The Alto Gállego region, located in the heart of the Pyrenees, in northern Huesca, stands out be-cause of its rich natural and cultural heritage.The region’s convenient location, along with its ex-cellent road network including the recent and very welcome opening of the Yebra-Fiscal road, make Alto Gállego an ideal base for exploring the Pyrenees.Visitors are often pleasantly surprised to discover the quality of the Alto Gállego landscape.The majority of the Alto Gállego region is part of the Network of Natural Areas and some locations, such as the Ordesa Viñamala Biosphere Reserve and Pyrenean Glaciers Natural Monument, have addi-tional protection. The region is also bordered by some very important protected natural areas within the Pyrenees, such as the Monte Perdido y Ordesa National Park, the Sie-rra y Los Cañones de Guara Nature Reserve and the Pyrenees National Park, which is in France. Connecting the numerous climbing huts is a network of well-maintained walking trails. All in all visitors are sure to have an enjoyable and safe stay in the Pyrenees, all year round.

Over the course of time civilisation has con-tributed to the beauty of the area through artistic endeavours such as the megalithic monuments, like Saint Elena’s Dolmens and the Ibirque Dolmen, or the Region’s fascinating vernacular architecture.Easily recognisable by the large houses that are built with roughly-hewn stone and have steep, slate roofs. These villages have also held onto a wealth of intan-gible heritage through their traditions, stories, place names and the Aragonese language.The Serrablo Churches were declared a Complex of Historical-Artistic Value in 1982. The churches date from the 10th and 11th Centuries. Some consider them to be in the Mozarab style, while others claim they are Romanesque-Lombardic. Either way they are unique within medieval art.Located in the centre of the Region, the following churches are particularly worthy of mention as they are in excellent condition and easy to get to: San Bar-tolomé de Gavín (Saint Bartholomew’s, Gavín), San Pedro de Lárrede (Saint Peter’s in Lárrede), San Juan de Busa (Saint John’s, Busa), Santa Eulalia de Orós Bajo (Saint Eulalia, Orós Bajo), San Martín de Oliván (Saint Martin, Oliván). Datées des X et XIe siècle, si elles relèvent de l’art mozarabe pour certains, de l’art roman lombard pour d’autres, leur style est considéré par tous comme unique pour l’époque médiévale.Situées au centre de notre comarque, celles de San Bartolomé de Gavín, San Pedro de Lárrede, San Juan de Busa, Santa Eulalia de Orós Bajo, San Martín de Oliván ou encore celle, insolite, de San Salvador de Basarán, qui fut démontée et déplacée pierre par pierre à Formigal, se distinguent par leur état de conservation et leur facilité d’accès.

Next to Alto Gállego, there are plenty of illustrative visits about our history. You will not overlook Jaca, the former capital of the Aragon kingdom, San Juan de la Peña monastery, example of the purest Romanesque, or the populations of Hecho and Ansó and Ainsa in medieval style, among others.Not far, France shows us a changing landscape pervaded with the French charm. Cities like Pau, a clear sample of the French architecture, the Lourdes sanctuary, Artouste with its “petit train”, or the “Betharram” caves. Museums, natural spaces and its wide grasslands offer numerous perspectives on the other side of the border.

Dans le Alto Gállego les visites illustratives sur notre histoire sont abondantes. Jaca, ancienne capitale du royaume d’Aragon, le monastère de San Juan de la Peña, exemple du plus pur art roman, ou les villages de Hecho et Ansó et le site historique et artistique d’Ainsa de style Médiéval, entre autres, ne nous laisserons pas indifférents.A peu de distance, la France nous fait découvrir un paysage changeant imprégné de tout le charme gallois. Both for their contents and the buildings that house them, the Museo Ángel Orensanz y Artes Populares de Serrablo and the Museo de Dibujo Ju-lio Gavín–Castillo de Larrés, are two hidden gems.You can also visit any one of the comprehensive net-work of interpretive centres around the Region.The young and the young at heart will have great fun at the theme parks in the Region: Lacuniacha, in Pie-drafita de Jaca, is a fun space; as you walk through the spectacular woods you can see animals in semi-wild conditions. And Biescas Aventura, in Arratiecho Park, has rope courses, walkways, ziplines, climbing walls and loads more activities to get the adrenaline pumping. Also, in Sabiñánigo you can visit the Jardín de Maquetas Pirenarium (Pirenarium Model Gar-den), where you can see the most iconic buildings of the Pyrenees in miniature.Some of the events held in the Region are now cal-endar favourites, such as the Festival Pirineos Sur on the floating stage in Lanuza, fairs like the one held in autumn in Biescas and traditional celebrations like the dancing and procession to Saint Orosia. There are also numerous exhibitions, concerts, local mar-kets and other activities. Everyone is guaranteed to have fun no matter what the time of year.

In winter, Formigal and Panticosa have the larg-est skiing area in Spain, with 176 kilometres of alpine skiing pistes distributed over six valleys.The border at El Portalet, which is close by, is the perfect location to go snowshoeing, where you can take to the snow under the watchful eye of the Midi d’Ossau or Peña Foratata mountaintops. The Espacio Nórdico at Balneario de Panticosa resort has 5.5 kilometres of marked, Nordic-skiing trails. As well as being an excellent starting point for a wide va-riety of cross-country skiing trails, on your return to the resort you can relax at the thermal circuit, known as the Tiberius Thermals.Our privileged location, together with the experi-enced professionals and the range of adventure tourism companies operating in the area means that visitors can enjoy many different types of adventure sports all year round, from the gentlest, such as fish-ing, or trekking Nordic walking in La Partacua, or horse riding, or canoeing and windsurfing from the Suscalar Embaradero jetty, and golf at Las Margas, climbing, canyoning, potholing and paragliding.

For road cycling enthusiasts there is the annual Gran Fondo Quebrantahuesos / Treparriscos. These are held at the end of June and welcome approx. 10,000 participants from all over the world.A more recent development is Espacio BTT Pirineos Alto Gállego. This MTB facility is being constantly improved and expanded. At present it has 26 routes covering more than 500 kilometres of trails, mainly paths and tracks. Espacio BTT also has three specially adapted areas for downhill biking and a bike park.The Region’s mountains and natural environment lend themselves to adventure sports such as tria-thlons and mountain running events. As well as races not to mention the spectacular Campeonato de España de Parapente Acrobático (Spanish Acro-batic Paragliding Championship) which takes place in Pueyo de Jaca.

Un réseau complet de centres d’interprétation complètent l’offre patrimoniale et muséale de l’Alto Gállego. Jeunes et moins jeunes s’en donneront à cœur joie dans les parques thématiques de la comarque : Lacu-niacha, à Piedrafita de Jaca, un espace animé où tout en profitant d’une agréable promenade en forêt l’on peut découvrir des animaux en semi-liberté, ou Bies-cas Aventura dans le Parc d’Arratiecho, où lianes, passerelles, tyroliennes, murs d’escalade et un grand nombre d’autres activités attendent les amateurs de sensations fortes.
