Sign InIn your favorite browser, visit drive.google.com.

This is what’s on your google drive right now. If you’ve used google docs or google drive in the past, you may already see documents here. If you look around you’ll notice that you can create new documents or you can upload documents to your drive.

Page 2: Google Drive - Lutheran High School North · 2013-11-22 · Cloud Storage Google Drive is a form of cloud storage. When you log into drive.google.com, you see what’s in your google

Cloud StorageGoogle Drive is a form of cloud storage. When you log into drive.google.com, you see what’s in your google docs “cloud.” You can access what’s in that cloud from many different devices. Computers, iPads, phones, friend’s computers, etc. Everything in the cloud is protected by your LHN password.

Google DriveThis graphic illustrates how the google “cloud” links all of these devices together. You can sign into any one of these and get information from the cloud.

What it should also show is that you can send documents from these devices back TO the cloud. So pretend like these are double-headed arrows.

Accessing it from your MacYou can access Google Drive on your Mac in a couple of different ways. We just saw that you can go to your browser and visit drive.google.com. Let’s explore that a bit more.

If you want to upload !les from your computer, you can use the up arrow button. Choose “Files” and then choose which !les you’d like to upload to google drive.

Once you do that, those !les will be accessible to you anywhere you can access google drive (which we’ll talk about soon)

Google drive is kind of like a hard drive in the sky that you can access from anywhere.

Page 3: Google Drive - Lutheran High School North · 2013-11-22 · Cloud Storage Google Drive is a form of cloud storage. When you log into drive.google.com, you see what’s in your google

The previous option is great if you only have a few !les that you want to upload, but if you want to upload a LOT of !les, click “connect drive to your desktop”

After it downloads, follow the steps to install it and sign in.

Now, whenever you go to your !nder, you will see a shortcut to Google Drive in the sidebar. You can see all of your drive documents and you can drag other documents into this folder.

You can also access it from the Google icon in the menu bar.

A few things to note:

If you drag a !le to your Google Drive folder, it will MOVE it, not copy it. So if you want to make a copy, hold down the option key while you drag.

You can save and work right from this folder. If you do, your documents are automatically being backed up to the cloud as you work.

Page 4: Google Drive - Lutheran High School North · 2013-11-22 · Cloud Storage Google Drive is a form of cloud storage. When you log into drive.google.com, you see what’s in your google

Did you catch that last thing I said? That’s right. If you just save everything to the google drive folder, you automatically have a backup of everything, all the time! It will be on your computer and it will automatically upload to google. AND you can access them from many different devices. Now about that...

SAY WHAAAAT?

Accessing it from your iPadDo you want to see your google drive documents on your iPad? Head over to the App store and download the (free) Google Drive App. Open it and sign in with your LHN email address.

As you will see when you search for it in the app store, there are a lot of apps that connect with Google Drive. This is the one we want for now. It’s the official app, made by Google.

The format is different, but notice that after you sign in, you see the same !les on the app that you saw on the computer. Take a look around.

Try uploading different types of !les from the computer. Notice you can view almost anything on your iPad that you upload to drive.

Page 5: Google Drive - Lutheran High School North · 2013-11-22 · Cloud Storage Google Drive is a form of cloud storage. When you log into drive.google.com, you see what’s in your google

Click on the up arrow to upload !les from your iPad’s camera roll to google drive.

(We will talk about other ways to get iPad !les into your drive later)

Sharing FilesWe’ve seen that you can upload !les to google drive. You can also use it to share !les with others.

Pretty cool stuff, huh? You can easily load !les from your computer or iPad and you can see them on the other device. Try loading it on your phone or your personal computer as well. Go to drive.google.com on a friend’s computer (make sure to log out when you’re done). With their permission, load a friend’s !le to your drive. See how it’s like a hard drive that follows you everywhere?

Share and collaborate in Drive on your iPhone and iPad

You can share any !le or Google Doc with others right from the Google Drive app on your iPhone or iPad. You can also collaborate on a Google document in real time.

See doc collaboration in action!

Centennial High School Government students used either a school provided laptop or their own device (laptop, iPad, etc) to work collaboratively on a Google Doc. The teacher set up the basic table then divided the room into 3 sections. Students took turns rotating through the columns to add their notes and read/edit notes from others to complete the document combining everything they had learned so far about the topics. Using Google Docs allows users to see changes in real time. As it is being typed on one computer, it shows up immediately on everyone else's computers.
