Planet Ark Tree Day

The GPS Green Team added a banana passionfruit vine to our garden and a blood orange, mandarin and lemonade tree

to our school orchard on Friday as a part of Tree Day. Thanks to Grafton Toyota and the Clarence Valley Council for

continuing to support our school’s involvement in the Planet Ark Tree Day. Special thanks to Mrs Robertson and Mr

Lamb for picking up our trees from Maclean!

Earn and Learn

We have registered again this year for the Woolworths “Earn and Learn”

promotion. When shopping at Woolworths, we encourage all family and

friends to collect the stickers offered for Grafton Public School. You will

get one sticker for every $10 spent. Stickers can be placed on special

sticker cards or can just be placed loosely in the marked GPS Collection

boxes. Blank sticker cards and the collection boxes can be found in both our

offices or at the local Woolies store. We appreciate your support! Last time

this program was run by Woolies, we gained thousands of dollars of valuable

new resources for our school and hope to do the same this year!

Planning is well underway for Kindergarten 2016, with the Kinder Kritters Orientation program

commencing in a few weeks. If there are any little brothers and sisters, friends, or cousins who are

starting “big school” next year, please call in to get forms as soon as possible so that they can be a part

of this program. Please spread the word to friends and neighbours who may have pre-schoolers starting

with us next year.

A reminder that Wheelathon sponsorship money is due back by this Friday please! The battle is close for the class

prizes, so keep those monies coming in.

and technology. The program will link young scientists with science in action and will complement the school curriculum.

Develop advances skills in science, mathematics and technology.

Access up to date technology and scientific equipment.

Liaise with experts in the scientific field.

Complete field research projects.

Work in small teams and develop scientific reporting methods.

Interact with other highly motivated students.

Length of Program: One day each fortnight for one school year.

Interested parents and students are invited to attend an information evening. This evening will be held at South

Grafton High School (SGHS) Library from 5.30 to 6.00pm on Thursday August 20, 2015.

PLEASE NOTE: Please come to the the Queen St Main Office to collect an application form and self nomination form.

These must be returned to SGHS Office by 3.00pm Monday August 31, 2015.

Brief but Important

* Well done to our two debating teams - Grafton Gold and Grafton Blue. Both teams debated Gulmarrad at South

Grafton Public School today, resulting in one win and one loss. Both teams received great feedback from the

adjudicator and enjoyed themselves throughout the debates. These debates were our final debates in this year's

competition. All debators will receive a participation certificate on assembly shortly. Ms Griffiths has really enjoyed

working with the teams and has proudly watched their skill and confidence grow.

* Special thanks to the McGrail Skinner family who have donated some books to our Support Unit in appreciation of

our support of last Friday afternoon’s Fun Day at the racecourse.

* Deputy Principal and Principals Award Ceremonies will be held on both campuses next Tuesday 4th August. If your

child is due to get an award, you will receive an invite within the next couple of days.

* Sadly, our Year 2 excursion to Alumny Creek had to be postponed on Friday at the last minute. A heavy shower at

8.30am prompted the Alumny Creek Reserve committee to call us to explain that the grounds were too wet for the

day to be enjoyable. Hence many of the children (and teachers) enjoyed a day at school in 2015 dressed like they

would have been in 1915. Wash up those gorgeous costumes because we will reschedule and will let parents know more

details when finalised. Year 2 would especially like to thank Brodie Millard for bringing his whip in and giving us a

thrilling whip cracking demonstration! He was much better than the teachers!

* A large number of our students will be attending the District Athletics Carnival on Friday, representing GPS, under

the supervision of Mr Avery and Miss Buckley. Permission notes and money need to be returned ASAP if not already

returned. Good luck boys and girls!

* GPS Boys Basketball team participated in the Knockout Gala Day at Sportz Central on Tuesday. They won their first

game, got beaten by four points in the main semi and took out third in region in their last game! The boys all

demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and represented our school with pride. Well done boys!

* Although Mr Keogh is on leave, there will still be band on Mondays and Fridays and before school band fun so come

prepared.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Education week is upon us and we are pumped! This Thursday we have our Open Day and we are looking forward to

seeing every child have a family member visit his/her room and review their work and that which is being undertaken

within the classroom. It is a time where our community can demonstrate their support of the education programs being

offered here at Grafton Public School. It is also provides an opportunity to view the changes that have been made

within our school grounds and the opportunities being offered to our students across the creative and practical arts

curriculum areas. We also have a short concert on each campus and the opportunity to share recess (morning tea) with

your children. We have made some improvements and additions to our playground just in time for this week’s event.

Other aspects of Education Week that our school is engaged in with our colleague state schools, the ‘Grafton

Community of Schools’ include:- the opening of an art exhibition at the Grafton Regional Gallery at 11.00am tomorrow

(Tuesday); the display of students’ work and photos at Grafton Shoppingworld; and, ‘Readings on the Radio’, where two

of our students James Deefholts and Jazz Crawford will be reading on 2GF. They can be heard on Tuesday and

Wednesday between 8am and 9 am and on the evening show, as well as on Wednesday and Thursday between 9am and

11am. We are very pleased to be part of this exciting community event.

“All dressed up with no-where to go!.” Our Year 2 students had their excursion day at Alumny Creek, returning to the

bygone eras, postponed at the 11th hour due to the inclement weather. We are glad we did take this action as the day

only deteriorated which would have meant a cold and miserable time for the students. We’ll wait until the ground dries

a little and the weather improves.

I hope you all can find a moment to share some of your education stories with your children/grand-children. Hopefully

all children will have a family member visit our school on Thursday and provide their support for the child and

education.

I hope everyone can find a few mindful moments within the week,

Will Randall

Principal.
