Grade 2 Visual Arts eLearning Dear Students and Parents,
Please complete these visual arts lessons over the course of the next six weeks and turn them in as noted in each lesson. Assignments will be submitted via e-mail to [email protected]. Please be sure to include the student’s first and last name and their homebase teacher’s name in the subject line of the e-mail. Assignments submitted without names will not be graded.
Week 3: Learn about Still Lifes Week 4: Create a Still Life Week 5: Learn about Landscapes Week 6: Create a Landscape Week 7: Learn about Genre (depicts everyday life) Week 8: Create a Genre ASSIGNMENT TO TURN IN
You may find that you want or need to extend or change the project to suit your specific needs and situation. For example, if you do not have the materials suggested, please solve this problem creatively. What materials do you have that could work instead of the suggested ones? How will this change the project? Will the project be better, more unique, or have different qualities. I hope so! I’m hoping that these projects will be challenging and will incite creativity and curiosity.
There are two pages of student resources to be used with each pair of lessons (3-4, 5-6, 7-8) in this series. It will be helpful for an adult to read and review this information with students during each of the” Learn about” lessons (Week 3, 5, and 7).
If you find you have extra time, consider some of the following art activities to spark your creativity:
Projects: Design and create a game and play it with your family. Make a collage using old magazines. Create a sculpture out of recycled materials and found objects. Write and illustrate a story, poem, or comic strip/book. Design a treehouse or fort. Design shoes, hats, and clothing. Make observational drawings of the things around you. Create a visual journal that contains mostly pictures and a few words.

Student Resource for Weeks 3 and 4: Learn about Still Lifes
Many artists draw or paint still lifes. A still life (plural: still lifes) is a work of art depicting mostly
non-living subject matter. Most of the time the objects are commonplace objects which are
either natural (food, flowers, plants, rocks, shells, etc.) or man-made (drinking glasses, books,
vases, jewelry, coins, etc.). Here are a few still lifes for you to study. Look at the pictures and
discuss the questions in bold, blue print with an adult.
Laurie Breen is a contemporary artist. That means she is still
alive and painting today. This is her still life titled, Oranges
and Lemons. Lauri abstracts (or simplifies) her subject
matter and uses mostly primary colors. Look carefully at
the painting.

Henri Matisse painted this still life. He used everyday objects, bold
colors, and patterns. It is called, The Goldfish.
This is a still life by Roy Litchenstein. It is
called, Still Life with Palette. This style of art is
called Pop Art. Pop doesn’t stand for soda
pop, it stands for popular. Roy used
references to popular culture in his art. He
used stencils to make his work look like it was
printed with a machine like newspapers and
comic books were printed
DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS WHILE STUDYING THE ARTWORK ABOVE:
What is the subject matter? What objects do you see?
What colors, lines, and patterns do you see?
What media (materials like paint, pencil and clay) were used?
What techniques (i.e. painting, drawing, and collage) were used?
What is the mood of the painting, how does this still life make you feel?

Artists create still lifes in different ways. They use different media (materials) and they use
different techniques (the way the media is used). Here are a few examples.

DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS WHILE STUDYING THE ARTWORK ABOVE:
Look at each work of art and read each caption. How do you think each piece of art
was made?
What is the subject matter of each image? What objects are in each image?
Two still lifes are show from different points of view (worm’s and bird’s). How does this
change the still life? What would it look like if it was not shown from this point of view?
Which still life is your favorite? Why do you like this one?
Which still life is your least favorite? Why do you like this one least?
What objects would you want to include in a still life? Why would you include these
objects? Would the objects have special meaning to you?

Grade 2 Visual Arts Activity: Create a Still Life – Select a number of items that you can
find around your home. Set them out on a table so that they form an interesting arrangement or composition. Create a drawing, painting, collage, or photograph of a still
life based on your arrangement of objects. I Can Statements

_______ Activity 1: Collect and Display an Assortment of Objects – Select a number of
items that you find around your home. Set them on a table so that they form an interesting arrangement or composition. What items will you choose? Will the objects have special meaning? Will they tell the viewer something about yourself, your family, or your community? Consider the surface of your table. Do you want to leave it bare or do you want to drape it with cloth? Consider what you want in your background. Will you leave the background bland, or will you include a background with a window or wall with wall paper or a picture on it? These are choices that you will make as an artist. Be creative with your table top, background, and arrangement. _______ Activity 2: Create a Still Life: – Review the Student Resources for this lesson.
Decide how you want to create your still life. Will you draw, paint, collage, or photograph it. Next think about the point of view. Will you look at it from the top, bottom, or side? Create your still life. Your still life can include line, shapes, color, and patterns. Remember that it does not have to be “perfect.” It can be abstract with simplified shapes, it can be a contour line drawing, or it can be realistic. These choices are yours! _______Activity 3: Submitting Your Assignment: – Take a photograph of your still life and submit it to me online at [email protected] for a grade. Student Resource for Weeks 5 and 6: Learn about Landscapes
Many artists draw or paint landscapes. A landscape is a work of art that depicts nature and
the land such as the ocean, mountains, trees and sky. Here are a few landscapes for you to
study. Look at the pictures and discuss the questions in bold, blue print with an adult.
Vincent van Gogh created this painting titled,
Starry Night. Van Gogh was an impressionist
painter and used his brushstrokes to add
texture to his artwork He studied the effects of
light on his subject matter.
This is a landscape photograph by Ansel Adams titled,
Half Dome Winter Yosemite. Ansel Adams is best
known for his black and white nature and landscape
photographs.
This painting by Georgia O’Keeffe it titled,
Reflective Seascape. O’Keeffe simplifies her
shapes, lines, and colors to create her
composition.
In Breakiwaters at Seaford, artist, John Piper sketches
with ink on a torn and ripped collage to evoke a sense
of winter wind and waves.
DISCUSS THESE QUESTIONS WHILE STUDYING THE ARTWORK ABOVE:
What is the subject matter? What landforms do you see?
What is the season? What is the time of day? Explain your answers
How does the artist use colors, lines, patterns, and texture?
What media (materials like paint, pencil and clay) were used?

_______ Activity 1: Choose your Subject Matter – Your task is to create a landscape. You
will need to choose where you want your landscape to be. Will it be in the forest, on a plain, in the dessert, in the jungle, or in the city (Cityscapes are appropriate.). What will the season be: summer, fall, spring, or winter? How will you illustrate the season in your artwork. What time of day will it be: in the dawn, morning, noon, dusk, or at night? What man-made objects will you include in your landscape: a house, bridge, tower, skyscrapers, airplanes, power lines? Look through some magazines, books, and online (with help from an adult) to find images that can help you see what these places actually look like. _______ Activity 2: Create a Landscape: – Review the Student Resources for this lesson. Decide how you want to create your landscape. Will you draw, paint, or collage it. Create your landscape. Your landscape can include line, shapes, color, patterns, and textures. Student Resource for Weeks 7 and 8: Learn about Genre (the art of everyday life events)
In this lesson the word genre will be used. It will be a little confusing, because, in art the word
genre means two different things. Genre can mean type of – for example, type of literature
(fiction, fantasy, informational text) or type of art (portrait, landscape, still life). In art, genre
can also mean art depicting everyday events and occurrences (dancing, studying, cooking,
reading, playing basketball, etc.). So, we will be studying the genre of genre. Confusing, right?
Here are a few genre artworks for you to study. Look at the pictures and discuss the questions
in bold, blue print with an adult.
This painting is titled, Argument over a Card Game
and is classified as a genre painting. It was painted
a very long time ago and portrays two men
arguing over a game. Do people still argue over
games today? What might that look like?

William Tanner painted this picture titeld, The Banjo
Lesson. It shows a seated man teaching a young
boy to play the banjo. What types of things do adults
teach children today?
This is a painting titled, Goin’ to Church. It
depicts a family heading to church. We
usually don’t ride in a horse and buggy
anymore, but it was a common occurrence
when Henry Johnson painted this picture.

Artists create genre art in different ways. They use different media (materials) and they use
different techniques (the way the media is used). Here are a few examples.

It should tell a story about something that many people do. Choose your media; you can use pencil, pen, crayons, oil pastels, paint, and/or collage. Be sure to think about what you want to include in your background. Look at the student resource again before you start your artwork. this lesson. Decide how you want to create your genre artwork. Will you draw, paint, or collage it.
