    Gothic ArchitectureGothic Architecture Gothic architecture is a style of architecture

    which flourished during the late medieval

    period. It evolved from Romanesque architecture

    and was succeeded by Renaissancearchitecture.

    Originated in 12th-century France and lastinginto the 16th century.

    Can be used to roof rectangular andirregularly shaped plans such as trapezoids.

    Channels the weight onto the columns at asteep angle. This enabled architects to raisevaults much higher than was possible inRomanesque architecture.

    Flying ButtressesFlying Buttresses In roman style, walls were solidly massive and

    supported the continuous vaults.

    But gothics invented flying buttresses, whichthey placed at right angles to the length ofthe wall to take the collected pressure of theribbed vaults and finally transmitting to

    ground. The walls reduced to thin layer only to enclose

    the superstructure.

    Chhatrapati Shivaji TerminusChhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

    Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST), a railway station, is abrilliant specimen of the Victorian Gothic style of architecture inIndia.

    Designed by Frederick William Stevens, built in 1888, turned outto be the icon of Bombay as the 'Gothic City' .

    During its construction, British architects worked with the Indiancraftsmen, exchanging notes to give a new look and style toBombay.

    The station is positioned on the suburban railway tracks ofMumbai, one of the busiest railway stations in the country.

    Chhatrapati Shivaji TerminusChhatrapati Shivaji Terminus

    CST also serves as the headquarters of the Central Railways ofIndia.

    Attributable to its wonderful structural design, CST was

    acknowledged as a 'World Heritage Site' by UNESCO in 2004. Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus represents an excellent fusion of

    two cultures.

    Victoria Terminus boasts of spectacular stone dome, turrets,pointed arches and unusual ground plan, unlike the traditional

    Indian architecture. It has fine interiors, like wood carving, tiles, ornamental iron,

    brass railings, etc.

    Hotel Taj MahalHotel Taj Mahal

    The original Indian architects were Sitaram Khanderao Vaidyaand D N Mirza, but the project was completed by the Englishengineer W A Chambers.

    Showcases contemporary Indian influences along with beautifulvaulted alabaster ceilings, columns, graceful pointed archways.

    The hotel has two wings, the original The Taj Mahal Hotel (OldWing) and the newer Tower (Multi Storied structure).

    With its arched balconies topped by a jagged diadem, the new

    wing stands in harmonious contrast to the Heritage building. Constructed of yellow basalt and reinforced concrete, the grand

    arch borrows details from 16th century Islamic architecture

    High Court CalcuttaHigh Court Calcutta

    The court is headquartered in Kolkata, capital of WestBengal.

    The oldest High Court in India, established on July 2,1862.

    It is an exact replica of the Stand Hans in Ypres,Belgium.

    Designed by Sir William Emerson, Built in 19thCentury.

    The plan consists of a Nave ( 40 feet wide and 130feet long).

    Narrow aisles giving a total internal width of about 56feet.

    Two Transepts on the North and South respectively, a

    central tower at the intersection of the Nave.

    The two Western Towers with Spires could not becompleted.
