They are always looking for ways to improve instructional methods, learning activities and adapt curriculum to support the learning of all students. Given the wide range of student abilities and attitudes, and the social complexities of the classroom, teachers are always looking to improve opportunities for children. Friday, October 21st is a provincial professional development day. On the Professional Development Day, teachers province wide, will be attending sessions to learn new ideas and strategies to use in their classrooms. Students do not attend school on Friday, October 21st. On Monday, October 24th, students will be dismissed at 1:15. During this time, our staff members will continue to review the new curriculum that was implemented this year. B.C.’s new curriculum was redesigned to respond to the demanding world our students are entering. Rather than multiple learning objectives, teachers will be presenting ‘Big Ideas’ to students. It is desired that students go more in-depth with fewer topics. Students are learning ways to assess their own work, to be reflective about their learning and to be resourceful. As well, please do check out this website for more information on the new curriculum: https://curriculum.gov.bc.ca/curriculum-info AND, as always, take time to talk with your child’s teacher whenever you have questions about your child’s learning. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The staff at Gordon Greenwood are a highly energetic, collaborative, and dedicated group of professionals. They are always looking for ways to improve instructional methods, learning activities and adapt curriculum to support the learning of all students. Given the wide range

of student abilities and attitudes, and the social complexities of the classroom, teachers are always looking to improve opportunities for children. CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING The cross country coaches, Ms. Woelders, Ms. Choboter and Ms. Catterall would like to thank all the cross country runners for their dedication and hard work this season. We had a hard-core group that consistently showed up twice a week for practices. We are very proud of all of our students’ efforts as we consistently had a solid group of runners placing in the top 30 and we saw great improvement throughout the season. Thanks to our amazing coaches and staff/parent drivers. Without their participation and dedication these meets would not take place. Great job, everyone!

FALL SEASON REMINDERS Fall has officially arrived, please ensure that your children arrive at school in appropriate clothing for the season. Rain gear for rainy days is always helpful. Also, a change of clothes kept at the school is helpful for when students fall in muddy puddles or on wet ground. Children go outside for recess and lunch breaks to get some exercise and fresh air so it is important they be dressed appropriately.

PEANUT ALLERGY Your assistance in the following is greatly appreciated. As you may be aware, Gordon Greenwood Elementary is a Peanut and Nut Aware school. There are children in our school and in your child’s classroom who are allergic to nuts. Nut allergy is an increasingly recognized problem, particularly in children. While it has been recognized for decades, it is clear that the proportion of children affected has increased dramatically in recent years. Its importance lies in the fact that it can be fatal. Anaphylaxis is a word used for reactions to nuts of the type, which if severe enough, can be life-

threatening. As part of the Gordon Greenwood Community we can do our part. We ask that as

parents you consider what is placed in your child’s lunches or given as a

snack for recess. Unfortunately many children and adults who are allergic to

one kind of nut also become allergic to other kinds. This list includes peanuts,

almonds, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, hazel nuts, pistachio nuts, walnuts and

pecan nuts, etc.
