Got Soul? By Rabbi Dana Saroken For over a year now, we have been preparing for the launch of The Alvin and Lois Lapidus Center for Healing & Spirituality (aka: “the Soul Center”) and the day is finally here! On Sunday, November 13, the Center will be open for people to come see, to experience a sampling of programs, and to formally dedicate the space with the Lapidus family and our leadership. What is the “Soul Center?” The Soul Center is a spiritual start-up, powered by Judaism. It’s a place where you can come to nurture yourself – personally and spiritually – whether you’re coming in to take a break from the chaotic world and just want to sit with a cup of tea, or whether you want to come by for any of our programs – the door will soon be open! The Soul Center is organized around the central pillars of mindfulness, healing, rejuvenation and growth. Our programs are experiential and will appeal to those people who feel “spiritually” or “religiously” inclined but aren’t necessarily inspired by the traditional offerings of most synagogues. Our mission is to transform Jewish life in Baltimore through innovative programs that feel meaningful, authentic, and offer value to people’s already full lives. We get it…we get that we’re all insanely busy. We get that on any given day, we barely have time to respond to everything in our in-boxes much less make time for more. We get it….carpools, meetings, dinners to be made, homework to help with, calls to return and so it goes day after day after day. We also get that people (us included!) need more than just to survive the days. Our Center is based upon the understanding that people need certain things in order to live a meaningful life that feels worthy of living: Each of us needs to have opportunities to grow as individuals We want to experience awe again and live with gratitude We want to experience a sense of belonging We want to connect with others in meaningful ways (and yes, I mean more than reading each other’s Facebook posts!) We want to hit the “pause button” from time to time and give ourselves a break from the running and the doing and the producing We want to be connected to something greater than ourselves – whether that’s God or community We want to feel like we’re making a difference and making our world (or at least our corner of the world) a bit better And…. Even when we’re grown up… We need “fun” in our lives. And so…. that’s what we’ll be doing: providing people with ways to grow, to connect, to pause and to enjoy life again, feel grateful and experience awe. Infuse with inspiring Jewish wisdom and there you have it…. the Soul Center. Got Soul?By Rabbi Dana Saroken

For over a year now, we have been preparing for the launch of The Alvin and Lois Lapidus Center for Healing & Spirituality (aka: “the Soul Center”) and the day is finally here!

Our Center is based upon the understanding that people need certain things in order to live a meaningful life that feels worthy of living:• Each of us needs to have opportunities to grow as individuals• We want to experience awe again and live with gratitude • We want to experience a sense of belonging • We want to connect with others in meaningful ways (and yes, I mean more than reading each other’s Facebook

posts!) • We want to hit the “pause button” from time to time and give ourselves a break from the running and the doing

and the producing • We want to be connected to something greater than ourselves – whether that’s God or community• We want to feel like we’re making a difference and making our world (or at least our corner of the world) a bit

better • And….

6 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

It is 1930 and a young Jewish boy is sitting at a kitchen table with his grandfather, studying the Talmud. They are in Eastern Europe, the Pale of Settlement, the area that was sometimes Russia and sometimes Poland. His grandfather is an Orthodox rabbi, traditional, wearing a black gaberdine and a high black kippah, a rabbi coming from a long line of rabbis. He teaches his grandson the text in Hebrew, translating it into Yiddish, using the traditional chant to make the texts easier to remember. The boy is seven years old, bright and capable and a bit of a dreamer. His parents are secular Jews, and the boy struggles to mesh the values his grandfather teaches him with the way his parents live. At one point on a Shabbat afternoon his parents put on a record, and he walks into the living room and smashes the record player, believing the music to be a violation of Shabbat. The boy loves his grandfather, learning from him not only a love of Judaism, but also a love of the Jewish people that would be a guiding force in his life.

It is 1936, and the boy is now a teenager, just past the age of his bar mitzvah. He is walking the streets of Tel Aviv with a friend on a warm spring day. There is just the hint of a breeze coming off the Mediterranean. They talk about where they’ve come from and what they hope to find in the future. A couple of years earlier his parents decided to leave Europe and move to the land of Israel where they hoped to make a better life and live without the threat of anti-Semitism. The boy is a polyglot – in other words, a quick study at languages, and within a short time has mastered the spoken Hebrew of the Yishuv, adding it to the Polish, Yiddish, and Russian that he already speaks. A bit later in his life he would add English to that list as well. He didn’t know it that warm spring day, but those languages would become the tools of his trade, and as he grows, he learns to be a master communicator.

It is now 1944, and the world has become a dark and troubled place. Our teenager is a young man, 21 years-old, a leader in the Zionist Youth Movement. He has already lived for a number of years on kibbutzim, and understands agriculture. His work experience includes time spent as a farmer and also as a shepherd. He has dipped his toes into the early political world of the growing Jewish state, and is known and respected by his peers. But on this night he leads a group of older teenagers and a team of young scientists on an secret and illegal mission in the Negev. In the darkness they quietly cross into a closed military zone controlled by the British. Their orders come from the Palmach, and like the biblical מרגלים

their mission is to scout out the land. How can this arid wilderness be settled? Can it be cultivated, can it be made green and fertile? After just a few days they team is spotted by a Bedouin camel patrol and captured by the British. The group spends two weeks in a British jail, and as the leader of the team, the young man is heavily fined.

It is a cold November day in Paris in 1954. The skies are slate grey, and a brisk breeze blows though the streets, sending the Parisians scuttling for warmth. The street cafes are largely empty. Our young man is 31 now, and as the November days go by he meets with top representatives from the French government and its military. He passionately yet patiently states the case for the six year-old State of Israel. That she is a budding democracy. That her regional interests align with those of France. Ultimately the French decide to support Israel, selling her weapons, and even siding with her in the 1956 Sinai campaign. His work enables Israel to defend herself against hostile Arab neighbors, and also to establish her nuclear reactor in Dimona, tipping the balance of power in the Middle East Israel’s way. Just a few years later the French would present the young man with the Legion of Honor, the highest honor bestowed by their country.

The vignettes could go on and on. In 1963, there were negotiations with then President of the United States John F. Kennedy, bringing Hawk anti-aircraft missiles to Israel for the first time. There were two stints as Prime Minister. Almost 50 years of service in the Knesset. A Nobel Peace Prize in 1994. And of course yesterday, with tributes being paid from leaders all over the world, with the heads of state and dignitaries from over 70 countries in attendance, the 93 year-old Shimon Peres was laid to rest on Har Herzl, that beautiful and historic cemetery just on the edge of Jerusalem, in the land that he so deeply loved and had worked so hard for. His love of Judaism and the Jewish people, the love he had learned as a boy sitting at his grandfather’s knee, never left him. Neither did his idealism, the fierce belief that he carried that our actions can make a difference in the world, and that the pursuit of peace must always drive us forward and must never end.

May his soul be bound up in the bonds of eternal life. And may his memory always be for a blessing.

7The Voice of Beth El Congregation

Soul Center Open House & Dedication Sunday, November 13, from 3:00-5:00 p.m.

Come and see our new beautiful space. Learn about upcoming programs. Meet some of our facilitators and educators. Enjoy warm refreshments to warm the soul.

Dedication at 4:15 p.m.

Meet Sarah Shapiro, LCSW-CI’m thrilled to be joining the Beth El community as the new in-house social worker, providing short-term counseling to congregants, staff, school families and Soul Center participants six hours each week. My goal is to help people manage both crises and normal life cycle issues such as parenting, relationships, health and mental health concerns, caring for aging or disabled relatives, employment changes and the loss of a loved one. I am also available to refer people who need more long-term counseling or social services support to outside agencies, therapists and community resources. Our conversations can be as formal or informal as you would like – by appointment, over the phone, or just drop in. Best of all, these short-term counseling services are available free of charge.

I am a licensed clinical social worker with over twenty years of experience providing short-term counseling to clients of all ages in a variety of school and community settings. Currently, I also work as the Shleimut Social Work Consultant at Beth Israel Congregation and for Jewish Community Services at Aleph Bet Jewish Day School in Annapolis. I also maintain a small private practice specializing in short-term counseling to help people address life challenges and transitions.

I will be on-site at Beth El usually on Wednesdays from 4-6 p.m. and Thursdays from 1-5 p.m. During this time, I will be available to see people in person by previously scheduled appointment or on a walk-in basis, engage in telephone counseling, and assist the clergy by providing telephone support to ill or bereaved congregants. My office is in the Soul Center and I can be reached via email at [email protected] or phone at 410-484-0411 ext. 1111. I look forward to having the opportunity to connect with many of you.

Meet Rachel Siegal“God is good.” I love that expression. I tend to say it when it feels like the stars are aligned and things are going exactly as you dreamed they would. That’s how I feel about Rachel Siegal coming our way and joining us at the Lapidus Center for Healing and Spirituality.

To know Rachel is to know that she’s a dynamo; a person who’s always in action; always thinking, dreaming, connecting and doing. Rachel is a person who cares about causes big and small; she cares about Judaism and Jewish living and she cares about people. She is incredibly smart, talented, competent and creative, and she knows how to think outside the box. So you can probably imagine how blessed we are to have her directing the day-to-day life of the Soul Center.

Before coming to us, Rachel served as the Development Director for the Pearlstone Center for the past six years. Prior to that, she served for four years as a Vice President for the Associated’s Women’s Department and for the Annual Campaign. Born and raised in Cleveland, Rachel holds an MBA and a Masters in Jewish Communal Service from Brandeis University and an undergraduate degree in Judaic Studies and Africana Studies from Brown University. She is married to Sam Andorsky, a pediatric ophthalmologist, and together they have three children: Yoni, Nava, and Meital. She is an active volunteer at Krieger Schechter Day School and with the Pearlstone Center.

And now, she will be working to provide our community opportunities to experience Judaism in profoundly meaningful, enriching, and connective and compelling ways. We’re all in for a real treat and thank you, Rachel, for everything you’ve already done and all that is yet to be!

Adult Sibling Relationships — the bond siblings develop in childhood may be vastly different from the relationship that evolves in adulthood. Driven by affection but also characterized by ambivalence and ambiguity, adult sibling relationships can become hurtful, uncertain, competitive, or exhausting though the undercurrents of love and loyalty remain. An approach that recognizes the positive aspects of the changing sibling relationship, as well as those that need improvement, can restore healthy ties and rebuild family closeness.

Torah Maintenance CardsA project of the Beth El Seniors is to support the care and repair of our synagogue’s Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usable Torah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by a learned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and every word must be correctly spelled. The ink cannot be chipped off even a little bit. The parchment on which the Torah is written must be flawless. The slightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations.

Torah Maintenance Cards may be purchased at the Beth El front office or contact Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631. These all-purpose cards are six for $10.00 or $2.00 each.

ClubMen’s

Have you seen them yet? Aren’t they fabulous? Blue suede with white embroidery! Those who have seen them recognize the description; those who haven’t will soon. It’s the new Men’s Club yarmulkes which are in the process of being delivered to all paid-up members of the 2016-17 Men’s Club. Besides looking great, they will give the Club a much higher visibility at Beth El, not to mention, at any Jewish organization attended by our members. Wear them proudly, members, and make us order more than the 120 on-hand for distribution.

We’ve also ordered 24 red suede ones for special occasions, such as High Holiday ushering, the Purim Carnival, Adult Education programs, etc. It’s worth volunteering and participating.

Your Board of Directors has been hard at work to ensure this year will feature the best special events, speakers, and brunches ever. Our opening event on September 25, which was led by Rabbi Schwartz who discussed “High Holidays: What We Do and Why We Do It,” was attended by one of the largest and most enthusiastic groups in our history.

As promised, our Steak (Salmon) & Scotch in the Sukkah in October was another fabulous event. The plates didn’t leak and the flatware didn’t break when cutting. As if that weren’t enough, our speaker helped set the tone for the entire evening. Once again, the Men’s Club pulled off an evening to remember. A big “thank you” for a job well done to Events Chair Roger McIntosh and “S (S) & SS” chair Shep Brown and his assistants Joe Silhavy and Sonny Davis. Job well done generating an A+ event and thanks to all who attended. Without your support, there would be no events!

At our November Brunch, Isaac “Yitzy” Schleifer, a local Baltimore politician, will speak about Baltimore and national politics. The speaker on November 13 is very timely and will shine a new light on what has happened and where the local area and county are heading.

The repeat of a well-received FAMILY event from two years ago will take place on Sunday, November 20—RAVEN/COWBOY TAILGATE. We will serve grilled hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings. In addition to the usual beverages, we are hoping to serve, for the first time, an assortment of football “brews.” Bring the kids as we intend to have plenty of entertainment besides viewing a great game. Another first will be the use of the Religious School’s new Commons Room and kitchen located near the school end of the rear parking lot. When you enter the rear lot, just look for the Raven blowup for directions.

Shabbat Dinner at Beth ElThe Baltimore Shabbat Project will be held Sunday, November 6, through Saturday, November 12. The community-wide Shabbat will be held on Friday, November 11. Beth El will be planning a Friday night Shabbat dinner. Executive Director Josh Bender will facilitate a discussion called “It’s not that the Jews have kept Shabbat...Shabbat has kept the Jews.”

Cost: $25/adults; $10/child under 10. RSVP to Lori Downing at [email protected] by November 1. Your payment is your reservation. For more information on events taking place during the week, visit baltimoreshabbatproject.org.

CPR ClassThursday, December 1, from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.Have you ever wanted to save someone’s life? If so, join us for the life saving CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) training. Cost $28. For further information, please call Lori Downing at 410-484-0411.

CommitteeEvents

On Wednesday, December 7, the Men’s Club will be partnering with the Rabbi Mark G. Loeb Center for Lifelong Learning for 1st Wednesdays @ Beth El featuring MASN’s Tom Davis, who will discuss the Orioles, MASN, and also answer your sports questions following his remarks.

-That takes us through December with lots of interesting events for our members, as well as for the family. Additionally, we have a Havdallah service, Purim events, International Remembrance Day, Golf Tournament, and numerous brunches planned for 2017. Our events are exciting and we hope to present a cross-section of ideas about religion, current events, Baltimore sports, etc. and we welcome your suggestions and feedback as to topics, speakers, and so forth. Please remember when an RSVP is requested, to do so, as that allows us to prepare sufficient space, food, and drinks for all.

Thanks for your past and future support of the Beth El Men’s Club. We are YOUR club and are only as good as the support and involvement YOU provide.
