Faith. Believe that God is in absolute control over everything that happens. Do we trust that he will use all things, even our suffering, for our good and his glory?

Pray. Develop an active prayer life. During the seasons of life, grow in prayer and learn to turn to God for all things. Don’t just ask God to fix everything. Ask that he come into our boat to help us and others.

Hurricane Harvey left a path of destruction and affected many lives and now WE must go out and do the good works of our order to help others to see the goodness of God.

God Bless.

Dennis Henderson KC chaplain report August 2017

Read these two scriptures first:

1 Kings 19:11-13, Matthew 14; 22-33

Brother Knights, Listen to these words again from our first reading. “After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound.” God comes to Elijah like this to make a point to the fiery prophet. God is not in the mighty wind, the earthquake or the fire but rather in the gentle whisper of the breeze. God in his own way without great fanfare will work his will for Israel. The message for us is that the clutter in our lives is the enemy of peace that fights for the space where that whispering sound seeks to conform our will to God’s.

Who is this God so close but I do not listen to Him? Why is this so? De-cluttering is easy to say, but hard to do. Clutter attacks at every turn; paper, traffic, cell phones, things to do…yada...yada…yada, we all face it. Yet, bringing order to these things gives me freedom from stuff weighing me down. Order comes from answering one simple question. Do I want peace or clutter? It seems reasonable to answer peace and life but we are weighed down by stuff.

Now, to separate our thinking from the clutter, we can turn off the cell phone, turn off the TV, and spend some quiet time with Scripture or just being with God. Then we can realize that God surrounds us more closely than the air we breathe. It seems obvious that de-cluttering our lives can bring a freedom to enjoy this peace.

Jesus provides this means to de-clutter my life, simply asking Him to guide my life. Fo-cused on this, our minds can listen, freely bowing to the One who brings peace. Listen to the gospel again, the wind is howling. Peter is with Jesus in the water. "After they got into the boat, the wind died down.” When Jesus gets into our boat that is being tossed around, peace has the upper hand over clutter and we can rest easy. Brother Knights, God is wait-ing for our answer.

A Whispering Sound

PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN

We should make it a habit to pray daily for the

lives of the unborn. Here is a very short and

easy to remember prayer by Archbishop Ful-

I l o v e y o u v e r y m u c h .

I beg you to spare the life of the un-

that I have spiritually adopted, who is

in danger of abortion. Amen.

Council Emergency Coordination Report

Brothers,

At our last business meeting, I reported we had over 300 Brothers affected by Hurricane Harvey. Father Roach Council 3217 in Dickinson, TX was one of the hardest hit. Over 100 brothers in that council were impacted by Harvey. In the Archdiocese there were 68 parishes, schools and Archdiocesan locations that reported damage by Harvey. Of those parish and schools, four sites sustained damage categorized as “catastrophic”: Shrine of the True Cross Parish and School (Dickinson), St. Francis of Assisi Parish and School (Houston), St. Ignatius Loyola Parish (Spring) and St. Phillip the Apostle Parish (Huffman). Each site experienced several feet of water in each building on campus. Please keep these parishioners in your prayers as they rebuild their community. At St. Laurence we had two brothers affected by Harvey. Both brothers will be receiving assistance from the State Charities Disaster Relief fund. However, sadly one Brother from another council was overwhelmed by damage caused by Harvey and took his own life. This is the reason we must pray for those who must carry the burden of loss and recovery long after a disaster has left its damage.

In the recovery and relief efforts locally, several brothers helped:

Habitat Cleanup - Brothers Steve Petitjean and John Heinemann helped to coordinate council volun-teers with St. Laurence Habitat Ministry to clear out homes that got flooded in the Richmond area.

Fed Harvey Relief Volunteers - Our council fed Harvey relief volunteers with BBQ chopped beef sand-wiches at the Ave Maria Center on Sept 6th.

Mamie George Fair – Knights cooked and served lunch in support of Harvey Relief efforts. St. Laurence Harvey Relief Food Fair – Knights hosted, cooked and served hamburgers, hot dogs,

beans, chips and drinks for all parishioners to raise donations for Harvey Relief efforts. Red Cross Shelter Relief Volunteers – Knights served breakfast with our sister Council 7445 (Sacred

Heart) in Richmond for Red Cross evacuees. We also served lunch at George Junior High School in Rosenberg.

Some of the comments I heard by those receiving relief were “Thank God for the Knights of Columbus!”. Brothers I can’t begin to share how overwhelming it was to hear those words. The spirit of Charity, Unity and Fraternity has been the force that guides us to serve in the name of Christ. Diligently pray for those im-pacted by Harvey and other disasters.

Continue bringing joy and hope to those in need..

Virtus Workshops in October

This notice is especially for our newest members in our council. As Knights, we are called to serve in many different capacities for our parish. In some cases, this puts us in proximity to children. As defenders of the faith we are called to be defenders to the most vulnerable, our children. The VIRTUS workshops raise aware-ness and training on how we as volunteers are to be vigilant against inappropriate behaviors when children are present. The Diocese and State Council strongly require that all Brother Knights complete this training.

The next training near Sugar Land is at St. Thomas Aquinas on Oct 19th and Oct 28th. Check our website for details. Seats are limited but still available. Register today at www.virtusonline.org!

Fourth Degree Exemplification – Spring

If you are interested in becoming a Fourth degree Knight early next year and have completed a Major degree, I have the application forms. If you have questions about possibly joining, please see me so we can discuss the new changes in the dress uniform starting next year.

Texas Knights Sweepstakes Fundraiser (Football Frenzy)

Thanks to all brothers that purchased a ticket for this year’s Football Frenzy. We sold all 25 tickets successful-ly last month.

GH Knights Chapter Website

We now have 38 members of our council registered on www.ghknights.org. Our council has the highest reg-istered membership in the chapter but we have yet to reach our 50 member goal! The website publishes all Chapter related activities to all councils in Galveston-Houston. You can find info on the exemplification schedule, VA visit schedule, prayer requests and other KC events from neighboring councils. Important news will be shared on KC Mardi Gras Party, State Convention and Clergy Night. Please register if you are a new member.

State Convention Volunteers

The next KC State Convention will be held in Houston on April 27 -29th at the Hilton Americas. We will need many volunteers to help. If you are interested in helping to plan this exciting event, the planning committees meet at Council 3077 KC Hall 420 Telephone Road, Houston, TX 77023, (713) 923-6767 on the Fourth Tues-day of each month at 7 p.m.
