From the Headmaster’s Desk Staffing

It is with great pleasure that I announce the appointment of Mrs Simone Whalley to the position of Dean of Junior School, commencing at the beginning of next year.

Simone is a very experienced and skilled Junior School teacher, with significant experience managing teams of Junior School teachers. She was the Assistant Principal in charge of the Junior School at Mairehau Primary School before taking maternity leave. At the end of this leave she returned to Mairehau as a Year 1 classroom teacher. The appointee has very big shoes to fill and we are fortunate to have such an experienced and capable person stepping into this role.

Simone is married to a Police Dog Handler and has 2 children, aged 2 and 7. She will spend several days before the end of the year working alongside Carole to ensure a smooth handover and I hope to introduce her at a Junior School Assembly before the end of the year.

I look forward to welcoming Simone to our school family.

Parent Survey

Tomorrow (Wednesday) you will all receive an email with a link to our annual Parent Survey. This year’s survey concentrates on some of the things that have been the focus for the school over the past 12 months, including Sport, Parent Engagement and Teaching and Learning.

I ask that as many of you as possible complete the survey. Your views are very important in reviewing how we have done in 2014 and in setting our goals for 2015.

This Week

The remainder of this week is extremely busy, with BOSS Fair, Mufti Day and the Friends’ School Discos tomorrow. Please note the following;

There is no theme for the mufti day. Children can wear any appropriate mufti.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is looking dodgy. If the weather is bad, the BOSS Fair may be postponed to a later date. If this happens, the day will still be a mufti day and we will still be serving the pre-ordered sausages for lunch, so no need to rush around in the morning changing what children will wear or arranging a lunch ‘just in case’.

From the Headmaster’s Desk (Cont.)

For safety reasons, any student attending the School Disco will not be able to leave the hall once they arrive until they are picked up by parents. Parents must come to the door to uplift their child.

If any student is bringing a mobile phone with them to the Disco, and we strongly suggest they do not, the school takes no responsibility for its safety, unless the phone is handed to a staff member for safe keeping (I will be there for all 3 disco’s and will be happy to be the custodian of any phones).

A reminder also that the school is closed for Show Weekend on Thursday and Friday of this week.

Dogs at School

Parents often arrive to pick up children with their dogs in tow. This creates issues for those children in the school who are either afraid of dogs or have allergies. As a result, with the exception of the Junior School Dog Show, I want to remind the school community that dogs are not permitted on the school grounds before, during and after school.

If you are bringing a dog with you to pick up or drop off your children, please keep them on a lead and remain on the road (Chester St West).

Finally…

I hope you all enjoy the long weekend. The year is disappearing fast and there seems to be a lot to do before our final event for the year, Prizegiving on Friday 12 December. Hopefully the long weekend will allow you all to take a breath before the busyness of the end of year engulfs us all!

Creating Moral Citizens - Virtue of the Week is: Detachment

What is Detachment?

Detachment is experiencing your feelings

without allowing your feelings to control you.

It is choosing how you will act in a situation

rather than just reacting. With detachment

you are free to do only what you choose to do.

Detachment is using thinking and feeling

together, so you can make smart choices.

Congratulations! You are practising Detachment when you…

Take time out before doing something you

would be sorry for

Look at your feelings before deciding how

to act

Use thinking and feeling together

Act instead of react

Reflect before taking action

Choose to do what is right

General Notices BOSS Fair & Mufti-Day & TRACKSUITS!

Year 8 have preparations well underway for the fair tomorrow, the proceeds from which will be donated to charities nominated by the Houses. Pupils should bring only modest amounts of pocket money to spend at the fair! A gold coin donated is the price for wearing mufti (no theme.)

The weather is not entirely looking cooperative but, because of all the food preparations, we intend to hold the fair if at all possible. The benefit of the school tracksuit is that it has drizzle–repelling and windproof qualities. Please ensure that your child has their full tracksuit in school tomorrow so that they can participate fully.

Get your Groove On!?!

The annual Friends’ Association School Discos are tomorrow too!

3.30 – 4.30pm Junior School Disco (Y1-3);

5.00 – 6.30pm Prep School Disco (Y4 - 6); and

7.00 – 9.00pm Senior School Disco (Y7-8).

Please be prompt in collecting your child at the appropriate time.

Lucky Book pamphlets have been put in the children’s lockers today. They need to be returned by November 18.

A reminder that we are going to Arion Farm next Wednesday and that all children may go on this trip even if it isn’t their day. We have sufficient supervision.

Our class photograph will be at 11am next Tuesday. It would be good if all children could be here for it. Children who don’t usually attend on Tuesday’s would need to be here by 10-45am.

Moral Citizens: Congratulations to Lachlan Hay and Harrison Crofskey and who received “Huggie Bear” this week.

We hope that you all enjoy the long weekend.

Thank you for the support you gave us during swimming. It is always a busy time but well worth the effort.

Now we are into our Pet Studies. This year we have a focus on life cycles of zoo animals to follow on from our studies earlier in the term. We will be visiting Orana Park on Wednesday 19 Novem-ber leaving school at 9am and returning by 2.30. The children will wear their gym shirts, fleeces and track pants, a warm jacket, sturdy shoes and school sunhat. We will be going even if it rains. The children will need a packed morning tea and lunch and also a drink bottle. A charge of $15 to cover the entrance costs, lessons and the bus will be charged to your fees. If you would like to join us at Orana Park, you are most welcome to meet us there and tickets can be bought at the reception. The children will be receiving lessons from the educators at the park so if you have young children you may prefer to meet us at lunchtime but go your own way during the rest of the time. If you live over that side of town you may choose to take your child home with you at the end of the day but please ensure your teacher is aware of your plans. We hope it is a wonderful day.

I have sent you a letter about Pet Day activities. Do keep the letter handy so you know what is happening when! It is a great time for the children and provides an opportunity for those with creative talents to shine. I have stressed to the children that they do not need a ‘live’ pet. There are plenty of opportunities for participation. Do discourage them from bringing animals that will be unhappy to school. I have also stressed that if they have a dog who does not get on well with others or one that they cannot handle, he needs to stay at home. Consider a pet worm instead!

Last year’s family challenge was a scarecrow. They were amazing! This year, if you would like to participate, the challenge is to produce a gnome…any size, any style, made of any material! I look forward to seeing the wonderful ideas you have again!

Enjoy the long weekend!

This term seems to be rocketing by – an indication of what a busy term it is! With formal assessments now over, the focus in English classes now turns to Poetry Reading and all classes will be involved in various Outdoor Education programmes in the coming weeks. Good luck to all those pupils who are involved in the Independent Schools’ Athletic Sports today.

The Year 8s have been busy preparing for the BOSS Fair, held tomorrow. We are keeping an anxious eye on the weather which at this stage doesn’t look promising!

Last week, the Year 7 pupils were treated to a Leadership workshop lead by Sam Johnson - hot from an Asia/Pacific forum on Peace and Development. Since rising to prominence as the founder of the Student Volunteer Army in 2011, Sam (a former Christ’s College pupil) has gone on to dance with the Duchess of Cambridge and sip tea with the Dalai Lama. The workshop was focused around Leadership in preparation for their role as student leaders next year. The pupils actively discussed individual roles within teams. They looked at their own strengths and reflected on their contributions to team-planning. There was time for lots of questions and discussion at the end. Some of the group were inspired and keen to learn more about Sam’s work and how they could become involved. The Year 7s now look forward to their Leadership Week in Week 7.

At last weekend’s Sunday morning service at the Cathedral, a number of the Cathedral Choristers received their surplices and new ribbons.

It was a very special moment for William Morris (5B) and Thomas Whitteker (5B) each of whom received his surplice, so becoming a full member of the Cathedral Choir.

The ribbons, which represent the grades attained in chorister voice training at the Cathedral, were awarded to:

Light Blue: Joshua Erasmus, Damian Fraser, Timo Niehausmeier & Oscar Parkes (6B);

Dark Blue: Kane Jones (7SB), Rupert Pett & William Rowe-Lucas (6B); and

Red: Albert Bell (7SB).

Congratulations, boys!

Congratulations to Andrew Welsh (4B) and Thomas Whitteker (5B) who earned Gold Values cards this week; and to Isabella Bullen (5G) who earned a Silver Values card.
