My choice to come to UCD wasnatural - no other college was offeringa Law Masters in Intellectual Property& Information Technology Law. Whileother colleges perhaps could havetaught these courses, UCD offered methe best and most exciting staff andprogram to work with. Their coursesbring forward a greater awareness ofcurrent and potential future legalissues than most other colleges. Evenwhile working full time, UCD providedme with an exceptional education,ways to work college into my busyschedule, and opportunities toenhance my lectures with externalconferences. When the time came todecide my next step, the staff werehugely supportive, and helped meapply for a PhD and a scholarship. Iam now happily pursuing a PhD in mytop choice school once again - UCD.

I’ve always been interested in bothdisciplines of law and psychology, so forme the LLM in Criminology and CriminalJustice suited my interests perfectly. Myyear in UCD has greatly broadened myperspectives and horizons for my future,as the specialisation of this masters incriminology and criminal justice hasprovided a good platform for futurecareer development opportunities ordoctoral studies. As a graduate ofBusiness and Law,I took a keeninterest in EUaffairs and soughtto pursue a Masterof Laws (LLM) inEuropean Law and Public Affairs atUCD. It is an ideal postgraduateprogramme for those interested inlaw, politics, international relations,the EU, and current affairs. The course offers a healthy mixture oflegal subjects pertaining to theEuropean Union, in addition to politicsand international relations, whichperfectly complement each other.Studying EU law in all its variousforms really enhanced my educationand my understanding of theformulation and application of EU lawthroughout the EU member states. At UCD, time spent outside lectures isjust as important as the time spentinside. Colin Scott is the Dean of Law and aProfessor of EU Regulation andGovernance. His research interestsinclude the regulation of both businessand governments, nationally andinternationally. Colin’s most recentproject, run jointly between UCD, theEuropean University Institute, andTilburg University, has been on theemergence, effectiveness, and legitimacyof transnational private regulation. Heled the unit of this project focusing onthe transnational, private regulation offinancial markets, which included afocus on derivatives, accountingstandards, project finance, bankpayments and the professions. Colin haspublished the outcomes of this researchin many of the leading legal andinterdisciplinary journals. Colin has previously held academic postsat the London School of Economics, theAustralian National University, and theCollege of Europe, Bruges.

The LLM in Commercial Law offered byUCD is a great course. The programmeoffers a diverse range of subjects andthe dissertation module gave me theopportunity to conduct independentresearch in my particular field ofinterest. The School of Law providesexcellent supports to students to assistthem in completing the dissertation,with students being assigned anindividual supervisor who is an expertwithin the particular field of research.The small class sizes for the taughtmodules mean that students are able todiscuss and really analyse the subjectmatter, which I believe has helped me tofurther develop my ability to identify andanalyse problems from a legalperspective. Overall, I found the Commercial LawLLM programme to be very current andpractically focused, and I would highlyrecommend it to students interested incommercial law.

understanding of international human

rights law, political theory of rights and

international relations relating to human

Suzanne Egan is a graduate of theUCD School of Law and has been alecturer in International and EuropeanHuman Rights Law at the Schoolsince 1992. Suzanne is a qualifiedbarrister and holds a Master of LawDegree from Osgoode Hall LawSchool in Toronto. As a member of theIrish Human Rights Commission since2000, she been recognisedinternationally for her work in HumanRights Law. Your studiesThe Law School has over 30 academic staffand offers supervision across the full rangeof legal subjects and approaches.Particular strengths include: CommercialLaw; Criminal Law; Criminal Justice andCriminology; European Law; Public Law,and Legal History. The doctoral programmein law is a structured programme requiringcompletion of a minimum number of taughtmodules and of research leading to thecompletion of a thesis.These modules include a compulsorycourse Introduction to Advanced Researchin Law, and optional courses in qualitativeand quantitative research methods,substantive areas of law and in other areaswhere skills may be required, for examplelanguages or economics.

Students are assigned to a mainsupervisor before arrival, who is supportedby a team of two other members ofacademic staff with expertise in the field ofresearch.

Coming to UCD Sutherland School of Lawcreates the possibility of expertsupervision by leading researchers in awide variety of fields. We have the largestgroup of academic lawyers in Ireland andleading researchers of high internationalstanding across many of the main fields oflaw including European Union law,commercial law, criminology, criminaljustice and criminal law, constitutional lawand governance, human rights, legalhistory and private law.

Ian O’Donnell ia a Professor ofCriminology in UCD. He is Ireland’sforemost expert and commentator in hisfield. Professional Diploma in

Employment Law

Your studiesThe course content includes the nature of

a contract of employment and all its

attendant rights and obligations, with a

focus on employment equality, unfair

dismissal, payment of wages, domestic

leave, and workplace privacy. The content

also includes lectures on the law of

industrial conflict, the constitutional

guarantee of freedom of association,

bullying and stress at work, and the role of

bodies such as the Labour Court. The

assessment strategy involves a written

assignment, participation in a dispute

resolution role play, and an examination.

Your futureThe Diploma is not just for barristers or

solicitors, but also for trade

union/employer association officials,

personnel managers, and human

resources/industrial relations

practitioners. Applications will be

considered from the holders of such

academic and/or professional

qualifications, and/or such experience as

would satisfy the School that they are able

to participate fully in all aspects of the

programme.

The programme has been successfully

completed by a wide variety of persons,

including members of the Labour Court,

the Equality Tribunal, and the National

Employment Rights Authority, and has

proved invaluable for many in advancing

their professional careers.

As a representative of professionalpilots in Ireland, the UCD ProfessionalDiploma in Employment Law helpedme to understand the origins andnuances of the current legislation andauthorities. The course covers all therelevant areas of employment law indepth, including the importance of SI146 to the elusive Supreme Court‘dictionary definition’ of collectivebargaining. In my view the diploma is a must-havequalification for all practitioners in thefront line of employment issues ofright and of interest. The course isgiven by two practising barristers,who are passionate about theirsubject. This passion, combined withthe diversity of students attending, allbring a spectrum of views andstrongly held opinions, which enrichand enlighten the classroom debate.

Your studiesA special feature of the course is the

Award Writing component, which gives a

grounding in the construction and analysis

of reasoned arbitral awards. The

programme also provides a valuable

background knowledge, which will be of

assistance to those who act as expert

witnesses in their own professions or

trade, and who are consulted for the

purpose of giving evidence in court or at

arbitrations. The programme is accredited

by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators in

London, and students awarded the

Diploma will be eligible for election to

Membership of the Institute (M.C.I.Arb.)

and exemption from the Institute’s

Fellowship (F.C.I.Arb) and Chartered

For a number ofyears, I have beeninterested in theGraduate Diplomain Arbitration atthe UCD School ofLaw. As anarchitectural UCDgraduate living in Dublin, I wasfortunate to have the UCD option soimmediately available and the one-yeardiploma course has been hugelyenriching and rewarding.Over the year, the subject rangecovered the broad area of AlternativeDispute Resolution with a particularfocus on arbitration. The combinationof small class size, lecture series, andworkshops have been a well structuredand positive learning experience. Iwould have to single out the input ofthe various teaching staff, which wasan essential part of the experience.The range of attendees at the coursealso provided for diverse viewpointsand lively discussion between theproperty professionals and those fromthe legal world. The entire experiencewas a very positive and rewarding one,and I would recommend it to anybodyinvolved in construction contracts orrelated contractual areas. My onlyregret is not having taken the courseearlier than I did.

Diploma in Adjudication

Adjudication is a widely used means of

resolving disputes, which differs from

arbitration in that it is usually quicker and

more intensive.

The Construction Contracts Act 2013 now

introduces, for the first time, a right to

adjudication in all major construction

contracts, and a national panel of qualified

adjudicators is to be set-up under the Act,

to resolve construction payment disputes.

This course will equip you with the

competence, knowledge and skills to act

as an adjudicator and to advise parties

involved in adjudications.

Your studiesThe course involves a detailed focus on the

law and practice of adjudication in the Irish

context, with particular emphasis on

promoting knowledge and skills to ensure

valid and enforceable adjudicators’

decisions. The Construction Contracts Act

2013; the Irish, UK, and overseas law; and,

the practice of adjudication will be

examined in depth, and a separate module

will also examine adjudication in the non-

construction setting. The course includes

a significant Decision Writing component,

giving a thorough grounding in reasoning

and writing skills towards the production

of reasoned adjudicators’ decisions. A

special module in Irish Law and Procedure

is also provided if you do not already hold a

recognised law qualification. The course

includes contributions from experts in the

field from the major construction bodies,

and accreditation from the Chartered

Institute of Arbitrators will be sought for

the programme.

Who is it for?The course will be of particular interest to

present and future: architects; engineers;

quantity surveyors and building surveyors;

chartered engineers; barristers and

solicitors; and, Fellows of the Chartered

Institute of Arbitrators, as those categories

of professional will be eligible for

appointment to the Panel of Adjudicators

to be set up under the Construction

Contracts Act 2013. Others such as:

human resources professionals; mental

health professionals; residential property

professionals; and, sports management

professionals will also find the programme

of special interest.

A Fellow of theChartered Institute of Arbitrators andan Accredited Mediator, he has actedas arbitrator, advisor, or mediator in awide range of domestic andinternational commercial disputes.
