Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: Happy Easter to all! (1) “How is the date of Easter determined?” The Catholic Church cele-brates Easter on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox (March 21). Therefore, Easter is always celebrated in the Catholic Church on a Sunday between March 22 & April 25. The Orthodox Church uses the ancient Julian calendar introduced by Julius Caesar in 46 BC (rather than the Gregorian calendar introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in

1582) to determine the celebration of Easter, so that is why members of the Orthodox Church celebrate Easter on another date. (2) The Paschal candle is a special symbol representing the light of Christ in the world. Sometimes called the Easter candle, usually the largest in every Catholic church, it is a symbol of light (life) dispelling darkness (sin & death). The candle recalls how God, by way of a pillar of fire at night (and a cloud during the day), led the Hebrews out of slavery in Egypt to freedom and the Promised Land. The candle is lit during liturgies of the Easter season, at baptisms and at funerals. The newly baptized are given a smaller candle lit from the Paschal candle and instructed “to walk as children of the light.” Why do we call it the “Paschal” candle? The United States Catholic Catechism for Adults explains: “Above all, it is in the Paschal Mystery which is the saving Passion, death, and Resurrection of Jesus, that we participate most profoundly in the mystery of Christ. Here is the heart of the Kingdom and salvation to which we are called. In Christ we die to self and sin. We rise to participate in his divine life through the Resurrection. This is made possible for us through the Sacraments” (chapter 7). Clearly, the Paschal candle represents the most profound aspects of Chris-tian belief. (3) What is the origin of Easter eggs? There are several theories. According to Henry Kelly, a professor at the University of California, the beginnings date to medie-val Europe. The strict fasting rules of the time barred eating any animal products during Lent, but hens kept laying eggs anyway! So Christians would hard-boil and store their eggs for later. Some of the eggs would be given to the poor and villagers brought them as Easter gifts to the lords of their manor. Eggs would sometimes be brought to church as a Good Friday offering. Decorating them began in England around 1290 when King Edward I bought 450 eggs to be colored or covered in gold leaf to be distributed. The first Easter Egg Roll at the White House was held in 1878. (4) A reminder about our online giving service: Good Shepherd Parish has an online giving service called WeShare. For more information and to set up your account, go to www.GoodShepherdParish.us and then click Online Giving. You can make a onetime or recurring donation using your credit card, checking or savings account. I myself use this method of contributing to the parish. (5) In January 2017, Bishop Deeley promulgated Three Beliefs, a guide for Maine Catholics regarding end-of-life decisions. This 20-page document offers valuable assistance and guidance to Catholics and others on a variety of end-of-life issues. It explains Catholic teaching on life-sustaining treatment & care, and includes the Maine Advance Directive form modified to ensure consistency with both Catholic teaching and Maine law. We have distributed copies at all our church locations and the document is available in its entirety at the parish office or online at www.portlanddiocese.org/threebeliefs. (6) One of my pleasant duties each week is to choose a joke from the thousands collected by Monsignor Arthur Tonne, published in 9 volumes. I purchased them over a dozen years ago, and with their purchase received permission to copy them as long as I cited the source. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I do. Msgr. Tonne was 9 weeks short of his 99th birthday when he died in 2003. He was famous for his joke-telling and once appeared on the David Letterman Show. He wrote many other books including collections of wedding and funeral homilies and a biography of Chaplain Emil Kapaun (a Kansas born Catholic priest/U.S. Army chaplain who died while a prisoner of war during the Korean War; he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and his cause to sainthood is being promoted in the Diocese of Wichita). Monsignor Tonne is buried in Pilsen, Kansas where he served as priest. (7) Thank You of the Week: To parishioners who crafted and attached the special hand-sewn, matching coverings for the paschal (Easter) candles in all our churches. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 9 - Msgr. Tonne: “I’ll be right back,” said the doctor, giving a huge pill to the patient who’d complained of a sore ankle. The man dutifully swallowed the pill and awaited the doctor’s return. “Now,” said the doctor, handing the man a bucket, “drop the pill in here and soak your foot.”

A Blessing of Homes During Eastertime

O God, make the door of this house wide enough to receive all who need human love and fellowship,

and narrow enough to shut out all envy, pride and strife.

Make its threshold smooth enough to be no stumbling block to children, nor to straying feet, but rugged and strong enough to turn back the

tempter's power. God, make the door to this house the gateway to

your eternal kingdom. Grant this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION ASSOCIATION OF

SOUTHERN MAINE: Lord in your great love, answer me... Psalm 69. We are blessed to have the only full-time adoration chapel in the state of Maine nestled in the heart of Good Shepherd Parish. It is located on Thornton Avenue in Saco in the former Notre Dame Sisters’ residence. There, Jesus waits for us to bring our thanks, our petitions, our prayers, our conversation, our love. Scheduled adorers keep the chapel open, but

some have to discontinue because of illness, death, moves, or other changes in their lives. Please consider being a scheduled adorer by

setting up just one hour to be your visit time each week. You won’t be sorry! FMI: Please contact one of the following division leaders:

--Steve Plante……midnight to 6:00 am……283-0782 --Priscilla Welch… 6:00 am to noon………..289-4220 / 710-1913 --Lucille Simard…. noon to 6:00 pm………..284-7627 --Virginia Calvo…. 6:00 pm to midnight……432-1151
