Introduction

Motive•The project was driven by the need to enhance, organize, simplify and speed up GPON migration activities taking place all over UAEApproach•Reduce the number of customer visits as much as possible•Try automate what ever can be automated•Utilize existing green areas automation solution and IT systems•Maintain good records and neat data to track and organize the activitiesExpected Results•Increase customer satisfaction and maintain customer loyalty•Reduce migration time•Reduce OPEX

Solution Overview

•Technician visiting the customer will have a laptop facilitated with 3.5G USB modems and bar code readers.•Technician will access internet then Etisalat’s Extranet then PMS*•Technician will enter the customer details into PMS•Service will be activated automatically

*PMS stands for Provisioning Management System. It is a web based application developed in house by CIT. It is handling the automation of service provisioning of Etisalat’s fixed network.

Current Practice

1. Infrastructure Installation at the customer premises (fiber cables, ducts, OTN, etc….) done by CST or contractor.

2. Gather the customer information from CBCM and the customer then prepare the data in excel files then send to ISO.

3. ISO to configure the services manually on NMS.4. CST staff to migrate the services to the ONT and test the service.5. CST staff to call ISO to configure soft switch and call forwarding6. CST staff to test and confirm the service

Page 6: GPON Migration Tool

New Practice

• Scenario I (buildings already having ONTs and cabling done by contractor)1. Gather customer information from CBCM2. Visit the customer. Confirm the service data with customer.

Configure the services using the tool. Test the services. Confirm the migration using the tool.

• Scenario II(buildings not yet installed with ONTs)1. Gather customer information from CBCM2. Visit the customer. Confirm the service data with customer. Configure the services using the

tool. 3. Install ONT and complete the structure cabling and the TV, PC and telephone connections4. Test the services then confirm the migration using the tool.

Pre-Migration Configuration

One time configuration for brown area building* in IT systems.• GIS:

– Generate EID for the targeted building• LOCNET:

– Update EID, building and flat details• PMS:

– Configure OLT, GIDs, splitters and EIDs

*Exactly the same configuration required to launch the automation for a green area building

User Input

The tool requires the following data input from the user:• Branch• EID (the EID generated by GIS and configured in PMS for this

building)• Splitter ID (based on the fiber coming from the flat)• Splitter port (based on the fiber coming from the flat)• ONT Type (OT550 or HG851)• ONT SN (can be scanned by bar code reader)• Flat/Villa #• ODF D-side port # (if no ODF used, splitter port # to be entered)• Service Account numbers against ONT ports

Automated Actions

The tool performs two sets of automated actions.• SET 1: triggered upon creating the service by the technician.

Includes the following:– Validate the account numbers in CBCM– Configure the service in the GPON network (OLT/ONT)– Configure phone # in Soft Switch with basic configuration (in case of

POTS only)• Set 2: triggered upon confirming the service.

Include the following:– Service details will be updated in PMS, CBCM and LOCNET.– Task will be scheduled in PMS to release the legacy resources after

three days.– Supplementary services (VAS) will be activated in SS (voice only)– Call forwarding (number portability) will be configured in TDM

network.

Handling Activation Rejections

• Upon creating the service through the tool there is a chance of failure due to human or system errors. In such cases technicians need to escalate the issue to ISO section.

• ISO team will have an exclusive access on a menu called “NE-Rejections” where they can do one of the following:– Re-execute: the same commands will be sent again to the NMS for

activation.– Manual Action: the transaction will be forcefully declared successful

in PMS. Technician needs to do the configuration manually in NMS
