BRISBANE WATER CRICKET CLUB – PRESENTATION NIGHT SEASON 2013/14

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – SEASON 2013/14

It is my privilege to present to you all, the President’s report on the very first season of the Brisbane

Water Cricket Club. As you are all aware, our club formed this season from the Gosford and

Mountains / Kariong Cricket Clubs as the way forward for the development of cricket in the Greater

Gosford area. With new colors, a new logo and a new committee and structure and significant time

to plan the venture, the future looked bright at the start of the year and much was expected on the

field from our new club. I need to thank at this point all of those who served on the initial steering

committee – Simon Scarr, Mark Brown, Tim Shelley, Simon Blake, Tony Belcher, Jeff Vilensky and

Peter Bamforth whose efforts and dedication provided the framework for what is now one of the

largest cricket clubs on the Central Coast, with immeasurable potential and hope for the future.

Your new committee worked very hard during the year, sometimes under frustrating and at times

difficult circumstances to ensure that your teams made it onto the park each week and that you had

the opportunity to play cricket with friends and colleagues each Saturday. Our thanks need to go to

Tim Shelley and Simon Scarr (Vice Presidents), Tony Luff (Secretary), Keith Herft (Treasurer),

Simon Blake (Director of Cricket) and Tony Belcher (Social Director) for their efforts during our

inaugural season.

The nature of forming a new club of course is very challenging, and it is very clear to me that we

didn’t get absolutely everything right. Mistakes made along the way and circumstances which

presented themselves meant that not everything went smoothly during the year. Of course, lessons

have been learnt and I’m certain we’ll get a lot more of this right in the coming year, as we continue

to work together on growing and improving our club to meet our vision of becoming the best on the

Coast. I need to thank everyone involved with our club, from every player to every parent and

supporter for their understanding, support and efforts as our inaugural season has played out. I

look forward to your continuing support in the years ahead.

In terms of results it was a mixed bag. From the senior side of things, our top two sides –the

Division 1 and Division 2 sides both made the semi-finals but fell at the first hurdle, thus meaning

their both continuing in those divisions for next season. None of our other teams finished better

than 6th which in my view was caused by two things – incorrect grading of our teams in the

Page 4: GOSFORD CRICKET CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT · Title: GOSFORD CRICKET CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT Author: Tony Belcher Created Date: 4/12/2014 2:03:17 PM

competition (which we will look to fix for next season) and the ongoing problem of commitment

from players on a weekly basis, which meant hours and hours of selectors and captains time, trying

to make sure teams made it onto the park each week. Indeed, we had to withdraw one of our

teams from the competition halfway through the season due to lack of genuine commitment from

players, and it was only due to the efforts of many of our junior players that we managed to field 8

teams for the rest of the season. This needs to be addressed prior to next season as a priority for

our club.

On the positive side however, our 1st XI became the first team from the Central Coast to make the

semi-final stage of the Country Shield (unfortunately beaten by Cowra in that game),

congratulations to them on a mighty effort in that competition. Congratulations also to our Under 19

team, who carried on the tradition by capturing the Under 19 title, a year after the Under 21 title

had been won by our club. This certainly bodes well for our future.

The best news for us this season however, came in the junior competitions. We entered 13 teams

into the competitions (including 3 x Under 9 teams). Six of our sides made the semi-finals (Under

15 A, Under 15 B Blue, Under 15 B Green, Under 13 A, Under 13 B and Under 11 A.

Unfortunately, all were beaten in the semi-finals except the Under 15 A team who were beaten in

the grand final and our first premiers, the undefeated Under 13 A team, who set the benchmark for

the future, by winning their grand final and being minor premiers as well. Well done and

congratulations to them, and everyone involved with them; and also our Under 15 B Green team

who were minor premiers as well. Thanks to all those involved in our junior teams.

So that is season one, done and dusted. I hope you all enjoy the presentation evening or day, and I

apologise for not being able to attend the senior presentation due to work commitments. Please, as

you reflect on what has occurred on the cricket landscape over the past 12 months, consider giving

a little or a lot of your time to our new club. There are some great people doing some great things

to help everyone play and enjoy their cricket, but many hands make light work and the more people

get involved, the better it will be for everyone. Simply chat to myself or one of our committee for

information on how to get involved.

See you all again next season…………

Mark Ronson

2013 / 2014 – CAPTAIN’S SEASON SUMMARIES FIRST DIVISION

The Brisbane Water Division 1 side finished the season in 3rd place with 8 wins, 1 draw and 5 losses. They played The Entrance in the semi finals and unfortunately lost. Batting Bowling Jason Harris – 328 @ 27.33 Jason Buckley – 27 @ 15.93 Daniel Morrissey - 246 @ 24.60 Robert Brown – 25 @ 11.28 Carl Bolte – 234 @ 16.71 Ben Sunshine – 20 @ 12.70 David Mitchell – 213 @ 35.50 Geoff Drury – 15 @ 13.00 Kevin Searle – 210 @ 19.09 Kevin Searle – 14 @ 18.93 SECOND DIVISION The inaugural Brisbane Water Division 2 squad had a memorable season. The season closed with a semi-final match after placing third through the rounds. The dejection following the subsequent loss was soon replaced by fond reminiscence of the season passed. Moreover, that dejection spoke of the high standards set and the great strides that this team had taken. From uncertain beginnings, division two became a force to be reckoned with and a team to be feared throughout the Central Coast. The team was initially led by the silver fox, Geoffrey Drury. Geoff manufactured a brilliant start to the season, marshalling his troops to a string of wins. This was followed by the BWCC’s first bloodless coup. The Doctor applied his kiss of death, and Mr Drury was henceforward banished to the deep, dark realms of division one oblivion. The loss of his demon fast bowling and tactical nous left a significant gap in the side, but we were pleased to see that he at least got a bowl in div one. The modus operandi changed significantly under the captaincy of The Doctor, with a noticeable decrease in pre-match warm-up times, a severe reduction in motivational text messaging, and a drastic increase in player requests for valium prescriptions. It was also clear that anyone who bowled spin was likely to get through around 35 overs per innings. The team struggled mid-season with a few losses. Division two often acted as its own worst enemy, leaving much of the batting to be done by the tail-end. While this tactic often worked for us, we don’t recommend a middle order collapse as a regular batting plan to any other team. Div 2 had a late season revival. With a number of close matches during the season (two ties against Warnervale and two losses by one run!!!!) we started to win those nail-biters as the year wore on. After growing tired of the close matches, and needing a win in the final match against Woy Woy, the boys affected a colossal drubbing of the opposition in 50 overs to set up a semi final berth against Northern Power, While we lost that semi-final against Northern Power, we put ourselves in winning positions and did not disgrace ourselves by any means. The median age of the side was close to 20, and this bodes

Page 10: GOSFORD CRICKET CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT · Title: GOSFORD CRICKET CLUB PRESENTATION NIGHT Author: Tony Belcher Created Date: 4/12/2014 2:03:17 PM

very well for the future of div 2 cricket. Not only that, I fully expect to see many of our div 2 players forcing their way into div 1 next season, and commanding a regular Premier League place when Brisbane Water is granted that spot which it rightly deserves. With the sheer number of players that division 2 fielded this year, it’s impractical to go through every name. No doubt I’ll miss some players, and they may feel aggrieved, but there are some performances that deserve mentioning nonetheless. Ryan Wilson broke out of his Geoff Boycott shell to command one of the most scintillating centuries of the year, witnessed by the owner/curator of Mandalong as the first ton on the ground. Will Byrne and Dale Wilson strung multiple match-defining innings throughout the season and earned richly deserved call-ups to division one. Aidan Plumb and Greg Briggs provided leadership and phenomenally accurate bowling throughout the season. Mark Baker saw a late season return from injury blossom into wicket-taking spree and he and Jimmy Murphy provided a well-needed mentoring force for the younger bowlers. Matthew Sunshine and Blake Rodgers discovered untapped resolve and saw their talent come to fruition as both young men took responsibility for their cricket and played with more maturity than I (and maybe even they) could have imagined. Guy Finch and Blake Keegan were two success stories of div 2, both putting in excellent performances in the lower grades, backing those up in div 2, and being among the first picked for the semi-final: a truly commendable achievement. Huge thanks goes to the Brisbane Water Cricket Club. To single out individuals would be a disservice to the sense of ‘team’ that the board has exemplified. For a first-year organisation to be run with such professionalism and verve is a testament to the club and its vision. It has been a pleasure working with Brisbane Water Cricket Club this season, and a true privilege to serve as captain to a tremendous bunch of blokes. FOURTH DIVISION GREEN

The winners that could have been.

From behind the stumps came Robin, Up and down he was bobbin, He dove left, he dove right,

Yet there was not a ball in sight.

Tommy threw one down tumblin, Then to the boundary he was stumblin,

The ball in the air, and Deane was there, Then he too was a fumblin.

The skipper said, “f**k me dead”, “I think I’ll try something other.”

As if in his head, a little voice said: “Richard, the batsman, he will smother.”

After a ball or two, a wicket was due,

But Richie put down another, ‘T was a caught and bowled, that he should

have had hold, He cast his eye to big brother.

The skipper looked back; he had a different

attack, One that would surely deliver,

Garlo was on, and the batsman was drawn, He got the poor soul in the liver.

With one batsman down, the luck turned

around, Although no wicket was taken,

For before too long, Skip brought Noel on, And he had the batsmen a shakin.

From the other end, he mixed his men,

First Rich then Garlo then Jesse, He bought Brodie on, then back to Tom,

Thats when things got messy.

The ball went through, and the bail flew, And then the innings was done.

Skip looked at his men, and that was when, He said, “let’s have some fun.”

With a glint in his eye, and a pie in the sky,

Deane’s innings was over. At not more than nine, said, “that ball was mine,”

As he walked back through the clover.

Then Richie swore, after six six and four, He too was finished.

That left Sean with his golfer’s brawn, And the next ball he diminished.

With a swing of his iron, that ball was flyin,

And into the fence it struck. With Jess at an end, it was no time to defend,

But then they both came unstuck.

So out came Robbin, his legs were a throbbin, Yet he still gave the bowler a glare.

With the team on a pair, skip said “don’t you dare,”

But Herbie sent one in the air.

He was our saviour, but with that behaviour, He got himself a duck,

To Tommy Skip said “go, its time, let it be so,” So Tommy had a pluck.

With one ball left, it felt like theft,

Our bowlers batted to win. The usual story, we revelled in glory,

And Skip went home with a grin.

Thanks to all the boys for putting in this season. With all the changes that were made during the season, I thought everyone put in a great effort. We may not have won as much as the tale above depicts, but I can honestly say I had the most fun playing cricket I have in a while, and it’s because of the team I was playing with. I’d like to thank all of the 42 players that contributed to Div 4 Green throughout the season and especially the other captains and the guys in the core of the side. If you didn’t get a mention above, it’s not because I don’t like you, your name just doesn’t rhyme with anything.

Even though we finished 7th, we did manage to win 2 games (Terrigal and Umina) and were unlucky not to win a few more games. Although we were unlucky not to win more games we were competitive throughout the season. Even though cricket is a team sport, there were some great individual performances with the bat such as: Ian MacLeod scoring his first century in 20 years (he also got a 61 before Christmas), Glen Gardiner scoring 3 scores over 50 (81, 57 & 50) and Richard Harvey putting on a 66 run opening wicket partnership with Russell Guest (and Richard getting out in the 10th over for 61). With the ball, Dick Frost started the season with a 4/15 and later in the season got a 4/16. Brad Guest got his career best bowling figures of 4/4. However one of our main go-to bowler was Brad Watson. He opened the bowling for us every time he played for us and nearly every time he was able to get one or two top order wickets to put us in a strong position in the game. Overall, we manage to have a very enjoyable and thank you everyone who played in the mighty BWCC Div 4 Blue side and look forward to seeing everyone next season for a stronger season. David Amaral – Division 4 Blue Co-Captain Batting Bowling Ian MacLeod – 300 @ 37.50 Richard Frost – 24 @ 19.50 Glen Gardiner – 277 @ 46.17 Brad Watson – 18 @ 13.17 David Amaral – 217 @ 31.00 Simon Kelly – 10 @ 20.80 Guy Finch – 117 @ 39.00 Brad Guest – 9 @ 29.56 Jake Carraro – 105 @ 13.13 David Amaral – 8 @ 46.88 FIFTH DIVISION The Brisbane Water Division 5 side finished the season with 1 win but were very unlucky not to win more games.

Two things I really need to comment on are the efforts of the ‘young tongues’ and the stellar year of the “Best Bowler on the Coast” – Steven ‘Usain Bulk Meatloaf’ Hills. i) The Young Tongues – Many thanks and appreciation of the efforts of ‘Mr Cricket’ Lachie Bayliss; ‘Doughty Jezza’ Jeremy Belcher, ‘Mate’ Cam Davies and ‘The Giant’ Andre Cheverall. These boys not only played but actively contributed by undertaking the keeping duties, batting in the top 4 and at times with the Bowling. It should be remembered these boys all played u13As this year and held their own with the seniors in other teams. ii) “Best Bowler on the Coast” What can I say? It is very rare to hear about someone taking a ‘double hat trick’ but to actually observe someone actually taking one is something that happens once in a life time. That day at Doyalson “Hillsy” completed this feat and he didn’t celebrate too much at all. I was a bit worried that he might collapse after all that running around. In serious I would like to thank his contribution on the field and off the field this season. Hillsy has been a key character in helping players from the two former clubs getting together. Although, this season was not highly successful I would like to thank the efforts of the guys who played this season and who helped to make a difficult season fun to be involved in. (I apologise to anyone I have missed). The ‘mercurial’ Steve Le Marquand only one in the club with a 6 wicket haul; ‘Evergreen’ Phil McGinty;’ Have A Chat’ Aaron Heward; ‘Piglet’ Chris Gentles; ‘Magnificient’ Mick McDonald – give him back to us Div 5; ‘Gregarious’ Greg Lawler and the ‘Toiler’ Simmo. All in all it was tough season but fun; we are close with the right grading next year the team will be more competitive. I would like to thank BWCC for giving me (and Hillsy) the opportunity to captain this team, all the players in the team and to Phil at the ‘The Settler’ many thanks. “Bluetongues and new “Tongues” see you in season 2014/2015. Yours in Cricket Tony Belcher – Division 6 Captain

I'd first like to start off by saying what a fantastic inaugural season for Brisbane Water Bluetongues. I took over as captain of Division 7 in the last game before the Christmas break. From the 14 games played the team managed to win only the one game all season and that was early in the season, which was also an outright win. 12 out of the 13 games were loses and there was also a draw as well having a game washed out finishing the season bottom of the ladder. Division 7 used a total of 52 players throughout the season with players going up the grades or unavailable to play. I would like to thank all the junior players from the under 17A's all the way down to the under 13's for helping out throughout the season, some only for one game and others on a regular basis. All the players gave 100% every week with the bat, ball or in the field, and on a few occasions some of the games we close. As captain it was a pleasure watching some of the young players from the juniors just to name a few like Dan Weingeartner and Josh Doolan for their bowling efforts and batting anywhere in the order and showing what they can do, special mention for Dan's bowling effort against Warnervale in the two day game where he took 4-17 including a hat-trick. Josh Beechey coming on to bowl when needed and getting a few key wickets and also wicketkeeping when needed, Chris Mortell was unlucky not to be rewarded a bit with some good bowling and his innings with the bat where he scored half the total and it may have also been his highest score. Also Kenny Holland, Andre Cheverall and John Patterson for all their efforts. Also all the regular senior players, Tony Belcher who was captain of the team before I took over, and giving everyone in the team a fair go. Mick Finch for all his hard work behind the stumps and for all his help this season on and off the field. Kris Armstrong for putting his hand up to open the batting for me and his bowling efforts. Alex Bain bowling and batting where and when he was needed to when he joined the team at the end of the season and for captaining the last game. Peter Hoynes for his excellent fielding showing everyone else how it's done. And all the other players who played in Division 7 this season I thank you all for your efforts. In closing I would like to congratulate the under 19 side on winning the final against The Entrance well done boys, Division 1 and Division 2 on making the finals this year congratulations on successful seasons. And also all the junior sides on making the finals with a special mention to the under 13A's going all the way through the season undefeated. I would like to thank everyone involved in running the club and getting everything all organised for the inaugural season. Mitchell Rodgers – Division 7 Captain Batting Bowling
