SILENT DAY

On Tuesday, We had a very successful “We are Silent” day. Our grade 1/2 class were very serious and worked so hard to practice being silent for half an hour. I know it doesn't seem like much but if you met this group you would have been so proud. We watched some video's discussing the meaning of why we do this. Unfortunately we did not raise funds but I do think the impact was beneficial for our students. Thanks, Rvyr

On 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, we remember the soldiers that fought at war to bring peace. We had a Remembrance Day assembly to honour the soldiers. Every division made one wreath and each class went on stage to either sing a song, read poems or script about peace. Everybody was wearing a red poppy.

Nobody was allowed to clap or smile at the assembly because it was a sad moment to remember. Everybody was wearing red, black and white. At the end of the ceremony we stood up and had our one minute of silence. Rob played the “last post” and at the end Rob played the “Rouse”. We also donated some money.

2016 – 2017KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Kindergarten registration gets going district wide between November 2, 2015 and January 31 2016 for children born in 2011 and that will begin school September 2016. The Vancouver School Board is proud to offer excellent instruction at all of our schools including a wide range of educational options for all different types of learners. We encourage families to get to know more about your catchment school and what they have to offer your child. Registration at your English catchment school is required even if you plan to register your child in a choice program.

So how do I register? The first step starting November 2, 2015, is to register at your English catchment school - regardless of whether you plan to send your child there. You can discover where your English catchment school is by going to http://www.vsb.bc.ca/schools and clicking on the “School Location Search by Street Number” link.

If your child was born outside of Canada, you need to head to the VSB District Reception and Placement Centre (DRPC) located at Moberly Elementary, 1000 East 59th Ave. Ph. 604-713-5999 and complete the initial Kindergarten application there. If your English catchment school is over-subscribed by January 31st, there will be a draw for Kindergarten placements. Students not offered a spot will be placed on an ordered wait list and provided with an alternative placement option.

Information about applying for Kindergarten: There are many Choice Programs offered by the Vancouver School board, including French Immersion, Mandarin Bilingual, Fine Arts, Montessori, International Baccalaureate and Aboriginal Focus programs. Apply online at http://kchoice.vsb.bc.ca The online application process opens in mid-January and closes in early February. A draw will be used when there are more applicants than available spaces in a Choice Program. You will receive notification of your child’s application status (offer of placement or position on waitlist) by the end of February.

Applying to attend a school in another catchment area? If you are planning to apply for a school in another catchment area, you will need to drop off a completed cross boundary application form at the requested school between February 1 and February 29th. You will receive notification of your child’s application status (offer of placement or position on waitlist) by March 31st. You must still register at your home school catchment.

You can get more information about all of our Kindergarten Programs and processes on our website: www.vsb bc.ca/kindergarten or you can always contact your neighbourhood English catchment school.

L.O.V.E. GROUP

Hello from the L.O.V.E. Group: We have had a busy month just starting to plan some exciting events for our school. As you know, we had a vote as to what global community we wanted to support this year. The kids decided they would like to raise money for health care for Kenya.

We have some exciting events for planned for December. As of December 1st we will be starting our annual “Food Bank Drive”. We hope to collect at least 10 boxes of food this year and hopefully some cash too. Every dollar you donate equals 3 cans of food. We will be having a class contest to see which class can raise the most cans. All proceed will be donated on December 16th to our local food bank. Please help us to help the less fortunate in our city. Thanks.

One other idea we wanted to try this year was a “Sock Drive”. This is a campaign where we donate socks to the homeless. We want kids to start bringing in brand new socks to donate. It can be kids or adult socks. One of the biggest problems for homeless people is foot sores. Their feet get wet and create problems for them. This year our hope is to collect 100 – 200 pairs of socks for the homeless. There will be boxes you can drop your donations in. Please support our “Sock Drive”.

Our group will also be hosting the Gingerbread House Raffle again this year. We will start raffling tickets on December 3rd. All proceeds will go for donations to “Free the Children” or “Our Global Campaign”. Tickets will be 1 for 50 cents or 3 for a dollar. I hope you can participate. The raffle will be drawn at our winter assembly on Friday, December 18, 2015.

Lastly, we are having a School Spirit Day on Friday, December 11th. Please wear your pyjamas to school. Bring your teddies and let’s have hot chocolate and stories together. I can’t wait. We’ll be giving you more information closer to the date.

Thanks, Ryvr

SCHOOL CLOSURE DUE TO BAD WEATHER

As winter weather approaches, we want to remind parents/guardians, students, and staff of the Vancouver School District’s winter weather procedures and announcements.

All schools in the Vancouver School District will remain OPEN if at all possible during winter weather, including snowfalls. Any district-wide closure will be decided by 7:00 a.m. at the latest and will be announced through the media as well as through the District and school websites. Please note that no announcement will be made stating that schools are open. Only closures and delayed openings will be announced.

Information about any district-wide closures will be sent to Metro Vancouver radio and television stations. Please check the following stations for school closure information:

Radio TelevisionCBC AM 690 radio, 88.1 FM Global BCCKNW AM 980 radio CBC TVNews AM 1130 radio CTV BCFairchild AM 1470 radio City TV

Announcements of school closures or delayed openings will be posted on the School District’s website. Individual school closures due to unique circumstances (e.g., power outages) will be announced as early as possible on the District website as well as on the affected schools’ websites. On occasion, schools may delay the start of the school day; if this happens, specific details will be posted on the school and District websites.

During extreme weather conditions it is also common for police and other authorities to advise citizens to avoid unnecessary travel. Parents should take this advice as well. Students will not be penalized for lack of attendance under such poor weather conditions. This is also a reminder to all students to dress warmly and wear appropriate clothing. Sidewalks and roads can be extremely slippery and so students walking to school are advised to take extra care.

With your cooperation and adherence to winter weather procedures, we can help achieve safe conditions for students travelling to and from school. Please put safety first.

DIVISION 3

The grade 4s in Division 3 are learning about weather. We made rain gauges out of 2 litre pop bottles. Rain gauges are used to measure rain fall. We put marbles inside our rain gauges to keep them on the ground. We put rulers on the outside of the bottles to measure how much rain falls inside the bottle. When we finished making the rain gauges, we added water to the 0 mark on the rulers. We can’t wait until it rains again to try out our new rain gauges.
