This month, we start the second movement of BELIEVE: PRACTICES. When we study the life of Jesus we notice a distinct pattern. Jesus faithfully lived in a purposeful way. He was modeling for us the Christian life. Jesus shows us how to live. So, it does us well to simply follow his pattern – to act like Jesus. Between now and Palm Sunday we will build on our 10 key Belief statements form the fall by introducing the 10 key spiritual practices of the Christian life. Each week I will invite us to prayerfully ask ourselves, “What should I do?” This shift from the fall to the spring – from what do I believe to what should I do – can have a powerful, transformative impact on our lives. Our spiritual practices drive our theological beliefs – what we say we believe – from our heads down to our heart, our hands, our mouths, and our feet. Randy Frazee, author of BELIEVE, states that “the Christian life is a full- contact sport that involves our hearts, soul, mind and strength. It commands us to love our neighbors as ourselves.” Our spiritual practices act like physical training. These practices allow us to develop the spiritual muscles to live in the way of Jesus. Many of us might consider starting gym memberships to get physically healthy and work off some of our Christmas pounds. Our BELIEVE: PRACTICES will provide the same kind of opportunity for our spiritual life – as we practice the actions of Jesus, our lives grow in strength and attitude to look more like Jesus.

Each week I will invite us to prayerfully ask ourselves, “What should I do?”

This shift from the fall to the spring – from what do I believe to what should I do – can have a powerful, transformative impact on our lives. Our spiritual practices drive our theological beliefs – what we say we believe – from our heads down to our heart, our hands, our mouths, and our feet.

Randy Frazee, author of BELIEVE, states that “the Christian life is a full-contact sport that involves our hearts, soul, mind and strength.

UNIFIED MISSION INVESTMENT PLAN

When we invest our money, we give serious consideration to where our money goes. We might invest in a new business venture, a child’s education, or a commitment of service. Our investments seek results, and contain risks.

When we make give to the Unified Mission Offering, we are making investments to Advance God’s Kingdom. A mission investment is different than a mission project. A mission project is usually short term, with no lasting results expected. As we give of our selves personally and financially to the Unified Mission Offering, we are expecting to see eternal results in the form of transformed lives and communities.

DENOMINATIONAL PARTNERS

One of the key investments we make each year is to our Denominational Partners. To Advance God’s Kingdom (Matthew 28: 19-20) we need partners who are working in our state, nation, and around the world. In our 2016 Unified Mission Fund Investment Plan, First Baptist invests in the ministries of the following: the Baptist World Alliance, Cooperative Baptist Fellowship/CBF Georgia, Georgia Baptist Convention/Southern Baptist Convention, and the Habersham Baptist Association.

For more ways that FBC will invest in God’s Mission around the world in 2016, please pick up an Advancing God’s Kingdom Investment Plan brochure at the church.

God’s Kingdom dvancing

ROUND TABLE Monday, January

25thcard signing will begin at 11:00

Jesus brought a new concept to the meaning of kingdom. God’s Kingdom would be in the people’s heart. The church would be the instrument through which the gospel would go to all nations.

To advance God’s Kingdom First Baptist has adopted a year round, Unified Mission Offering. Instead of giving to various designated mission offerings at different times of the year, we encourage everyone to give an above tithe Mission Offering throughout the year. The Unified Mission Offering will support all of the various mission offerings we have supported in the past as well as all of our mission efforts at home and around the world.

To give to the new Unified Mission Offering, please place your checks in one of the newly designed mission envelopes. Two of these envelopes will be mailed to each church family in January. They will also be available in the church pew racks. In February, each church family will receive a new box of FBC offering envelopes. Included in this box will be a monthly Unified Mission Offering envelope. During this transition, please disregard the old mission envelopes in the January/February offering envelope packets.

from Pastor John: New beginnings are always exciting! I have been through LOTS of new beginnings in the past few years….and they just seem to keep happening, as we antici-pate a new life in our family this year with the upcoming birth of our third grandson in March. As I think about discipleship and youth ministry, new beginnings are always a part of both of these ministries….teenagers are of-ten experiencing new things, and as disciples of Jesus we should always be growing and learning new things in our walk with the Lord. Here are some thoughts I came across recently from Ben Trueblood who serves as the Director of Student Resources for Lifeway Christian Resources. He writes about seniors in high school: “If you are in student ministry leadership then we can agree that you want the best for these seniors. You want them to graduate as students who love the Lord and follow Him. You want them to be a disciple that makes other disciples. We all want those things, yet there are many student ministries that don’t con-sistently operate from a wise discipleship plan. We want the results, yet curriculum is chosen haphazardly, leaders are barely trained, and events are conducted with very little strategy or connection to the ministry and vision of the church. Developing a wise discipleship plan that will help you ap-proach graduation day, and every day for that matter, with confi-dence is something that will take a lot of your time. Simply put, there isn’t a shortcut to this, but it is worth it.” As we develop new plans and new opportunities for discipleship in 2016, I am praying that God will give us wisdom to develop a WISE DISCIPLESHIP PLAN…as Trueblood says there is no short cut, but it will be worth it! I am excited about what this winter holds for us as we continue in our BELIEVE study, and as we learn more about what it means to ACT like Jesus!

Walking with Jesus

Pastor Eric Spivey

The Apostle Paul uses a racing and training analogy to explain how are we are to prepare to life the Christian life. “You’ve all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win. All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You’re after one that’s gold eternally. I don’t know about you, but I’m running hard for the finish line. I’m giving it everything I’ve got. No sloppy living for me! I’m staying alert and in top condition. I’m not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).

January is the perfect time for each of us to get in shape spiritually. Let’s train together. Start by making weekly worship a priority. Next, read the weekly BELIEVE chapter (Books are still available). Finally, participate in a Sunday School class. These classes will become your family and give you an opportunity to talk with others who are training for the same race.

2016 can be a great year. Let’s start training! See you Sunday.

We anticipate many great things in 2016: a new, full time, Minis-ter of Children and Servant Min-istry, a unified mission offering and structure, a new discipleship structure and model, a new web-site to tell our FBC God story, and a re-prioritized deacon ministry.

We need your help to make these investments and more in God’s Kingdom at FBC possible. For 2016 we will have new offering FBC envelopes. Rather than mail them to you bi-monthly, each family will receive a box of enve-

lopes in the middle of February for the rest of 2016. Each box will contain a Ministry Budget Tithe envelope for each Sunday and one Unified Mission Offering envelope per month. For those who cannot pick up their boxes at the church, we will mail them to you

Members can also use our web-site to give online to support both our Ministry Tithe Budget and our Unified Mission Budget. Go to www.fbccornelia.org and look on the right hand side for the green “Give Online” tab.

If you have any questions or problems in the transition to new envelopes, contact Jarvis McFarlin, Church Administrator (706.778.4412 or [email protected]). 2016 will be a great year – Thanks to You!

Times for training to follow.

As we continue our Believe study, we are asked the question “How do I honor God in the way he deserves?” Mark 12:30 reads, “Worship is one gift that he who has nothing can give to Him who owns everything”. When we don’t think we have anything to give God, we can worship Him.

Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord;Let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.

Let us come before him with thanksgivingAnd extol him with music and song. Psalm 95:1-2

During this next series of Believe, we are called to ACT on what we BELIEVE. Together, let’s use our time and talents to worship a mighty God who desires for us to worship Him. Let’s sing, dance, play instru-ments, pray, read scripture, usher, greet, and fellowship together as we collectively offer our praise to Him on Sunday mornings. I look forward to worshipping with you! Blessings,

Bobby

If possible could you please express my gratitude by way of one of your pub-lications. I would like to say “Thank You” in person but this is not possible this time. Blessings to all of your Wonderful Fellowship.

6:15 in the Fellowship Hall

To: Our church staff; Those who provided, prepared & served our meal; Those who cleaned up afterwards; and “Donna” our Very Talented Entertainer,

The clapping of our hands by us, who so benefited from these services, just does not say it all–neither will these words. But we, who enjoyed the pleasure of your services, feel a real need to allow our gratitude to find expression in simple, but sincere words. Thus, it is with loving and sincere Thanks, that I offer this thought –I have never known a more noble gift by the Young, to the Older; along with that thought, that those, who provided us with these services, will some day in the natural order of matters, be so honored by the Young of their day.

Sincerely,

Tom Carter
