Grand Lodge Educational Webinar

Grand Master’s MessageMy Brothers, Cold weather is now upon us as Father Time has relinquished 2018 to the Baby New Year of 2019. I trust that you had a wonderful holiday season and are looking forward to a prosperous 2019. After speaking to all of our District Deputies, I am pleased to report that Kentucky Free-masonry closed out 2018 in fine fashion, with lodges addressing the needs of their members, widows, local charities and communities at large. Brothers, you are representing Kentucky Freemasonry as a dedicated group of men who care deeply about their faith, family and com-munities, and I am proud of you for doing so.

As I think back to the winters of my youth, there were always farm chores to be done such as making sure our farm animals had enough food, water and shelter to make it through the winter. We also had to have a good amount of coal and wood for the heating and cook stoves. We had warm clothing and canned goods, prepared from the garden, in the cellar. Even though it was cold, I went to a one room school, named Amyx, grades 1-3 then to a 4 room school called Hazel Green Public School, grades 4-6, where my classmates and I learned the three R’s of reading, riting and rithmetic. I learned lessons in that one room school that carried me through my entire adult life. Education was important then and is even more so today. I encourage you to take an interest in your children’s and/or grandchildren’s education since a good education, once gained, can never be taken from you. For further Masonic Education, I ask you to attend the Masonic Education Webinar this year which will be on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Your District Deputy will have more information on this educational training.

Part of our duties as Masons is to do the very best we can do with opening and closing our lodges and with proficient degree work. I have confidence that you will give your very best effort to ensure that the Masonic work is the best it can be. This is a new year with many new officers and new programs. I encourage you to evaluate the Grand Lodge Programs and do your best. Brothers, please check on your members who have not been to lodge in a while and encourage them to attend and see if your Masonic Widows need any help. My brothers, make a positive difference in your life and the lives of others and let no one say that the Masons just “marked time.”

Do good unto all,Fraternally Thine,

Gary C. RoseGrand Master of Masons, Grand Lodge of Kentucky F.& A.M.

William O. Ware Lodge of Research Names Initial Research Fellows William O. Ware Lodge of Research has named its initial class of William O. Ware Research Fellows. Honored for creating a lasting body of work over a period of years, the initial class consists of Bro. Edwin L. Vardiman (Golden Rule-Covington Lodge No. 109), William J. Lorenz (Henry Barnes Lodge No. 607) and John W. Bizzack (Lexington Lodge No. 1).

William O. Ware Lodge of Research

Worshipful Bro. Vardiman is a Past Master of Golden Rule-Covington Lodge No. 109, a Past Master of the Lodge of Research (1989-90) and a former member of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky’s Trial Oversight Committee. He has extensively researched the history and philosophy of Freemasonry and has written and presented many papers on sub-jects of great interest to the Craft. A longtime member of the Lodge of Research, Bro. Vardiman has generously shared his knowledge of Masonry to the benefit of all.

Worshipful Bro. Bill Lorenz is a Past Master of Henry Barnes Lodge No. 607, a Past Master of the Lodge of Research (2017-2018) and has served on several Committees for the Grand Lodge of Kentucky. Bro. Lorenz has for many years researched and explored the origins and forms of the Masonic Ritual. His knowledge of the history and evolution of the Ritual has been demonstrated on numerous occasions, much to the edification of the Craft.

Worshipful Bro. John Bizzack was elected and installed as Master of Lexington Lodge No. 1 for the year 2018. The author of six books on Freemasonry, including the highly acclaimed Island Freemason-ry, Bro. Bizzack is a frequent speaker at national symposiums and seminars. A founding member of The Rubicon Masonic Society, Bro. Bizzack also played a key role in the origination and planning of the “Sowing Seeds of Freemasonry” seminars presented in Kentucky in 2018.

Each of these distinguished Brothers is to be commended for their en-during contributions to the body of Masonic knowledge and for their devotion to the Fraternity and the Craft. They have demonstrated their worthiness to sustain the legacy of the late Masonic Scholar and our noted Brother, M. W. P. G. M. William O. Ware, for whom our Lodge of Research was so aptly named. For more information visit www.williamowarelodgeofresearch.com.

Wm. O Ware Lodge to Hold Panel Discussion

M.W. Brother, William O. Ware was installed Grand Master of Kentucky in October, 1957. He then posed three questions to the Craft:

1. What is Freemasonry? 2. What does Freemasonry mean to me? 3. What do I mean to Freemasonry?

A ‘panel discussion’ on the above thought provoking subjects will take place on Wednesday, January 30,

at M.W. Brother Ware’s namesake Lodge of Research, 1553 Madison Avenue, Covington, Kentucky

(Covington Scottish Rite Temple).

Panelists include: John D. Cissell, Grand Jr. Deacon; Eddie Hazelett, Past Master of Ted Adams Lodge of

Research; and Cameron Poe, Chairman of the Rubicon Masonic Society.

Audience participation is invited. Brother Tom Nitschke, Sr. Warden,

will serve as moderator for the event.

Dinner will be served at 6:15 PM with the program to follow.

Proper attire is required. Dinner is $ 10.00 per person. For reservations, please contact Lodge Master

RESOLVE RESOLUTELY!One of the most inspiring and motivational occurrences in life is the ending of one year and the beginning of the next, bringing a sense of both reflection and renewal at one and the same time.

As we close out 2018 and look forward to 2019 we have another opportunity to reflect and renew. It’s an age-old joke that making resolutions seldom bears fruit, that resolutions are broken almost as soon as they are made. It seems that we need to add some “resolve” to our resolutions! In other words, we need to make up our minds, and perhaps our hearts as well, that we really want to do something, that’s it’s not merely words, but an inspired course of action.

So, my brothers, with that backdrop may I offer a suggestion for a group resolution, one that we as the Valley of Louis-

Valley of Louisville

Ancient & Accepted Scottish Rite - Orient of Kentucky

ville and Scottish Rite Masons can resolve to help one another keep throughout the new year? Let us resolve to be zealous, energetic and true brothers to one another, in thought, word and deed. Support our leadership – and may our leadership remember that good leaders facilitate and encourage the creativity, suggestions and activities of the membership.

Resolutions are meant to be inspiring and motivating, not burdensome. When we make our resolutions come to life in daily action with our broth-ers they will bear fruit in a prosperous and joyful New Year!

Fraternally and courteously thine,

Brothers, it’s very important for you to communicate with the valley secretary concerning your home address, e-mail address, phone numbers, lodge affiliation and member’s wife’s name, etc. The need to maintain our records is a very important part of our communication with the members. Should you have new information, please call the valley office-(859-277-7856)

The Spring Valley of Lexington Scottish Rite Reunion is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2019, starting at 7:00 a.m. for break-fast and registration. We am now accepting petitions for new applicants. The timeless lessons and philosophies exemplified by the Scottish Rite degrees are extremely valuable in today’s world. Brothers may gain a new perspective about freema-sonry by receiving the degrees and existing Scottish Rite Brothers will also benefit by renewing their vows at a Scottish Rite reunion.

I appreciate each member who pays his dues in a timely manner and thus keeps the activities of the valley moving forward. Come attend and take part in the activities and enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie that is always found at the Lexington Scottish Rite.

Brothers, I’ve had numerous inquiries concerning non-payment of dues. It seems the process is too often misunderstood. A Scottish Rite Mason having been suspended for non-payment of dues for a period of time greater than two years, may be reinstated by payment of current years dues (1 year) and petition for reinstatement and election at a stated meeting of the Scottish Rite.

If you are aware of a brother who was suspended for non-payment of dues two or more years ago and desires to be reinstated, share this informa-tion with him and your respective lodges.

“I Didn’t Know That……” Kentucky has three distinguished Masons that served as Secre-tary/General of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction. The first, Frederic Webber, was one of the original Kentucky Scot-tish Rite members. He was made a mason on his 21st birthday, and quickly became interested in both the lodge and the York Rite. He, along with eight others, petitioned the Supreme Council to receive the Scottish Rite degrees. Albert G. Macke, the great Masonic Historian, communicated the degrees on the group of Louisville Masons, on August 18, 1852, and three days later, set forth a Grand Consistory in Louisville. Fred Weber was Secretary of the Kentucky body. The Civil War put the Kentucky organiza-tion on the back burner, as Frederic enlisted in the Union Army. Albert Pike, soon after becoming Sovereign Grand Commander in 1859, conferred upon Webber the 33°, and in 1871 Fred Webber became Treasurer/General of the Supreme Council and then in 1886, Secretary/General, a position perhaps second in responsibility to the Sovereign Grand Commander. Fred Webber served the Supreme Council for 48 years, believed to be unmatched in the Southern Jurisdiction. Webber Lodge of Perfection (Louisville) and Fred Webber Council of Kadosh (Covington), both carry his name.

Perhaps the most widely known and certainly most distinguished Kentucky Mason of the 20th century was PGM John H. Cowles (1909-1910) who lived a remarkable life. He was involved in so many projects, both in Kentucky and the Masonic world, it is impos-sible to name them in this brief article. Among them was the forming of Kentucky Military Lodge #1; a Captain in the First Kentucky Volunteer Regiment; Editor of the Masonic Home Journal; a past presiding officer of his York Rite bodies; a past potentate of Kosair Shrine; a founder of the group that led to the erection of the George Washington Masonic Memorial; and SGIG in Kentucky for 45 years. Cowles strong business sense served him well. In 1911 he became the second Kentucky Mason to serve as Secretary/General of the Supreme Council, a position he held for ten years before becoming Sovereign Grand Commander of the Supreme Council, Southern Jurisdiction in 1921.

During his 31 year tenure as Sovereign Grand Commander, he traveled the world, reported on the condition of Masonry and recom-mended the ‘recognition’ of many Grand Lodges. He saw Hitler, along with Mussolini suppress Freemasonry. He continued to raise dollars for the relief effort. After the war, Cowles tried to re-establish Freemasonry where possible. He was personally responsible to having some Freemasons released from prisons. He is considered second only to Albert Pike, in Scottish Rite influence throughout the world. John Cowles never forgot his Kentucky roots, and continued his activity in the Grand Lodge when applicable. He made generous donations to the Grand Lodge of Kentucky and is remembered for the Cowles Benevolent Fund still used by the Grand Lodge to relieve the distressed. Cowles died June 18, 1954, and is buried in the House of the Temple close to Albert Pike.

The third Secretary/General of the Supreme Council from Kentucky was PGM John E. Moyers (1976-77) one of the most loved Past Grand Masters of recent years. John had an uncanny gift of never forgetting a name, and with his lovely wife Pauline, never met a stranger. They were always prominent in Masonic social circles, and always made sure to welcome everyone they met. John be-longed to all the appendant bodies, and promoted unity amongst them. He was an honorary Past Grand Commander of the Knights Templar, and was honored by our Masonic youth organizations. John held top State offices in the In the Red Cross of Constantine and the Royal Order of Scotland. In the Scottish Rite, John served Louisville Scottish Rite in various capacities, and became the Kentucky’s SGIG upon retirement of Brother George Effinger PGM. The Supreme Council appointed John, Grand Master of Cer-emonies, where his name recognition skills became prominent as he introduced distinguished Masons from all over the world. He was appointed Secretary/General on January 1, 2003, which he held until August 9, 2008.

John always put the Grand Lodge of Kentucky first above all things Masonic. It was he that as Grand Master began the Master Masons Dinner and is fitting that the 2018 dinner is now known as the John E. Moyers Master Mason Dinner. Loving remarks were made by friend and colleague Roland Stayton in commemoration of John E. Moyers’ life.

The Masonic Library has books on Frederick Weber and John Cowles as well as a copy of Roland Stayton’s loving tribute to John Moyers. You can visit your MLMA – Covington and receive a free library card, any any Wednesday, 6:00 to 8:00 pm or for an ap-pointment just email Bill Lorenz, Librarian: [email protected]
