5 th Grade News Week of May 22, 2017 MATH Fifth graders will be practicing measurement! NO MATH QUIZ THIS WEEK. We will also be recapping ALL we’ve learned in math this year (which is a LOT). Let’s finish strong in math! Keep up the awesome work! HAPPY BIRTHDAY! May 15 – Hermione May 29 – Logan June 27 – Tara July 12 – Clara July 29 – Joseph, Trinity LANGUAGE ARTS * The 5 th graders will finish out the school year working on a poetry unit! The students will write their own poems such as acrostic poems, alphabet alliteration, cinquain, color poem, haiku, and much, much more! *We will also create a book which will include the entire year of our “Idiom of the Week!” *On Friday, the students will be practicing the school play during our class time! *Don’t forget to visit the library over the summer! RELIGION This week, fifth graders will experience a mini-retreat required by the Diocese of Joliet. The retreat is called: Students on Retreat with Pope Francis – The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola in Daily Life. Students will compose a brief letter to Pope Francis sharing with him the graces they received this year. SCIENCE We have all enjoyed the ecosystem conservation PowerPoints and news skits group presentations! We will finish those creative and informative presentations this week. We will also conduct a small research project and STEM activity! Science rocks! SOCIAL STUDIES Part 3: Reconstruction Period We will cover the following topics this week: Abraham Lincoln’s Assassination, Reconstruction, Amendments XIII, XIV, and XV. The students will write a reflection of what they learned about the Civil War. MATH 6B- mean, median & mode; NO MATH QUIZ THIS WEEK 6A- ratios and proportions TEST ON TUESDAY

Let’s finish strong! Sixth graders have learned SO much

this year & worked so hard- I’m so excited to see them

flourish in junior high math. ☺

SOCIAL STUDIES

Sixth graders will finalize their Latin American Unit learning all about the Aztec and Inca early Civilizations. The students will be able to describe the encounter and consequences of the conflict between the Spanish, the Aztecs and Incas and the roles of Cortes, Montezuma, Pizarro, and Atahualpa.

LANGUAGE ARTS

*The 6th graders will complete their final project on The Outsiders this week! *We will also be watching the movie, The Outsiders, to wrap up our novel study! *Please remember to visit a library or Barnes & Noble over the summer! It’s very important to read, read, read! *Those students working on science fair over the summer will receive some information regarding their report. Mrs. Mesenbring will be in contact with you via email, so be on the lookout!
