Rhythm is patterns of long and short periods of both sound and silence. In this tutorial you will learn how to read, perform, and identify three different rhythms: the quarter note, the quarter note rest, and an eighth note pair.

2

qQuarter NoteTaThis is a quarter note. A quarter note is equal to one beat. When we see a quarter note we will say ta.

3

qqqqtatatata

Each one of these lines represents one beat. Notice how the sound of each quarter note is equal to one beat. 4

QQuarter Note RestShThis is a quarter note rest. The quarter note rest is equal to one beat of silence. Normally there would be no sound on the beat. We are going to say sh to help us remember that the beat is silent. 5
