Dear Parents/Carers Friday 9 September 2011 Election of Three Governors to the Governing Body of Honley High School I am writing to inform you that following the cessation of the terms of office of two members of the Governing Body and changes to the school’s Instrument of Governance we currently have vacancies for three Parent Governors. The Governing Body of a school is expected to: Provide a strategic view for the school; Act as a critical friend to the school; Ensure accountability in the school. It sets the vision and strategic aims, agrees plans and policies, makes creative use of available resources, monitors and evaluates performance and ensures the school is accountable to children, parents, the local community, staff and other partners. The Governing Body of Honley High School has a well-deserved reputation for the quality of its work and I am keen that this continues and the posts are filled as quickly as possible. I propose to hold an election of Parent Governors to serve a period of four years. The reverse side of this letter is the nomination form and contains all relevant details. If you are interested in becoming a Governor at school and taking the opportunity to have a real say in its future development, please also write a short statement of not more than 100 words to be published on the ballot papers, including your reasons for wishing to join the Governing Body and outlining any areas of expertise which you could bring to it. The school is particularly interested in recruiting Governors with a background or expertise in finance. Nominations should be received by me personally by 3.15pm on Monday 19 September 2011. If more than the required number of candidates are nominated, ballot papers will be sent to parents on Wednesday 21 September 2011. I shall let you know the result of the election in due course. I am the Returning Officer for the election of Parent Governors. For the purposes of an election, “parent” means any person with parental responsibility as defined in the Children Act 1989. To stand, propose, support or vote in the election a parent must be the parent of a student on roll at the school at the date of election. Within a family each parent may vote but parents do not have extra votes if they have more than one child at the school. Please note that a Governor must be 18 or over at the time of the election and must complete a CRB disclosure application form. The full details of disqualifications which apply to the role of School Governor are to be found in the current School Governance (Procedures) Regulations. Staff in the School Governor Service at Room 16, The Deighton Centre, will be happy to advise on disqualification if need be (tel 01484 225010). I look forward to hearing from you.
