5th Grade News Week of March 11, 2019
MATH 5A- This week we will continue to work with adding and subtracting fractions and will introduce working with mixed numbers. There will be a quiz this Friday. 5B- This week we are starting something new, we will focus on identifying rules and patterns. We will determine the relationship between different patterns. No quiz this week.
LANGUAGE ARTS
5A Reading – We will begin our class
novel, Out of My Mind, this week! The
students will complete an author
WebQuest, an activity which will
explain cerebral palsy (which is what
the main character has), and they will
be introduced to the new vocabulary
words.
5B Reading -This week we will be
staring a new novel! Our novel is
called Out of My Mind by Sharon
Draper. The story focuses on a young
girl and how she deals with her
disability. This week we will focus on
cerebral palsy, the author, and how to
communicate with others.
5English/Writing – The new spelling
pattern will be introduced today.
There will be a spelling test on
Thursday! In English, we will focus on
interjections and using the correct
punctuation for direct quotations.
There will be a grammar test on
Thursday.
RELIGION
We are starting chapter five this week. Our focus is on the sacraments of Baptism and becoming a member of the church. We will discuss Jesus’ baptism and how he gave us that Sacrament. We will continue to reflect in our lent journals. We will attend Stations of the Cross on Friday at 2:15, please join us!
SCIENCE
Last week, students learned
about our most important
star, the sun. This week, they
will also discover why the
closest stars may not always
be the brightest. We will
continue learning about
stars this week and also why
our planet has days, seasons,
and years.
SOCIAL STUDIES This week we are focusing on
the colonies declaring
independence. We will learn
about the Declaration of
Independence and how the
colonists started to choose sides.
We will also discuss Paul Revere
a read a story about his ride.

MATH
6A- This week, we will wrap up our fraction unit with multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers. Our next unit will focus on area of triangles, circles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. We will kick this off with a celebration of PI Day!
6B- This week, we will focus on adding and subtracting equations and solving them by finding the missing value. No quiz this week.
SOCIAL STUDIES
We will continue to learn
about Egypt this week – we
are focusing on Egypt’s
political structure and their
earliest uses of writing.
There will be a vocabulary
quiz over Lesson 2 on
Friday!
LANGUAGE ARTS
6A Reading - We finished our
novel last Friday! We will watch
the movie this week and compare
the novel to the movie. The
students also began a Power Point
project with a partner – they are
researching endangered animals
and will present it to the class.
6B Reading - We are still working
on or novel Hoot. This week we
are focusing on imagery,
environmental and legal issues,
comprehension, and vocabulary.
No quiz this week.
6English/Writing - We will
continue to work on grammar
edits each day to begin class. The
students will also continue to
work on note taking for their
biography writing. We are also
focusing on citing our sources.
RELIGION
The 6th graders are hosting mass on
Wednesday, so we will be practicing
on Monday during religion time.
We will be reading the Gospel
reading for this Sunday and
completing a journal entry in our
Lenten journals. The students will
read “Jesus Heals the Man Born
Blind” and research the Pharisees to
find out the role they played at the
time of Jesus. Join us for Stations of
the Cross on Friday at 2:15!
SCIENCE
The 6th graders will continue
to learn how Earth’s surface
and rock layers give us clues
about its history. They will be
given a study guide for a
Fossils/Relative Dating Test.
This test will take place next
week before spring break.
