REPORT OF GRAND MASTER
CHARLES A DURHAM
September 17, 2019, A. Dep. 3019
Reflections of my year
My companions;
Another cryptic year is nearly complete and we look forward to
the renewing and reloading of another enthusiastic group of
forward-thinking individuals, capable of reversing the trends
and breathing new life into our York Rite bodies. One thing is
certain, we can work, travel, spin, stress, etc. and we’re not
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
13
guaranteed immediate or complete success. One sure thing is
visible, if we do not do at least some of these things, we are
guaranteed to succeed at failure.
At the beginning of my year, I focused on three areas as needful
to help reverse the trends that I could see with my limited field
of view; commitment, proficiency and pride.
1. Commitment - I was then and am now, convinced that
Kentucky cryptic masonry as some of the best of the
best ritualist to be found anywhere. In traveling across
the state, I find that most every Council has some
outstanding companions who can recite our opening,
deliver a part, and teach a lecture or portrayal on par
with anyone in the ranks of masonry. But in many
instances, some such gifted individuals rarely make
the effort to attend the monthly meeting because others
have to read their parks, unwilling to learn to do the
work proficiently. So, the attitude can become “why
should I give of my time, why should I care or who
cares” imagine the impression we would make on new
members, attending for one of the first times and you
have a stack of red, purple and black rituals on your
station desk. What does it say about my commitment?
But I just cannot remember like I used to! We’ve all
heard that! And the excuses.
2. Proficiency - I have attempted to grow proficiency in
several ways! By leading when the situation called for it; by
giving the opportunity to when the setting presented itself; by
pushing when things were right for growth. And in other ways,
with each wave being met with limited success; some more than
others. I crafted a new “proficiency certificate” to be coupled
with a card of proficiency and additional lapel pins to reflect
individual accomplishment. Thus far into my year I have had
18 Companions statewide to turn in their requirements to either
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
14
myself, my Arch Deputies, previous grand Council officers or
in open meetings. The list continues to grow, even as we
approach our grand sessions. Some of these companions are
now doing great preliminary openings and closings as newly
instilled confidence is bearing fruit. I believe follow-up degree
work is becoming more of the expected norm and am seeing
important gains and work across the state, especially in places
where said work has been so slow to take hold. Evidently the
certificates, cards and pins are proving helpful for thus far, not
one companion has refused or returned one to me. Receiving
recognition thus far are:

2. Joe Grantham Owensboro Council number 34

Congratulations to all who made the effort! And will continue
to work.
2. Pride - not only in York Rite masonry, but in masonry
in general. That recent thought started with Most
Worshipful past Grand Master Tim Sanders and was
continued by current Most Worshipful Grand Master
Gary Rose. Both grandmasters allowed York Rite,
Scottish Rite and other independent bodies to have
some time in the district meetings to speak about their
particular craft and it has proved to add additional
brothers, companions and Sir Knights across the
Commonwealth. Pictures are being published about
work shared in Lodges. Matching uniforms and
colorful jackets are being used to add emphasis to our
monthly meetings. I believe that Most Excellent Grand
High Priest Ron Ledford and Right Eminent grand
Cmdr. Bill Riggs would agree that we are seeing a
renewal or new measure of pride in our respective
bodies. The recent work shared is evidence that extra
efforts are proving successful. Keep up the good work
Brothers, Companions and Sir Knights!

joined with their state companions and myself with the
companions of Kentucky to conferred the Royal, select and
super excellent master degrees. We had 18 new super excellent
master’s complete their cryptic work, with 12 being from
Kentucky. Our appreciation to both grandmasters for their
cooperation and helpfulness throughout that meeting and the
year along with our traveling Kentuckians, especially my line
officers as all participate in the Royal master degree. One other
note, the Royal order of Zandibar meeting was worth the price
of admission this year as our emphasis was on the C.M.M.R.F.
well done Indiana!
Upcoming year
As my year closes, I want to express my thanks to the line
officers who have gone above and beyond all that I could have
expected: to Noel - the heartbeat of our York Rite bodies; to my
committees; to my traveling companions; and to the craft, for
their gracious reception across the state; to my successor Tom
Bustle, who I expect to far exceed my efforts; to Missy, who
has constantly kept me Road ready; and above all, to our
heavenly father for safe travels and health to keep going.
Fraternally,
Charles A Durham, MIGM 2018-19

was born October 29, 1940 at Crofton in Christian County,
Kentucky, the oldest of four sons born to Herbert Gordon
Durham and Ola Belle Smith Durham. Charles married Helen
Yvonne Barnes on July 27, 1956, and they became the parents
of three daughters, Pamelia Jo Durham (Jimmy) Beadnell,
Karen Denise Durham (Daniel) Hyravy, and Tammy Yvonne
Durham Dukes (Todd) Ford. Helen succumbed to a heart attack
following lung cancer surgery in February, 2005. Pam died in
2006, also from a heart attack.
Charles and his family moved from Crofton to
Greenville for an employment opportunity in mining in 1967.
For the next 28 years, he was a heavy equipment welder and
mechanic at Peabody Coal Company’s River Queen Mine. He
also served two plus terms as Chairman of the Safety
Committee and for almost ten years, he was Financial Secretary
for Local Union 1178, UMWA.
Most Illustrious Companion Durham has been an
active member of the East Union Missionary Baptist Church in
Graham, Kentucky since 1972. He was ordained a deacon in
1982, has taught Sunday school for over 40 years, and served
as church clerk and historian for more than 27 years.
At a church singing in 2006, Charles met Mrs. Wanda
L. Woodall Wright, a widow, and they began a courtship that
resulted in their marriage in July, 2007. Wanda has two
daughters, Karen Renee Wright (Jeff) Greenwood and Paula
Ann Wright (Kevin) Bruce. Charles and Wanda have nine
grandchildren and four great grandchildren together.
Charles began his Masonic journey in 1980, when he
received the three degrees of Ancient Craft Freemasonry in
Pond River Lodge No. 144, F. & A. M. in Greenville, Kentucky.
He served as Master there in 1984, was District Deputy Grand
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
19
Master in 1986-1987 and was appointed an Ambassador for the
Masonic Homes of Kentucky in 2010-2012.
He was initiated into York Rite Masonry in the
Madisonville bodies in 1982. His work prevented regular
attendance, and a severe back injury from a fall ended his
working career. A partial recovery allowed him to become
more active in the York Rite, and he has since progressed
through the chairs in all three bodies and currently holds the
office of Treasurer.
A partial list of the Masonic honors, offices, and orders he
has received include:
• Knight of the York Cross of Honor, Kentucky Priory
No. 25
• Kentucky York Rite Mason of the Year, 2014
• Order of High Priesthood; Order of the Silver Trowel;
Order of Ish-Sodi; Order of the Secret Vault
• 2nd Arch Deputy Grand Master, 4 years
• West Kentucky York Rite College No. 157
• Rizpah Shrine Center (chaplain)
• Muhlenberg-McLean County Shrine Club (treasurer
and past president)
• West Kentucky Past Masters’ Society
• AMD Council No. 461
• Red Cross of Constantine
• Scottish Rite, Valley of Madisonville (KCCH-2019)
Most Illustrious Companion Durham entered the line of the
Grand Council of Kentucky in 2015 with his election as Grand
Captain of the Guard. In the years that have followed, he has
served with distinction in each of the offices leading to the
Grand East as Most Illustrious Grand Master.

Grand Recorder King and his Secretary, Noel,
continue to do an outstanding job of managing our income and
expense reporting. Noel now has more than six years’
experience with us and her attention to detail is excellent.
The Grand Officers, members and Finance Committee have all
worked to improve the finances of the Grand Council. The
Grand Council cannot be considered to be flush with funds, but
current expenses can now be paid from current receipts.
Part of our improved position is the reduction in
expense we’ve enjoyed for the Grand Sessions. Opening the
joint account for expenses which are common to Chapter,
Council, and Commandery six years ago has enabled us to have
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
30
a more accurate distribution of these expenses, as opposed to
the former way in which we used a percentage for each body.
Expenses are more than $11,000 under budget, though
we had included removing money from the Permanent Fund in
this year’s budget, no money was needed,
Any questions may be directed to me.
Zealously submitted,
J. B. Hitt, II Grand Treasurer

REPORT OF THE CHIEF ARCH DEPUTY September 17, 2019 A.D. 3019 A. DEP.
TO: Most Illustrious Grand Master, Right Illustrious Grand
Officers, Illustrious Grand Officers, Companions All:
I will start by thanking MIGM Charles Durham for allowing
me to serve him and this Grand Council again this year.
I also thank our Grand Arch Deputies for their diligence in
performing their duties and for the assistance and
encouragement they gave the Councils in their Arches.
Congratulations to the Councils for their efforts in conferring
degrees, learning ritual, and preparing for their inspections.
Many of the Councils improved on their scores this year.
There were several striving to help improve their Councils by
fulfilling their duties as Illustrious Master and earning
Illustrious Master Superior Service points. These points are
added to their inspection scores. Unfortunately, none of the
scores received were high enough to entitle an Illustrious
Master to receive the award this year.
I will make one remark on inspection consistency. In the
future, the inspection reports should be clarified at the Deputy
Masters meeting. Any questions concerning point
accumulations should be thoroughly explained.
The scores from inspections are as follows:

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Most Illustrious Past
Grand Masters, Elected and Appointed Grand Officers,
Distinguished Guests and Companions one and all:
CMMRF is blessed to have many constituent
councils and individuals who support our philanthropy. This
year we had a total of $22,443.30 in contributions. As a
reminder, I make my report starting on August 16th through
August 15th of the following year. I realize this series of dates
conflicts with the recordkeeping of our recorders. However,
this gives the best representation of how our philanthropy
performed during the MIGM’s year. As always, please
contact me if you have any discrepancies and I will diligently
work to resolve any issues.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve.

Report of the Necrology Committee
September 17, 2019, A. Dep. 3019
To the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Officers, and
Companions of the Grand Council of Kentucky, Royal and
Select Masters:
“In the midst of life we are in death,” we are taught both in the
rituals of Freemasonry and in the doctrines of our faith, but we
know that the Great Architect of the Universe “will show us the
path of life, and in his presence is the fullness of glory, and that
at his right hand there is pleasure for evermore.” Let each of us
remember in a moment of silence those _____ Companions of
the grand jurisdiction of Kentucky who have departed from the
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
50
circle of our fellowship. Let us also remember their families
and those closest to them in this life.
We are especially saddened by the passing of Most Illustrious
Companion John D. Jacobs, who died March 28, 2019, and who
served the Grand Council as its Most Illustrious Grand Master
in 2001-2002.
We share in the loss of the Grand Chapter of Kentucky, Royal
Arch Masons in the death on March 1, 2019 of Most Excellent
Companion Norman Lee Harper, Past Grand High Priest, who
served the Grand Chapter as its presiding officer in 1973-74 as
well as the passing on March 14, 2019 of Most Excellent
Companion Ernest Eugene Atkins, Past Grand High Priest, who
served in that office in 2003-04.
We mourn with the Grand Commandery of Knights Templar of
Kentucky in the death of Sir Knight Donald Hinslea Smith, Past
Grand Commander (1974-75) on February 27, 2019. Sir Knight
Smith also served as Most Eminent Grand Master of the Grand
Encampment of Knights Templar of the United States of
America from 1985 through 1988.
These to whom we pay special tribute this day are not forgotten,
neither by us in this moment, nor in eternity; for they rest in the
arms of the Eternal Father.
Let us pray: Remember these your servants, O Lord and grant
that they may go from strength to strength in the life of perfect
service in your heavenly kingdom. Bless them and keep them,
make your face to shine upon them, and be gracious unto them.
May you ever lift up your countenance upon them and give
them peace, both now and forevermore. Amen.

COMMITTEE ON GRAND COUNCIL HISTORY-
2019
A DIVIDED COUNTRY AND MASONIC UNITY
From 1861 to 1865 the War Between The States
raged with much loss of life, other casualties, and destruction
of property. Several states seceded from the union, which was
generally recognized that they had a right to do. The seceding
states formed another country, The Confederate States of
America. The Kentucky Legislature chose to remain in the
Union, but a Provisional Confederate Government was formed
in Kentucky and Kentucky was admitted into the Confederacy.
As would be expected among a group of individuals, there
were Masons who wanted to keep the Union intact, while
others wanted the preserve the rights of states as enumerated
in the Constitution of the United States.
During the war, all three governors of Kentucky were
Masons: Beriah Magoffin, James F. Robinson, and Thomas E.
Bramlette. The Provisional Confederate Government of
Kentucky elected George W. Johnson, also a Mason, as
governor.
When Simon Cameron, Secretary of War in the
Lincoln administration called for four regiments of militia
from Kentucky, Governor Magoffin replied: Your dispatch is
reviewed. In answer, I say, emphatically, Kentucky will
furnish no troops for the wicked purpose of subduing her sister
Southern States. Although there was a fairly strong sentiment
for Kentucky to remain in the Union, after Abraham Lincoln
sent troops to invade the South, many Kentuckians joined the
Confederate Army to defend their homes and those of their
neighbors. Thus, there were Kentuckians on each side,
including Masons.
Many incidents showing Masonry in action during
the war have been written about. One such incident was told
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
52
the writer many years ago by Brother William Owens of St.
Andrew’s Lodge, No. 18, and a former member of McKee
Lodge, No. 144. The incident apparently involved two
members of McKee Lodge, No. 144—Johnny McKee and
Judge Brown—and it is not known which army connection
each had; one was a Confederate soldier and the other was in
the Union army. These soldiers had been captured and were
prisoners of war. The officers on one side decided to release
their prisoner. The brother offered freedom declined the offer
unless his brother Mason on the other side was released. How
communication was effected between the two sides is
unknown, but the end result was that both soldiers were
released. The writer attempted to find further details, but has
been unsuccessful.
If the Grand Council met during the war years, the
record is not found; labors were resumed in 1865.

REPORT OF TECHNOLOGY COMMITTEE

To the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Officers, and
Companions of the Grand Council of Kentucky, Royal and
Select Masters:
First off let us thank you for the faith shown in us to
pick us for this committee. We hope that we did the craft proud
in our endeavors.
This year we tried to make some improvements of how
our KYRIS website. Randall, George, Noel and myself were
made aware so some errors in the reporting section, have been
looking at errors and Randall has fixed some of those problems.
The ideal of being able to do Annual Reports via the
website came up this year. We are happy to report that Randall
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
53
made that happen for us. The Council Recorders across the state
can now do pretty much all of their reporting to us on KYRIS
not only keep an up to date membership but keep records of
Minsters, 50-year members, degrees, and Past Illustrious
Master. If the Recorders will make use of this tool the records
will be much more accurate and easier to keep up.
We continue to look for ways to improve on not only
the data base but also www.yorkriteky.org and our Facebook
page. Noel tries to put as much information as she can online so
that everyone is aware of what is going on across the state.
Thank you again for the opportunity to serve.

Officers, Committee Members, Ladies, Guest.
First, I want to thank my wife Lady Sally who stood
by me, and assisted me while I have been blessed to serve in
two Grand York Rite Lines. She has spent a lot of nights at
home taking care of our home so I could travel and serve the
craft. She has also been a traveling companion on a lot of out of
state visits. Sally I Love you and I could not have done this
without your support and help.
I also want to thank all of the Companions whose
leadership and love for this great fraternity has made this
journey possible for me. The miles we have traveled and
conversations has made a big impact on my life.
Companions thank you for having the confidence in
me and allowing me the honor of serving you as Most
Illustrious Master.
Here are a few things I would like for us focus on this
year
In Cryptic Masonry it has been and always will be our
job to preserve the true word of a Master Mason. So, the word
can be passed down to future generations.
2019 PROCEEDINGS OF GRAND COUNCIL OF KENTUCKY
62
I want each Council to work and improve on our
openings & closings, and our degree work. I have instructed the
Arch Deputy’s to assist in this endeavor. This will help us to
keep our commitment to preserve the word, so future masons
who have been found worthy will be able to continue receiving
the true word.
I ask each of us to continue supporting the York Rite
Journey program that REPGC Bill Riggs started last year. We
have seen results with this program and its working and
befitting all of your York Rite Bodies.
Please continue supporting Cryptic Mason Medical
Research (CMMRF). Your donations is funding
research that is making a difference in lives
everywhere.
Companions again thank you and have
safe travels and I will see you down the road.
