CARNEGIE COLLEGE GRADUATION CEREMONY 2011 1

Welcome to the magnificent and historic surroundings of Dunfermline Abbey.

This is a truly superb setting in which to celebrate the achievements of our students; those who have successfully completed Scottish Qualification Awards, Professional Institute qualifications and Degree programmes run in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University. Year on year the number of students achieving qualifications increases and we are delighted that so many of you have come along tonight with family and friends to share this momentous occasion in your life with us.

The atmosphere and the history that surrounds the Abbey and Abbey Church and their precincts is immense. The Abbey is the last resting place of several of the early Kings and Queens of Scotland, including King David I, Queen Margaret and King Alexander III, and Robert the Bruce is buried beneath the pulpit at the front of the Abbey Church. A few hundred yards away is the birthplace and childhood home of Andrew Carnegie. The adjoining Museum celebrates the life and times of Carnegie and the rich legacy left to the people of Dunfermline and the world.

It is a great honour to hold our Graduation Ceremony here and we are sure it will be a long and meaningful memory for you.

Message from the Principal and Chief Executive, Geoff Fenlon

Congratulations! This is what it is all about!

Tonight we recognise your success, your hard work, your achievement.

This evening represents the pinnacle of your time at Carnegie College. The sacrifices you have made, the hours spent revising and now, with the support received from friends and family, it has all been worthwhile. This is your night – you have earned it!

We also send you off tonight on the next stage of your journey, whatever that may be. However we are certain that you will be as successful moving on as you have been here at Carnegie College.

Very many congratulations on graduating and we all wish you even more success for the future.

“Aim for the highest”

– Andrew Carnegie

TONIGHT’S SPEAKERS

Graham Bowstead, Chairman, Carnegie College Board of Management

Graham has served on the College Board of Management since 2000. He was elected Chairman in June 2006. Prior to this he was Chairman of Young Enterprise Scotland in the Lothians and is a firm advocate of business/education links.

Born in Farnborough in 1955, Graham left school aged 16 to start an apprenticeship as a compositor in the printing industry, attending West Surrey College of Art and Design in Guildford. Apart from one year teaching English in Spain he has spent his whole working life in the printing industry progressing through production and sales to general management. He is currently Managing Director of Perivan Scotland.

Graham lives in Kinross and is married to Maite from Bilbao, Spain. He has two daughters and two grandchildren.

The Lord Sandy Leitch of Oakley, Honorary Chancellor of Carnegie College

Raised in the West Fife former mining village of Oakley, Lord Leitch is one of the UK’s most experienced, influential and respected business leaders – recognised nationally and internationally.

With a distinguished career in the insurance and financial services sectors, he is currently Chairman of Bupa, Intrinsic Financial Services and Scottish Widows, and also Deputy Chairman at Lloyds Banking Group.

In April 2011, Lord Leitch accepted the role of Chancellor to the College – the first ever to be appointed. The Chancellor works with the College’s Academic Council and the Executive to help, advise, develop, promote and grow the College.

Lord Leitch is a passionate advocate for lifelong learning and expects this to continue through his own life: ‘Every time I think I have reached a point in life where I know just about everything I need to know, I discover that there is much more yet to learn, and I’m off on another steep learning curve!’

He is married to Noelle, who hails from Texas, and has a young daughter, Kathleen. He has three daughters from his first marriage and is the proud grandfather to six grandchildren.

Geoff Fenlon, Principal and Chief Executive, Carnegie College

In April 2011 Geoff took up the position of Principal and Chief Executive with the College. Prior to his appointment he was for the last four years General Manager of the International Convention Centre (ICC), Birmingham.

He is a former director of the Travel and Tourism National Training Organisation, a former director of Tourism People Scotland, and was the founding Scottish chairman of People 1st, the UK Sector Skills Council for Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism.

Geoff spent 13 years as a Royal Navy logistics officer. During this time he held various appointments, including lecturer at the Air Engineering School in Portsmouth. During the first Gulf war he was awarded the Joint Commander’s Special Commendation for his role as JHQ Naval Administrator.

Jenna McLinden, President, Carnegie College Student Representative Council

Jenna is now in her second year as President of the Student Association. Prior to her initial election in 2010, she was a full time HNC Professional Cookery student. Upon completion of her tenure Jenna will continue her studies with Carnegie College before progressing her career in the Hospitality industry.

APPOINTMENT OF HONORARY FELLOWS OF CARNEGIE COLLEGE

Carnegie College Fellowships are traditionally awarded to friends of the College and our community. They are a mark of our respect and gratitude for their support.

Noel McKenna OBE

Noel was born in Londonderry in 1944. In 1961 he began a student apprenticeship at Portsmouth Dockyard and after gaining a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1968, he worked for the Ministry of Defence in Rosyth and Bath. His career has centred around Marine Engineering and in 1999 he received the OBE for services to Ship Engineering. He joined Babock at Rosyth in 1987 and in 2002 he was appointed Managing Director of Babcock Engineering Services, retiring in 2004. Noel served on the Carnegie College Board of Management between 2003 and 2009, and was a member of the Board of Carnegie Enterprise Limited and the College’s Estates Committee.

A dedicated Rotarian, Noel was President of the Dunfermline Rotary Club in 2009/10. He presently serves on the board of the charity Furniture Plus.

Noel is a keen golfer and is a member of both Dunfermline Golf Club and the New Club, St Andrews. He lives in Limekilns and is married to Catherine and has three children. Noel admits to enjoying a pint at his local, the Ship Inn.

Jim Leishman MBE

Jim Leishman was born in Lochgelly in 1953 and signed as a schoolboy for Dunfermline Athletic Football Club in 1968, but six years later his playing career came to a premature end as the result of a broken leg. He began his management career with small Fife clubs, but after a brief period as assistant manager at Cowdenbeath he was appointed coach at Dunfermline. By 1983 he was appointed manager, leading his team to promotion into the Premier League in 1987. Leaving Dunfermline in 1990, Jim went on to manage Inverness Thistle, Montrose and Livingston football clubs. He returned to Dunfermline in 2003 taking up the role of Director of Football. Jim is currently Director of Football at DAFC.

He is now as well known for fund raising activities associated with the Mary Leishman Foundation, a charity set up by Jim, his family and friends to celebrate the life and carry on the legacy of his wife of 30 years who died in 2009. Mary and her family were lifelong members of the Kelty Musical Association. Mary was an inspiration to everyone she met and the Foundation’s aim is to celebrate Mary’s life and remember her contribution to the community by raising as much money as possible for local good causes. The Foundation has raised thousands of pounds in the short time it has been in existence and Jim himself has played a leading role in its establishment. Beneficiaries include individuals, groups, schools and colleges, with monies being raised through both large and small events taking place throughout the area.
