SHP is a moderate, above-the-politics organization that supports sensible non-policy and policy solutions that protect children and prevent gun violence. GOTHAM CLASSICPUNCH YOUR TICKET: Sixteen of the 22 teams that have competed in the first four Gotham Classics went on to earn postseason bids that March with eight of those teams going to the NCAA Tournament. Last season, Pittsburgh reached the NCAA Tournament, Davidson earned an NIT bid, and Eastern Washington, Morehead State, and Western Carolina each garnered CBI bids with Morehead State reaching the Championship Series. In 2014, West Virginia and NC State, who squared off in one of the Showcase Round games, each advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. In 2013, Ohio State, which won the Showcase Game, as well as North Dakota State and Delaware received NCAA tickets. In 2012, Syracuse and Temple both went to the NCAAs with the Orange advancing to the Final Four.

POINTS-A-PLENTY: The 2015 Gotham Classic was indeed a high scoring affair. In the nine games played (Morehead State at Eastern Washington was canceled due to weather-related travel issues. Those two teams rescheduled the game for Dec. 13 this year but not as part of the Gotham Classic.) teams combined to score an average of 150.4 points in each game. That surpasses the previous high of 146.0 points per game set in 2013. And that 2013 average was greatly enhanced by Bryant’s 108-107 overtime win against Delaware. Eight teams scored at least 80 points in a game in 2015, two of those coming in losses (86, Eastern Washington vs. Davidson; 80, Eastern Washington vs. Western Carolina). Anderson, who started 11 games in the back court…they are joined by a seven-member, consensus Top 30 recruiting class – tops in the Atlantic 10 – in 2016-17.

Thursday, December 8AMHERST, Mass. – UMass used the long-range jumper to capture a 72-48 victory over Pacific in the first game of the fifth annual Gotham Classic at the Mullins Center. The Minutemen made 25 field goals in the game, 14 of which came from behind the 3-point arc. For the game, Massachusetts was 14-of-36 from three (both Gotham Classic records) and 11-of-19 from inside the arc in improving to 6-2 on the year. Donte Clark led UMass with 12 points. Luwane Pipkins netted nine points and the nation’s leader in steals added three to his total. C.J. Anderson, Malik Hines, and Seth Berger tallied eight points each, and Dejon Jarreau had six points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Pacific, which falls to 3-5, was paced by Ray Bowles and Jack Williams, each of whom scored 11 points.

Saturday, December 10STOCKTON, Calif. – Kahlil Thomas posted 17 points and 14 rebounds and Rider held off a late Pacific rally to capture a 73-66 win in the fifth annual Gotham Classic. The road win for the Broncs marked just the seventh time in 31 tournament games that the road team earned a win. The victory improved Rider’s record to 5-3 on the season. Thomas was joined in double figures by Jimmie Taylor, who netted 14 points, and Stevie Jordan, who had 12 points and six assists. Pacific (3-6) was led by Ray Bowles and his 21 points and six rebounds. T.J. Wallace had 12 points and six assists, David Taylor scored 11 points, and Anthony Townes recorded 11 points and 12 rebounds. Defensively, the Broncs limited Pacific to just 22-of-70 shooting from the field.

Tuesday, December 13AMHERST, Mass. – Donte Clark scored 22 points and handed out six assist as UMass outlasted North Carolina A&T, 65-59, in the Gotham Classic. NC A&T jumped out to a 20-3 lead to start the game before the Minutemen put together a 19-2 run to close the first half trailing 31-30. The Aggies maintained their lead until Zach Lewis’ layup with 6:02 remaining gave UMass a temporary 52-51 lead. Davaris McGowens scored on a layup 41 seconds later to put NC A&T up 53-52. Then with 4:27 to go, Luwane Pipkins nailed a 3-pointer to give the Minutemen a 55-53 lead they would not relinquish. Pipkins ended the game with 11 points and five assists. C.J. Anderson added nine points and eight rebounds as UMass improved to 7-3 on the season. NC A&T (1-8) received 16 points from Sam Hunt, 12 points from Raymon Pratt, 11 points and eight rebounds from McGowens, and 10 points and six assists from Eliel Gonzalez.

Wednesday, December 14LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Kahlil Thomas blocked a Kendrick Ray layup with one second to play as Rider held on to defeat Kennesaw State, 81-79, in the Gotham Classic. In a game that was close throughout, it came down to free throw shooting. Neither team shot well from the line with Rider going 9-of-21 (.429) and Kennesaw State going 3-of-8 (.375). The Owls shot 55 percent from the field (33-of-60) but made just two more field goals than the Broncs (31-of-71). Both teams had 10 3-pointers. Jimmie Taylor led all scorers with 26 points for Rider (6-3). The Broncs also received 17 points and 10 rebounds from Norville Carey and Thomas ended the game with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Nick Masterson led Kennesaw State (3-7) with 19 points. Ray had 18, Johannes Nielsen added 16 points and six rebounds, James Scott scored 14 points, and Aubrey Williams posted eight points and 12 rebounds.

Thursday, December 15STOCKTON, Calif. – Anthony Townes recorded 18 points and eight rebounds a Pacific fought off a game North Carolina A&T, 66-57, in the Gotham Classic. Jacob Lumpkin posted 11 points and 11 rebounds for Pacific (4-6), which also received 15 points from T.J. Wallace. After Jack Williams scored on a layup to give Pacific a 52-45 lead with 4:23 to go, the Tigers did not attempt a field goal the rest of the way as their final 14 points came from the foul line, going 14-of-15 down the stretch. NC A&T (1-9) was paced by the 15-point effort of Sam Hunt. Raymon Pratt netted 14 points and Eliel Gonzalez added 11 points.

Saturday, December 17AMHERST, Mass. – Luwane Pipkins tallied 27 points and UMass shot 38-of-73 from the field to defeat Kennesaw State at a snowy Mullins Center. Pipkins and Kennesaw State’s Kendrick Ray battled it out on the scoreboard as Ray netted 35 points for the Owls. However, Pipkins received more help as DeJon Jarreau scored 17 points, Rashaan Holloway scored 14 points, Donte Clark posted 11 points and six assists, and Tyrn Flowers had 10 points. As a team, the Minutemen (8-3) were 12-of-24 from three and 7-of-9 from the foul line. Ray, whose 35 points were six shy of the Gotham Classic record, was 11-of-17 from the field, 4-of-8 from three, and 9-of-9 from the foul line. He was joined in double figures by Aubrey Williams, who had 14 points and nine rebounds. The Owls fell to 3-8 on the season.

Sunday, December 18GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kahlil Thomas’ put back with eight seconds left gave Rider a 60-59 win at North Carolina A&T in the Gotham Classic. Following a Davaris McGowens layup that gave NC A&T a 48-35 lead with 13:38 to play, Rider went on a 17-2 run, capped by a Tyere Marshall layup, to take a 52-50 lead with 5:14 remaining in the second half. With 26 seconds to play, Sam Hunt hit a jumper to give the Aggies a 59-58 lead before Thomas’ heroics won it for the Broncs. Thomas ended the game with 17 points and seven rebounds. Rider (8-3) also received 10 points from Jimmie Taylor. Rider is now 3-0 in Gotham Classic play. The Broncs, who won at Pacific earlier in the Classic, are just one of two teams in the five-year history of the Gotham Classic to win two road games. In 2013, North Dakota State won at Notre Dame and Bryant. NC A&T (1-10) is 0-3 in the Gotham Classic with those three losses coming by just 16 points. The Aggies were paced by the 16-point effort of Eliel Gonzalez.

Tuesday, December 20STOCKTON, Calif. - T.J. Wallace netted 20 points to lead Pacific to a 69-56 win over Kennesaw State, ending the Gotham Classic with a 2-2 record. Wallace was 7-of-15 from the field to lead the Tigers, who improve to 5-7 on the season. Up 37-34 at the half, Pacific burst out with a 19-7 run to start the second half and take a 56-41 lead. The Tigers held Kennesaw State to just 7-of-25 shooting from the field in the second stanza after the Owls shot 14-of-30 in the first half. Joining Wallace in double figures for Pacific were Ray Bowles with 18 points and Jacob Lampkin with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Kennesaw State (3-9) was led once again by Kendrick Ray who tallied 22 points. Ray entered the game ranked eighth nationally with a 23-1 ppg scoring average.

GOTHAM CLASSICA BRIEF HISTORY

2015 - Michael Young scored 22 points and hauled down six rebounds as Pittsburgh used a 33-12 run to erase a seven-point first half deficit and beat Davidson 94-69 in the Gotham Classic Showcase Game at Madison Square Garden. Young was named the most outstanding player of the Gotham Classic.

2014 - T.J. Cline earned most outstanding player honors for posting team highs of 13 points (5-of-6 shooting from the field), five rebounds, and three assists in leading Richmond to a 65-63 win over Pepperdine at Madison Square Garden. The contest saw 12 lead changes and four ties - mostly in the first half - as the Spiders took the lead for good with 12:03 to play.

In the nightcap, Juwan Staten scored 24 points and handed out six assists to take MOP laurels as No. 22 West Virginia claimed an 83-69 win over NC State. The Wolfpack’s Trevor Lacey also netted 24 points.

2013- Lenzelle Smith, Jr. scored seven of his nine points in the final 33 seconds as No. 2 Ohio State rallied from an eight-point deficit with 58 seconds to play to beat Notre Dame, 64-61. The Buckeyes closed the game on a 14-3 run and Smith was the key to the closing spurt.LaQuinton Ross led the Buckeyes with 16 points and 11 rebounds to garner most outstanding player honors.

2012- In the inaugural Gotham Classic, Khalif Wyatt scored a career-high 33 points in leading Temple to an 83-79 victory over No. 3 Syracuse. The win marked the fifth straight season Temple had beaten a top 10 team while being unranked themselves. C.J. Fair had a career-high 25 points for Syracuse, which saw its 52-game regularseason non-conference winning streak snapped.
