S I R J O H N M O N A S H was a distinguished Australian who contributed to almost every level of society. We take inspiration from one of his guiding philosophies, as captured in his famous words

“...equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community.”

Sir John Monash was himself a gifted student, but was forced to end his own university studies shortly after they had begun due to financial hardship. He eventually returned to study and ultimately used his education to turn his natural talent into ability, and his ability into great achievement.

Monash University was named after Sir John Monash (1865-1931), a distinguished engineer, lawyer and soldier who commanded the Australian forces in France in World War I. Later, as the first chairman of the State Electricity Commission of Victoria, he took on the immense task of overseeing the development of the brown coal resources of the Latrobe Valley. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Melbourne from 1923 until 1931.

As a scholar and a man of action he exemplified the University’s motto, Ancora Imparo, a saying attributed to Michelangelo that means “I am still learning”. The motto was adopted by the University after it was established by proclamation under an Act of the Parliament of Victoria on 30 May 1958.

When teaching began at Clayton in 1961, the University consisted of the faculties of Arts, Economics and Politics, Engineering, Medicine, and Science, with an initial enrolment of 363 students. Today, Monash has more than 86,750 students – including more than 11,000 who study offshore – and more than 8,000 full-time-equivalent staff. In Australia, campuses are at Caulfield, Clayton, Parkville, and Peninsula; two international campuses; Malaysia and Indonesia and partnership campuses with the IITB-Monash Research Academy at Mumbai in India, and the Southeast University-Monash University Joint Graduate School (Suzhou) in China.

There is also a centre at Prato in Italy. Monash also created the Monash Warwick Alliance with the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom. This alliance, along with our other partnerships, signals Monash as a ‘globally networked’ university.

Monash has ten faculties: Art, Design and Architecture; Arts; Business and Economics; Education; Engineering; Information Technology; Law; Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences; Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; and Science.

Monash University is a richly diverse and multicultural community serving Indigenous and recent Australians together with students from more than 160 other countries: international students make up some 48 per cent of enrolments, and more than 11,000 course enrolments in programs that are increasingly being made available outside Australia, mainly in the Asia-Pacific Region.

Today’s graduation ceremony may only be a brief moment in your life, but it undoubtedly represents one of your most significant accomplishments. It provides an opportunity for you to celebrate the successful conclusion of years of preparation and endeavour with your fellow members of the Monash community.

But while your time as a student at Monash may be drawing to a close, your ongoing connection with us remains no less vital. A most important strength of this University is its wider community, and the range of opportunities for you to stay in touch with that community has never been broader.

For many graduates, this is an opportunity to help ensure that the experience of Monash for the next generation of students is even more rewarding than their own.

This could involve contributing to support more scholarships, to extend our teaching and learning programs or to increase the impact of our research. Others donate their time and enthusiasm by participating in our student mentoring programme or by sharing their knowledge and experience with the wider Monash community.

And never forget that Monash University exists for the benefit of everyone. For decades it has fulfilled that purpose by educating and training new generations of professionals and leaders in evidence-based decision making and by undertaking world class research that has proven vital to improving the human condition.

It is my sincere hope that the qualification you receive today furthers your own endeavours to effect positive change in a world that faces severe challenges as well as great opportunities.

As a graduate of this University, you represent what a Monash education can make possible. For it is through your excellence, and your connection to Monash, that we as a university have forged a path to where we are now. Your individual effort is part of our own effort. Your success reflects, and builds upon, our own success.

My sincerest congratulations for what you have achieved today, and I warmly welcome you to the family that is Monash University alumni.

    Mr Simon McKeon AO Chancellor

Your graduation from Monash University marks the culmination of years of dedication you have invested into your studies, and the invaluable support you have received in that time from your family, friends, teachers and classmates. This achievement deserves recognition and celebration.

Whatever path you embark on after graduating, you continue to be an important member of the Monash community. I hope, too, that you remain committed to the values that Monash represents: excellence, enterprise, an international outlook and a commitment to social justice.

With the world facing an increasingly complex series of environmental and economic challenges – as well as unprecedented social and technological change – the demand for those qualities that Monash exemplifies will only increase. We have already seen in 2020 the devastation caused by the Australian bushfires, and the catastrophic effects COVID-19 has had across the world.

As Sir John Monash so famously remarked: “Adopt as your fundamental creed that you will equip yourself for life, not solely for your own benefit but for the benefit of the whole community”.

As a graduate of Monash, you are well positioned to contribute real benefit to your local and international community.

Monash is one of the most in-demand and innovative universities in the world. We are distinguished both in Australia and beyond for our excellence in education and research, as well as our global reach.

We are recognised internationally for the positive impact we make in sustainability, technological innovation, economic and social development, health and global security. We are also consistently ranked in the top 100 universities worldwide.

Upon graduating, you have joined a community of more than 410,000 Monash graduates across 160 countries, many of whom are now leaders in business and government, even as they continue to play an active and often vital role in the Monash community.

Above all, I urge you to remember the Monash University motto: Ancora Imparo, which translates to “I am still learning”.

Graduation marks the successful completion of a degree or diploma, but your education does not end there. Learning is lifelong; it will nourish and sustain you for all of your days after you leave Monash.

I offer you my sincere congratulations and best wishes for the future.

Professor Margaret Gardner AC President and Vice-Chancellor

“My involvement in the Sir John Monash Mentoring Program has been truly rewarding. Meeting a diverse group of students each year, hearing about their background and experiences, bringing out the strategic and creative thinker in them, and ending the program with a sense of personal accomplishment and enrichment, has certainly been the standout memories of the whole experience for me. You can’t help but feel humbled that you are able to assist in making a positive and lasting difference in a student’s life.”

Harsh Vardhan Manager, Investor Relations, ANZ

    Advance your career

The Monash University motto Ancora Imparo translated from Italian means ‘I am still learning’. You can continue your professional development with Monash long after you graduate.

A range of alumni events from leadership panels and masterclasses to industry and alumni engagement networking receptions are hosted each year nationally and internationally. Additionally, you have the opportunity to attend a wide range of seminars with expert speakers, research symposiums or lectures hosted by Faculty Deans featuring distinguished alumni speakers.

    ALUMNI TO ALUMNI MENTORING PROGRAM

As a valued member of a growing global alumni community you are invited to join the University’s new Alumni to Alumni Mentoring Program.

This professional and career-focussed mentoring platform provides you with an opportunity to mentor early and mid-career alumni, or be mentored yourself by a peer. Senior executive alumni also participate in this program.

Mentoring is a positive and supportive experience that can enhance your career, both as mentor and mentee, and expand your professional network. Monash also encourages reverse mentoring whereby senior executive alumni may be seeking a fresh outlook from younger alumni.

Visit monash.edu/about/mentoring/alumni-to-alumni-mentoring for details on how to join.

“There is tremendous personal payback for helping guide someone down a path you’ve already been on.”

Danny Armstrong Managing Partner, ShineWing Australia

    Host a student intern

Many Monash students complete a work placement, or internship, as part of their course. Our global alumni community provides thousands of students with invaluable work experience through these internships.

Hosting a student in your workplace or involving them in an off-site project can provide your organisation with access to student skills, development ideas and perspectives. Monash provides insurance for the student and can help you design the internship project or placement. For international placements, Monash provides students with visa assistance.
