Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) A concelebrated funeral Mass was celebrated for Father Claude Albert, a priest of the Diocese of Portland, at St. Martha Church in Kennebunk on January 25. My dear friend died on January 19 at age 79. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. (2) National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. This year, it is

being observed January 29 through February 4 with the theme of “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” We are very much looking forward to Bishop Deeley’s visit to Saint James School this Monday, January 30. (3) World Day of Consecrated Life: As we approach the annual celebration of consecrated life on February 2, I again recall how I have been personally enriched by such women and men: Ursuline sisters taught me in grammar school, Brothers of Christian Instruction in junior high, Assumptionist brothers & priests in high school & college, and Jesuit priests at university during my seminary years (I still remember the formidable Sister Monica who taught me New Testament Greek in the seminary; I struggled mightily with the subject matter and regularly sat in the back row, hiding behind a tall student, hoping she wouldn’t see and call on me)! My mother’s aunt was a Missionary Sister of Our Lady of Africa, my father’s aunt and sister were both Sisters of Charity of St. Hyacinthe (“Grey Nuns” associated with St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston); my father’s cousin was a provincial of the Brothers of Christian Instruction. As a priest, I have served alongside Sisters of St. Joseph, Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Sisters of Mercy, Holy Rosary Sisters, Good Shepherd Sisters, Dominican Sisters, and Capuchin, Vincentian & Holy Cross priests. I am sure I am forgetting some fine people, but you can see why I so much admire these women and men religious who have profoundly enriched my life. Here in Good Shepherd Parish, Father Dominic is a member of the Apostles of Jesus, and we welcome missionaries every summer who usually are mem-bers of various religious communities. I marvel at how consecrated women and men have contributed and continue to contribute to church life in our community; there are many parishes in Maine these days who only rarely experience the ministry of even a single woman religious. We should all be grateful for the special vocation to conse-crated life that enriches the Catholic Church in so many fruitful ways. (4) “A Scout is Reverent.” Our parish will welcome boy scouts to Mass next Sunday, February 5, at St. Philip Church. Interested units are invited to arrive for 8:30 in order to line up and join a procession as Scouts and Scouters for the Mass, beginning at 9:00 am. A recep-tion will follow in the church hall. (5) Thank You of the Week: In each of our Good Shepherd churches, green “Clynk” bags are available for parishioners who wish to take them home, fill them with returnables and deliver them to a Hannaford Clynk location. A married couple in the parish gets the bags we need, places Good Shepherd stickers on them, brings them to the parish office for all of our four churches, and re-plenishes the bags as needed. The money we receive benefits our youth ministry. Last year, this couple quietly helped us raise around $1,500 so our youth could attend the annual springtime Catholic youth convention in Portland. Thank you! Please consider donating your returnables to this good cause. JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 7 - Msgr. Tonne:

SUPPORT SEEDS OF HOPE NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER: Their Mission Statement reads, “The Seeds of Hope Neighborhood Center collaborates with our local communities to fight the causes of

poverty, isolation and despair. It accomplishes this Mission by offering hospitality and support to all who pass through our doors, including free

expanded continental breakfast/lunch, new and gently used clothing, job search support, and health and educational programming within a caring community.” In support of their work with the less fortunate,

Social Justice is sponsoring “UNDIE SUNDAY” to supply new packages of plain cotton underwear (tee shirts, briefs, panties)

and white socks in a variety of sizes for men and women. Though people may donate clothing to the Center, new underwear and socks are always needed. Boxes will be

available at each church until Feb. 19 for your contributions.

Offertory Collection Report through Fiscal Year Week 29 00000000

*includes second collections Week Year to Date* Jan 14-15, 2017 $ 28,192 $ 854,577 Jan 16-17, 2016** $ 20,340 $ 864,130

Difference $ 7,852 $ (9,553) -1.1% **Note: Due to a snowstorm on this weekend last year, attendance and offertory were significantly impacted.

Second Collection This Weekend: Catholic School Sponsorship ‒ This collection assists any active parishioners who send their children to

St. James School. They receive the benefit of parish assistance, repre-senting the willingness of the parish to support their choice of a Catholic

education. Eligible families receive tuition relief indirectly since the parish is funding a part of the total cost of education.

Second Collection Next Weekend: Winter Operations ‒ As the name implies, is merely a way to more broadly appeal for your support to cover all winter specific expenses. This would include purchases of

equipment, such as shovels and snow blowers, bags of salt, additional labor costs associated with snow clearing, weatherizing doors and

windows, contracted snow clearing services and lastly, heating fuel. Your support is always appreciated.

PARISH DONATIONS & CHARITABLE DEDUCTIONS:

Please be aware that the parish office can only track your offertory dona-tions in our Parish Database when you use your OFFERTORY ENVE-LOPES! All donations received through your envelopes are recorded to your account. We are happy to provide you with a record of your dona-

tions if need be. We began processing requests in mid January, and prefer handling these via email in order to reduce administrative costs to the parish. Please email your request to [email protected]

with 2016 GSP Contribution Statement in the subject line, or call 282-3321x105, leaving your name, address, and Envelope ID please.

Tax law requires that we acknowledge receipt of any single donation of $250 or more with a letter, which is standard procedure. However,

smaller amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are deposited to the

bank. You must then rely on your canceled check and bank statements, as record for your donation. If you would like to receive Envelopes,

please contact the parish office. For parishioners who donate through WESHARE, our online giving

service, you are able to obtain your record of giving / donations directly from your WESHARE account.

Thank you for your generosity and cooperation!

WESHARE GIVING FEES: We are pleased to see so many parishioners taking advantage of this

service. It does make offertory administration easier and safer, but like anything else, the service to the parish is NOT free.

Fees apply to transactions as follows:

Withdrawal from your Checking or Savings (ACH): 1% of donation amount + .10 cents per transaction. Take for example, a $20 donation; fees are $0.20 + $0.10 or $0.30 total.

Credit Card or Debit Card payment: 3.25% of donation amount + .10 cents. If the same $20 donation above is paid by credit/debit card, the fee is $0.65 + $0.10 or a total of $0.75.

As you can see the credit/debit card fees are more than double. Please consider this when deciding on your source of payment.

Thank you for your generosity.
