more than 4,500 candidates
for degrees at the e of Kansas this spring representing
97 Kansas counties, 43 other states, the District of
Columbia, Puerto Rico and 59
other countries have been
announced by the University
Registrar.
KU s Class of 2009 numbers about 8,000, including 2,500
who completed degree work in
summer and fall 2008. Because KU conducts only one formal
commencement ceremony. each year, many of these cand 1dr wifl S 17 for 4i Pv Mty s1W comme
1 procession into Memorial Stadium.
About 4,000 members of
the Class of 2009 are expected to participate.

FOR THE INDEPENDENT
LAWRENCE - Hillary Janzen, Ashley Friesen and Meghan Navarro, all of
Burrton High School, were among the 118 high school journalism students statewide
that won honors in the Kansas Scholastic Press Association State Contest May 2.
The contest, which had 1,056 entries, was held at the
University of Kansas. Students qualified for the
state contest by placing at one of six regional contests in
February. At the state contest, students participated in 18
categories: Janzen earned Fourth
Honorable Mention in
Headline Writing and Yearbook Copy Writing; Friesen received Fourth Honorable Mention for
Newspaper Sports Writing;
and Navarro won Fifth Honorable Mention for
Newspaper Sports Writing.
