Fit and Firing – By Matt Fotia

Wandin young gun Patrick Hodgett has given the Dogs finals chances a massive shot in the arm, after his five goal haul inspired their come from behind 16 point victory over Beaconsfield this Saturday, 17.9 (111) to 13.17 (95).

The Dogs remain in sixth place on the Premier Division ladder but now sit just two points behind fifth placed Cranbourne, after they kicked 16 goals to nine after quarter time completing a 126 point swing against Beaconsfield in the process.

Wandin lost their round three, four and five games to Beaconsfield, Cranbourne and Narre Warren by a combined total of 326 points, struggling to adapt to the home grounds of their new counterparts.

Coach Nick Adam said he and his side were embarrassed by their efforts down the highway in the earlier part of the season and had spoken about the opportunities that the return legs would hold for them.

“We were embarrassed by what we produced on the bigger grounds and talked all week about the opportunities that were going to present themselves over the coming weeks and this was the first one,”

“We knew the size of the ground wasn’t going to do it for us.”

The Dogs, like many sides, have encountered a number of injuries throughout the 2019 season which have forced other players to play different roles when required.

Clint Johnston was impressive in the ruck on Saturday, filling the boots of Michael Fowkes, whilst young pup Hodgett continued to grow

into his role as one of the Dog’s key forwards. In recent times, with injuries to big names Justin Van Unen and Daniel Gorringe, Hodgett has become the focal point down forward.

Whilst he was back to being third wheel this weekend, Hodgett still managed to change the game kicking four goals in the second quarter to put Wandin in front at half time.

“Pat Hodgett was an interesting one,”

“We tried to get (Jake) Bowd to him because we were conscious of what Bowd does in the air and he (Bowd) ended up being taken off him because Pat had taken him to the cleaners in the second quarter,”

“It was really good reward for Patty, we know what he can do and obviously he’s the third wheel in a pretty good forward line, but he had a day out on the weekend.”

The Dogs are getting closer to returning to full strength with the aforementioned Fowkes and midfielder John Ladner expected to return to the field this weekend, the time slot yet to be confirmed.

With confidence building, Adam and the Dogs want to finish the season strongly and give themselves a chance to do something special in September, much like they did in 2018, where they charged home at the backend of the season, before going on to claim the premiership.

“We want to win out (the season), we have Cranbourne and Narre Warren at home and then three Valley sides to finish off, so thats the aim,”

“But it’s about creating an opportunity to play in September,”

“I’d love to give ourselves an opportunity - six weeks to go last year I think we were fourth, but we got fit and healthy at the backend of the year and who’s to say we can’t do it again,”

“That’s the attitude we always h

Worksafe Report

COUNTRY CLAIMS 2019 BRIAN MOLONY CUPWorkSafe AFL Victoria Country has claimed the 2019 Brian Molony Cup, after defeating the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) by 17 points.

The 2019 Brian Molony Cup delivered another exciting game of football between two great rivals.

AFL Victoria Country (formerly VCFL) and the VAFA have been playing representative football against one another since its inception in 1993. The games have generally been extremely competitive with close results, as evident in this year’s cup.

As expected, the standard of football was at an all-time high with a close game predictable from the first bounce.

The first Quarter saw AFL Victoria Country kicking into a four-goal breeze. VAFA dominated the inside 50’s but a strong defense led by Lachlan Smith, Nathan Cooper and Nathan Horbury were outstanding repelling many forwards thrusts. The country boys played the conditions beautifully having 46 marks at quarter time to keep the VAFA goalless.

The second quarter saw the VAFA list their rating kicking three out of the first four goals to open up a handy lead, but the midfield depth country had through Cole, Mattingly, Mannagh

and skipper Baird eventually got to the top and gave the forwards plenty of opportunities.

VAFA were in the game at half time with an 11-point lead. Coach Frawley moved James Hayes to the wing, and with his exquisite skills proved to be a match winner with second half goals. VAFA would not be denied kicking five goals in the third quarter to take a seven-point lead at the final break. Sam Michael the dominant big man on the ground and Best On Ground for country was now giving his midfield first use.

The last quarter saw a real struggle with both sides kicking early goals. Former AFL player Josh Green playing for the VAFA was completely shut down by Geelong’s Alex Cincotta. JD Hayes kicked two sealers and with country kicking the last four goals of the match, they proved too strong in the end to run out winners by 17 points.

Having coached the country side for the past three years, coach Danny Frawley was all smiles after his side’s win, adding another victory to his record books.

Congratulations to all players, coaches, umpires, leagues, clubs and staff from within AFL Victoria Country and the VAFA for their involvement in making the event a memorable one.

Healesville FNC – Ash Hamer 200 Senior GamesThis is what local football is all about.

A young boy wants to play footy and heads to the local club and starts off with Auskick. He then follows through to the junior club and plays in all the grades. Ash had some success throughout the juniors winning multiple awards and was fortunate enough to win a couple of flags with his mates.

Thankfully he is enjoying his footy and moves up to the senior club and starts with the under 18s, and is one of the best players on the ground in their 2005 premiership.

2006 he becomes a regular senior player playing mainly as a forward, capable of kicking multiple goals and is also very good when used in defence.

Ash played his 200th senior game round 11 against Berwick at Healesville and was able to share a special moment running through the banner with his two boys Max and Charlie

Ash’s achieved the following whilst playing for HFNC:

200 Seniors Games50 Reserves Games37 Under 18 Games(Total 287 for Healesville Senior Football Netball Club)200 Senior GoalsLeading Senior Goal Kicker 2011Reserves premiership player 2012

Premierships : 2013,2016

Ash has been lucky enough to share his achievements with some of his great mates

going back to his Auskick days, he is a brilliant club man and a well-respected

player throughout the league.

Not only is Ash a leader at the club but also the local A Grade

Cricket coach and pretty handy with the bat.

Well done Ash on your remarkable career!

We also like to take this opportunity to congratulate The Berwick F.C. for showing great sportsmanship on the day, firstly for acknowledging his milestone as he left the ground after the game. Secondly to Berwick reserves coaching group for understanding we were a little undermanned on the day and shouting our twos a slab after their game .

Umpiring News….

With a number of old and new umpires finally receiving their new uniforms last week, it was great to see less of the old blue uniforms and for many of our new boundary umpires less of the white tops that they have been wearing. As a group we always want to strive to improve our professionalism, and correct attire certainly plays a major part in this area.

The pathway for our junior umpires to gain experience in umpiring senior football has been a high priority over the past 5 years, and sometimes due to work or others that play football on Saturday, this opportunity doesn’t always present itself. Due to a Sunday game earlier in the season, Josh Johansen gained valuable umpiring experience at Yarra Glen, and Max Travis gets his chance this week with Mount Evelyn Under18’s having the week off, when he partners Warwick Marsh in the reserves at Wandin. Toby Hepworth should make his senior umpiring debut next week with

Monbulk Under18’s having the week off, and we know this experience certainly helps in the development of young umpires.

Thank you to David and everyone involved in running the SALT program, and I’m sure all umpires in attendance on Wednesday night would have gained and taken something away from the presentation. This is an outstanding program and provides a great benefit to individuals and clubs.

Next Social Function is -

From the Media Desk – By Matt Fotia

A massive weekend of football in the Outer East, as the race for fifth heats up in the Premier Division, two premiership favourites are thumped and the rise of the ruckman continues.

Check it all out in the Football Review.

1. Year of the Ruckman The 2018 AFL season saw Melbourne’s Max Gawn and Collingwood’s Brodie Grundy bring the ruckman back into vogue, as the two big men propelled their respective sides deep into the finals series. Grundy was mere minutes away from becoming a premiership ruckman and Gawn was perceived as a genuine Brown-low contender.

2019 has seen the rise of the ruckman continue into the Outer East. Let’s take a closer look at some of the best around.

Zach Monkhorst (Woori Yallock)The Tigers number 20 has been enormous this season. After a season plugging holes at either end of the ground, Monkhorst has welcomed some consistency in his role to become the competitions number one ruckman.

He’s booted 15 goals this season for the Tigers as a mobile marking option who can also sit a kick behind the play. He’s been in the Tigers best players nine times out of ten and has been best on ground on three occasions, against Wandin, Beaconsfield and Cranbourne. Like Gawn in 2018, Monkhorst is a genuine contender for the Best and Fairest.

Michael Wenn (Cranbourne) Wenn might not be as mobile as Monkhorst but he’s as strong as an ox and reminds many of Hawthorn big man Ben McEvoy. A VFL Listed player with Port Melbourne, Wenn often gives the Cranbourne on-ballers first use of the football and played out an epic ruck battle with Monkhorst back in round three.

Michael Langworthy (Monbulk) Langworthy has transformed himself in 2019, from a deep forward to one of the best ruck-forwards in Di-vision One. Fitter and stronger this season, Langworthy has found himself in the Hawks best players on six occasions and provides a marking option around the ground who can use the ball well.

He still finds the goals as well - he’s got 14 goals for the year with a best of six.

Michael Sikora (Doveton)The Doves most prized recruit has been impressive in his first year at AJ Robinson Oval. He’s got VFL ex-perience and was one of the better ruckman in the Eastern Football League prior to crossing over.

Whilst he’s not the quickest across the turf, he’s one of the best exponents of tap-work in the Outer East,

with a long reach and an extra few centimetres on most of his opponents. He’s been best on ground twice this season and if he can sneak forward and kick a couple he could be the Doves ace in hole.

Ryan Fooks (Mount Evelyn) Fooks mightn’t be as tall as Sikora or as potent as Langworthy but he probably has the biggest heart in the division.

Constantly coming up against players bigger than him, Fooks has been more than admirable this season, with his impressive aerobic ability making him a key player for the Rovers. Has been in the best players on eight occasions this season and was best on ground once.

Troy Armstrong (Yarra Junction) A monster of a man who steps up when needed. Might not possess a great leap but he’s able to make up for that with his use of body and nous. Collects a fair bit of the football for the Eagles and dominated on the biggest stage last season, winning the best on ground medal in Yarra Junction’s premiership.

Colin Bastow (Gembrook-Cockatoo) The Gembrook big man has come into form when his side has needed him. He’s been their best player in two of their last three outings, giving him a total of three best on grounds for the season. With ex-North Melbourne and Geelong ruckman Hamish McIntosh running around with him on occasion as well Bastow has every opportunity to learn from one of the best and improve exponentially.

Could be a big player come finals time.

2. Premier PushoverHeading into this weekend Yarra Junction and Monbulk would’ve been short priced favourites for their re-spective premierships. The Hawks were undefeated having taken all before them and the Eagles had just one loss to their name and had also beaten every side in their division on at least one occasion.

Come 5:00pm all of that had changed as both teams were on the end of some big losses.

Monbulk traveled to Pakenham looking to become the first side to come away from Toomuc Reserve with a win to their name. By quarter time that looked nigh on impossible as the Lions led by 34 points. The Hawks kicked just one goal to three quarter time as Jordan Stewart (four goals) and Darcy Hope (three) run amok down forward for the Lions.

Throughout their 68 point win Pakenham were simultaneously able to strengthen their home fortress, instil some more belief amongst their own group and also give the rest of the chasing pack a boost as they dis-mantled the previously invincible Hawks.

OUTER EAST

From the Media Desk continued

Monbulk were hit by injuries and will say it was the loss they had to have. Maybe it was, but not by that much.

Out at Seville, the Blues were out to put some demons to bed with a win over the Eagles.

Not only did they put those Demons to bed, they tucked them in, turned the lights off and closed the door, winning by 69 points, 16.16(106) to 5.7(37).

Josh Fraser booted four majors and Justin Meyers ran the show as Seville took the first step towards prem-iership favouritism. Like the Lions it would’ve given the Blues a massive mental boost to defeat Junction as it validated their recent form.

There’s no need to panic for the Eagles, but like the Hawks it won’t be the loss that hurts, rather the way it happened.

3. Start Your Engines

The race for fifth place in the Premier Division starts now as Cranbourne, Wandin and Olinda Ferny Creek all eye off the remaining spot in finals following a big weekend in the top division.

Wandin grabbed a massive 15 point win over Beaconsfield to move just two points behind Cranbourne on the ladder after the Eagles could only manage a draw against Woori Yallock thanks to a goal after the siren from Tiger’s skipper Jake Matthews.

Meanwhile Olinda Ferny Creek continued to sneak under the radar with a comfortable win over Healesville.

With just six weeks left in the season and just six points between fifth and seventh lets take a closer look at their run home.

Cranbourne - 5th (4 - 5 - 1 - 2 - 26pts - 133%)

Form - LLWLD

Run Home - Wandin (A), Healesville (H), Berwick (A), Narre Warren (H), Olinda Ferny Creek (H), Upwey-Tecoma (A)

The Eagles opened this all up in round eight when they unexpectedly lost to Olinda Ferny Creek, as they gave Wandin a real boost ahead of the Dogs favourable run home and let Olinda Ferny Creek right back into the race.

The draw at weekend is the first time a side from the Yarra Ranges has taken points when playing in the South East, showing their vulnerability. However - a win this weekend could put it all to bed with their - much - superior percentage.

Wandin - 6th (5 - 6 - 0 - 1 - 24pts - 75%)

Form - WWLLW

Run Home - Cranbourne (H), Narre Warren (H), Upwey-Tecoma (A), Bye, Healesville (A), Olinda

Ferny Creek (A)

The Dogs are starting to look the goods, especially after this weekend. Not only did they win over a prem-iership contender - completing a 125 point swing in the process - their closest rivals for the final spot dropped points.

They’re starting to get players back and are edging closer to full strength, they have two crucial games on their home deck and they don’t travel outside familiar territory for the remainder of the season.

A win this weekend puts them in prime position and it could all come down to their round 18 game with Olinda Ferny Creek.

Olinda FC - 7th (4 - 7 - 0 - 1 - 20pts - 83%)

Form - WLLWW

Run Home - Woori Yallock (A), Bye, Beaconsfield (H), Berwick (H), Cranbourne (A), Wandin (H)

The Bloods, like the Dogs, are beginning to get back to full strength and it shows in their recent form. They have a better percentage then the Dogs and that could come in handy if it comes down to their round 18 meeting.

They do however have the toughest run home in terms of opposition, with every side currently above them on the ladder. They’ll take confidence from their home win over Cranbourne and the fact that Wandin have used home ground advantage to grab wins against Beaconsfield and Berwick.

If the Bloods do make the finals they’ll be coming in off the back of some wins against fellow finalists on a massive wave of momentum.
