Former GHS student, Ellen Ryan, the new Under 25s Open
Singles World Champion in Bowls
Ellen travelled to England for 20 days to attend the World
Professional Indoor Bowls Championships and returned with a
wonderful trophy, saying ‘usually I only get medals’, as she laughed.
2017 started as a very successful year for Ellen, who began to play
bowls 11 years ago ‘just for fun’ at our own Goulburn Railway
Bowling Club. She recently moved to the Cabramatta Club where
she receives support and mentorship from Karen Murphy, another
player at Cabramatta and a fellow competitor. Ellen recalls that ‘it
was a real eye opener to be the only girl in the competition and watch
all the top players from England and Scotland’. Congratulations,
Ellen, GHS is very proud of you.
Principal’s Report
Since this is my first Principal’s Report for 2017, I
would like to welcome staff, students and our parent
community to Goulburn High School.
I am very excited about the year ahead and what
students will learn, the skills and talents that will be
further developed by being a student at Goulburn High,
the experiences that they will participate in and share,
not only with each other but with staff, and the working
relationships that will develop between class mates and teachers.
Goulburn High School is a full uniform school. As our local high school, we are preparing
students to effectively engage and participate in life outside. All areas of work have ‘dress
codes or requirements’ across the full range of possible careers. Students who are already
participating in part time work realise this. Attending Goulburn High School is no different.
Our uniform shop is open Mondays and Thursdays and has our full range of school and sports
uniforms in stock.
Last Friday was our Swimming Carnival and it was exceptionally warm. The highest
temperature recorded on the day was 39 C. Students were reminded to wear their house
colours, wear a hat, sunscreen and adequate clothing, and to remain hydrated throughout the
day. After a few difficulties with the 50m pool’s pump, the competitions and activities began
in earnest. More on that on page seven in the Sports Report.
I will take this opportunity to make parents aware of our General School Contributions that
will be used for the replacement/purchase of teaching resources such as text books and elective
fees that cover elective subject materials for those students that are undertaking elective
subjects from year 9 through to year 12.
Last but not least, Goulburn High is a Positive Behaviour for Learning school, and has as our
three core values, Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. These three values are what will
drive student learning so that Goulburn High will develop young people that the Goulburn
community can be proud of. Paul Hogan
Last August, I went to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with the rest of my year
and two other schools.
Before the orchestra started playing, we were introduced to the musicians by
the conductor, who showed us all the instrument families and explained them
to us. After that we listened to the orchestra play an wonderful composition.
The music really was amazing. It makes you think of how much practice the
musicians put into it, with all the perfect timing and harmony ... it could give
you goose bumps.
The next time I had Music, our teacher explained that the class had to write an
essay about the orchestra and that we would have the chance, if one of us wins,
for it to be published in the ActewAGL magazine and to win tickets for another
performance by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. I honestly thought I had no
chance, but I did it anyway of course, only to find out a few months later that I
had won!
It really was a shock, and I’m definitely glad I entered and I hope they have it
again for the new year 7’s this year. It was a fantastic experience and who
knows, you might just win as well. Brooke Hudd
Goulburn High School teacher, Ash Kara, is the new

They won all three games 7—5, 11—8 and 11—10. Congratulations to Ms Kara and her
team. Ms Kara is pictured with Jessica Potts from Newcastle and Aaron More from
Brisbane, the two team captains.

Swimming Carnival 2017
Lumsden win!!! Again……
On Friday the 10th of February Goulburn High School held their annual swimming carnival. We were greeted
by an extremely hot day with temperatures reaching 39 degrees.
During the morning a pool malfunction delayed the start to the carnival as engineers worked on getting our
students into the pool. During this time, students were fantastic, participating in volleyball, novelty
activities and the Ironman/Ironwoman competition.
Around 11 o’clock we were in the pool. The amazing talent of many of our students was again on full
display with many students breaking personal bests on the day. After the competitive events, we concluded
the day with a brief house novelty competition in the pool. Unfortunately, due to time constraints and
losing time in the morning, we were unable to hold relays and the belly flop competition.
All students are to be congratulated on their outstanding behaviour and participation.
Our age champions for the carnival were:
12 years Tilly Stewart and Buster Strickland
13 years Gemma Holland and Connor Primmer
14 years Emily Madden and Lachlan Handley
15 years Emily Hunter and Zane Wild
16 years Janice Barry and Brandyn Law/Cooper Doggett
17+ years Natasha Dawson and Ryan Goad
Congratulations to these students!
The House Championship was run and won, with Lumsden continuing their recent domination to again take
out the Swimming Carnival. The points were:
Lumsden 877
Knopp 623
Southwell 462
Taylor 255
Congratulations to all students in Lumsden house!
The Zone Carnival will be held on Thursday the 23nd of February at Queanbeyan Swimming Pool. Students
who qualified first or second in an event will receive a note to compete.

Inspirational quote : “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've
been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And
that is why I succeed”. – Michael Jordan
GENERAL SPORT NEWS
Welcome to 2017 and what will hopefully be a successful and enjoyable year ahead in sport. We have a busy
schedule ahead of us this year with weekly sport, CHS trials, CHS knockouts and the Cross Country Carnival this
term as well.
Yearly Sport: It is a compulsory requirement that all students in Years 7-11 participate in structured sports
activities. Students are reminded to be prepared by bringing the correct uniform for their sport lessons. Each Year
has different timetabled periods so it is a requirement that students understand when they have sport.
South Coast Trials are held throughout the year. Students will be notified at assemblies, in daily notices and on the
PE noticeboard. Students must enter their name with the sports organiser by the cut-off date to gain a place in
these selections. All interested students must see Mr. Russell.

Another successful year at Goulburn High has flown by and here we are in 2017. The P&C would like to
extend a warm welcome to our new principal Mr Paul Hogan, our incoming year 7 students and families
and to all our other new students and families to our school. We look forward to working together and
are sure you will find your time here at Goulburn High School enjoyable.
The uniform shop is back in full swing and has been extremely busy over the school holiday period. I
understand how extreme the weather has been lately, although going off last year there were some
winter items (jackets) that seemed to sell out very quickly and become unavailable. Maybe it would be a
good time to think of this now before it becomes too cold, as we know it will!
Our meetings are held the second Wednesday night of the month during school terms. These meetings
are always advertised through Skoolbag and the external school notice board. This year we have only 7
meetings and I have listed our dates below. The meetings are friendly and definitely a great place to be
if you would like to stay up to date with changes at school and your child’s learning. Of course we would
also love to see new faces and you will not be pressured into taking on executive roles.
Goulburn High School utilises the SKOOLBAG APP for smartphones. Important information,
newsletters and general reminders will be published through this regularly.
Once again welcome to all our new faces around the school. If anyone has any concerns, questions or
requests they can always contact me through the school.

Deputy Principals’ Report
Welcome back
Welcome to all our new students and families and welcome
back to our returning students and families. We are looking
forward to working with all of you to ensure that we provide
the best learning environment to cater for the needs of all the
students. Mr Mani will be responsible for years 8, 10, 12 and
Mrs Reece will be responsible for years 7, 9, and 11. This
report will be on behalf of both Deputy Principals.
Uniform
Our students started the year looking fantastic in their uniforms and most students are in
correct footwear. A reminder that students must be in plain black enclosed polishable leather
shoes with plain white socks. Our uniform shop opened during the holidays and has been a
great success. The quality of the uniform is excellent with a large variety of sizes and
options. The uniform shop has a percentage of sales going back to our P and C.
Mobile technology
At Goulburn High students are only permitted to use mobile technology if they have
sought the permission of the class teacher. Students are not permitted to receive phone calls
in class. If you need to contact your child, please call the front office. Although the school
provides awareness programs to students on a regular basis, we would encourage parents to
get advice and support related to the use of technology from the following website http://
www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/technology to help raise awareness and counter the
inappropriate use of technology by their child.
Communication
Goulburn High School has been expanding our communications with parents and carers
through our school app, parent portal, school webpage, Facebook and Twitter feeds. An
integral part of clear communications is that we have correct contact and emergency
information. For some of our students, this information may be five or more years old. In
some cases, students have only one contact number available for use. In an emergency, it is
important to be able to call parents, carers or failing that, emergency contacts. A change of
details can be made in our school app or parent portal or using a form at the front office.
Please let us know of any changes to your contact and emergency information.

University of Wollongong Discovery Day – 7th February 2017
Forty Year 12 students, Mrs McLean and Mrs Kennedy headed to Wollongong at 7am for the annual visit
to Wollongong University for Discovery Day. In November last year students chose their lectures and
tutorials covering a range of topics from specific courses and faculties, scholarships, accommodation,
international study and much more. Upon arrival students received their timetables and then joined 1000
fellow students in the great hall to hear reflections and advice of a 4th Year student who is in the last year
of his studies. Students attended four timetables sessions throughout the day, breaking for lunch at the
Duck Pond with a DJ. We are all very grateful to UOW for funding the bus and for providing students with
an invaluable insight into university life.
Important date for those interested to enter the
police force:

If you are unsure which calculator would be suitable then it is recommended that they be purchased
from the school canteen.
