This has been a tremendously busy time for educators in B.C. Not only have we been implementing new curriculum this year, but the district is also putting new and “temporary” report card writing processes in place while the Ministry of Education develops a final reporting order this year. Teachers are experimenting and learning with new curriculum, which is exciting but also demanding in terms of time and preparation. Report cards are always a tremendous amount of work; typically each teacher puts in 30 to 40 hours of work outside of school time to generate a class set and doing it with new software and new curriculum is a huge challenge. Please be aware that not only will the report cards look different, teachers are just learning the process “on the fly” as only recently we saw what the reports will look like. There are many factors beyond the control of district staff and particularly school staff. While we always work hard to achieve quality teaching and learning, be aware that reporting will have its hiccups. I ask that all families understand there will likely be uncertainties around the overall quality and clarity of reports for term 1 and probably even term 2 this year. Also our next newsletter will go out on the 16th of December. Sincerely, Frank Roberto Principal WEATHER WEAR As the cold, dark and often rainy days of winter settle in, we want to remind our parents to send their children to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Only on very rare occasions do we call an ‘inside’ day at recess or lunch, so please remember raincoats, boots, hats, and gloves. It is also a good idea to keep change of clothes at school, particularly with the younger children, in case they get wet and muddy. (Reflective clothing is also great to keep our kids safe!) As a reminder, we are only able to provide supervision for 15 minutes before school and 15 minutes after school. For this reason, please do not send your child to school before 8:20 am, unless he/she has made alternate arrangements to be under the direct supervision of a staff member. Likewise, please encourage your child(ren) to go straight home after dismissal at 2:30 pm. Thank you! EMERGENCY COMFORT KITS

Dear Parents/Guardians: The Emergency Preparedness Committee which is made up of parents and staff members met at the end of last year to discuss our Emergency Preparedness Plan. The results of that meeting was that the PAC will continue to assist in providing water and vacuum packed food bars for the school in the event of an extended emergency. To supplement these items we are asking parents to provide a completed comfort kit for each of your children that will be kept in their classroom throughout the year. The comfort kits are intended to provide comfort to your child in the event of an emergency. It is reassuring to students and staff to know that these kits are in the classroom in case of an emergency. We have provided a few options for items to be inserted in the kit. Completed comfort kits are to be returned to your child’s teacher directly in a small sized Ziplock bag with your child’s name clearly marked in felt on the outside of the bag. We thank you in advance for your prompt support to ensure our students safety in case of an emergency. Mr. Roberto

It is imperative that we keep to the quantity of the suggested food items as storage space is limited.

Comfort Kit must include the following:

comfort kit letter and family photo

small travel Kleenex pack

Food items: (All items must be peanut free)

1 small box of raisins

1 small beef jerky (individual serving)

1 granola bar (peanut free)

1 fruit leather

Hard candy roll (such as Lifesavers or Mentos)

Division 16 is collecting items for the

Gifts for Seniors Program

Gifts for Seniors is a program that has run for the past 25 years. The program provides a senior in need with a gift bag of small items and a card on Christmas morning. The seniors this program supports live in assisted living homes and usually do not have the financial means to buy the necessities or everyday extras we take for granted. They often have no family and do not have someone who will be visiting them at Christmas. The program is run by a not-for-profit group and they are asking for donations to help fill gift bags this year. Gordon Greenwood’s, Division 16 class, is collecting items for this cause. If you have items you are willing to donate we would be happy to pass them on to this worthy program. Suggested items you might consider donating are: -Socks (ladies and men’s) -undershirts –scarves – hand lotion -face lotion -toothpaste -toothbrushes –combs –hair brushes –sample size lotions/shampoo –men’s polo shirts –costume jewelry –puzzles –crib sets –playing cards – cologne –perfume-chocolate -candy- puzzles –playing cards - nail polish –lipstick –makeup –hair ties –barrettes –perfume/cologne

– Or any small items you think a senior may appreciate

All items will need to be in to the school by November 25th.

Thank-you for supporting the Gifts for Seniors program.

The Gordon Greenwood PAC is excited to bring something new and fun to our school this year for our students. On Thursday December 15th, 2016 we are going to open the Reindeer Lane Kids Gift Shop in the gym at Gordon Greenwood. All of the students will have an opportunity to come to the shop and do their holiday shopping. Items available will be priced at $2. Students will be able to purchase gifts for loved ones with experienced shoppers to help them when needed. The PAC executive has decided on doing a White Elephant sale for our gift shop to encourage a greener holiday. We are asking each student to bring in a number of gently used items, in good to excellent condition, from home to donate to the Reindeer Lane Kids Gift Shop. There are 440 students in our school and we are hoping to receive enough items that each student can purchase 3-4 gifts. That means we are looking for over 1600 items! This is a great opportunity to clean out your drawers and cupboards! The shop manager is looking for items such as: Books, mugs, tea cups, stuffed animals, toys, jewelry, DVD’s, CD’s, household items, crafting supplies, unopened lotions and soaps, kitchen items, tools, sporting goods, pet items, xmas decorations, etc. The items must be in good condition as the students will be purchasing the items as gifts. We need items for parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins, friends, and pets. The shop staff will carefully go through all of the items to make sure the students have a good selection to choose from. We are also looking for wrapping paper, tissue paper, gift bags, packing paper, etc. to help us wrap the purchases. And we will need a lot of volunteers at the wrapping station! Please sign up now by emailing me at [email protected]. Please bring your items to the lobby of the school between now and December 13, 2016. More information will be sent home with students closer to the date. Thank you for your support! Stacey Shepherd, PAC President
