Learn About It!

In the previous exercise, the words Klyde and They aresubjects. The words jumps and jump are verbs. The wordKlyde is a singular noun, and the word they is a pronoun inplural form.

The subject of a sentence and its verb must agree with oneanother in number. A singular subject requires a singularverb; a plural subject requires a plural verb.

In most cases, nouns (used as a subject) are added with “-s”or “-es” to express their plural form. On the other hand, inmost cases, verbs, with the subjects in third personsingular, are added with “-s” or “-es” to show their singularform.

Here are the detailed rules to follow:

1. A singular subject requires a singular verb. A plural subject requires a plural verb.

Joan writes neatly.

The subject Joan is singular; the verb writes is singular.

They play monopoly.

The subject they is plural; the verb play is plural.

There are exceptions to this rule. The pronouns I and you follow a different rule. Let uslook at the following examples:

Page 5: Grade 6 Unit 3: Verbs

I love the outcome of my experiment. You stay on the sidewalk.

The subjects in the given sentences, I and you, are both singular. However, thepronouns I and you are always paired with plural action verbs.

2. Compound subjects connected by and use a plural verb.

A compound subject is composed of two or more subjects. Since it is considered plural, the verb should follow the plural form.

Look at the following examples:

Aimee and Alfonso are going to the museum.

The compound subjects are Aimee and Alfonso. When there are two or more subjects, they are considered as plural, so the verb must also be in plural form.

Jess, Arnaldo, and Patrick run to the beach to play.

There are three compound subjects: Jess, Arnaldo, and Patrick. When there are two ormore subjects, they are considered as plural, so the verb must also be in plural form.

A car and a bike are my means of transportation.

The compound subjects are a car and a bike. When there are two or more subjects, theyare considered as plural, so the verb must also be in plural form.

3. Consider the subject closer to the verb of two or more subjects joined by or or nor.

Nonoy or Deng tries the water slide first.

The subject closer to the verb is Deng, which is singular. This should be followed by asingular verb. In this case, the verb tries is in singular form.

Neither Neil nor Harry enjoys the fun activity.

Page 6: Grade 6 Unit 3: Verbs

The subject closer to the verb is Harry, which is singular; the verb enjoys is in singularform.

Either her friend or her classmates send the flowers to Jenny to cheer her up.

The subject closer to the verb is classmates, which is plural pronoun. This means thatthe verb that follows it should be in plural form. In this case, the verb send is in pluralform.

4. If there is a phrase that comes between the subject and the verb, consider thesubject and not the noun or pronoun in the phrase.

One of them is a candidate for valedictorian.

Since the subject of the sentence in this example is one, the verb should follow itsnumber. The verb is follows the singular form.

The students who went home early are studious.

The subject of the sentence, the students, agrees with the verb are. They are both inplural form.

The president, as well as his staff, attends the meeting.

The subject of the sentence, the president, agrees with the verb attends. They are both insingular form.

The menu, including all the desserts in the first section, seems delicious.

The subject of the sentence, the menu, agrees with the verb seems. They are both insingular form.

5. Each, each one, either, neither, everyone, everybody, anybody, anyone, nobody, somebody, someone, and no one are all singular and require a singular verb.

Each of these dogs does tricks.

Page 7: Grade 6 Unit 3: Verbs

Each, as a singular subject, is the subject, and does, as a singular verb, is used. Although,“these” is a plural term, it is not the subject of the sentence.

Everybody recognizes him.

Everybody, as a singular subject, is the subject, and recognizes, as a singular verb, isused.

Everyone on the group is welcome to express his/her ideas.

Everyone, as a singular subject, is the subject, and is, as a singular verb, is used. Theverb, recognizes is with “s” since the subject is in third person.

6. Words such as mathematics, measles, physics, news, and the like are nouns that endwith s but are not considered plural. These nouns require singular verbs.

Mathematics is a fun subject.

The subject, mathematics, agrees with the verb is since they are both consideredsingular.

The news reports the winner of the competition.

The subject, the news, agrees with the verb reports since they are both consideredsingular.

Measles is a highly contagious disease.

The subject, measles, agrees with the verb is since they are both considered singular.

7. Words such as scissors, tweezers, trousers, shears, and the like are alwaysconsidered plural.

These scissors are sharp.

The subject, These scissors, agrees with the verb are since they are both consideredplural.

My pants are made of quality materials.

The subject, my pants, agrees with the verb are since they are both considered plural.

The trousers are short and of a peculiar cut and material.

The subject, trousers, agrees with the verb are since they are both considered plural.

8. The words here and there are not subjects. When a sentence starts with these words, the subject is placed after the verb.

There are many books about history.

The subject is many books, which is in plural form. Therefore, we use “There are” – theplural form of to be.

There is my notebook.

“There is” is used since the subject, notebook, is singular.

Here lies the great Juan Luna.

Juan Luna is the subject of the sentence therefore the verb lies is in singular form.

Here are the books you want me to look for.

The subject of the sentence is books. Therefore, the verb are agrees with its plural form.

9. Team, committee, class, and family and the like are collective nouns. In consideringcollective nouns as either singular or plural, you have to analyze how the verbs areused. If the group acts as one doing the same action, the subject is singular; if the groupacts individually doing different things, the subject is plural.

The team runs during practice.

The subject, team, is taken as singular with its verb runs. The collective noun isperforming the same action together at the same time.

Learn About It!

Verbs express not only action but also time. The timeelement in the verb is called tenses.

A verb is in past tense if the action happened in the past.It is in present tense if the action is currently happening. The verb is in future tense if the action will happen in thefuture.

Each of these tenses has four aspects: simple, perfect, progressive, and perfect-progressive.

The table below shows the meaning of each aspect ofthe past tense.

Aspect Simple Perfect ProgressivePerfect

ProgressiveMeaning The action

happened orwascompletedbefore now.

The actionstarted in thepast andcontinued up to agiven time in thepast.

This tenseindicatescontinuing action, which means thatthe action washappening atsome point in thepast.

The action is acontinuousaction thatstarted in thepast butcontinued onlyup to anotherpoint in thepast.

Irregular You have tochange thespelling of theverb.

Here are examples:

Simple

Last night, Ivy enjoyed reading the novel.

Enjoy is a regular verb. To change it to its past form, -ed should be added.

They wore beautiful dresses yesterday.

On the other hand, wear is an irregular verb. Changing the spelling will transform it to its pastform.

I received a letter last week.

Receive is a regular verb which means that -d should be added to transform it to its past form. All examples show action which has happened in the past.

Perfect

Ivy had enjoyed reading the novel before her brother came to play with her.

Based on the formula, past perfect tenses are formed by adding had + past participle form ofthe verb. Since enjoy is regular verb, the rule still applies for it.

Before they played with their friends, they had worn beautiful dresses.

Page 14: Grade 6 Unit 3: Verbs

Wear is an irregular verb and it has the same rule when it transforms to its past participle.

I had visited my relatives in Bicol before I decided to go to Cebu.

Receive is a regular verb. Therefore the rule for changing regular verb to past participleapplies.

In all examples, the sentences showcase a past action that has happened before another pastaction. Notice that the first past action is in the past perfect tense followed by the more recentpast action in the simple past tense.

Progressive

In the following examples, the form was/were + present participle is applied for progressivetense. In changing verbs to present participle, -ing is added to the base form of the verb.

Ivy was enjoying reading the novel until her brother came to surprise her.

All throughout the night, they were wearing beautiful dress.

I was singing with my relatives when my mother called me.

Perfect Progressive

In the following examples, perfect progressive tenses follow the form had + been + presentparticiple of the verb.
