Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) The Catholic Church concludes the Christmas season with this feast of the Baptism of the Lord. On Monday, we resume Ordinary Time until Ash Wednesday. (2) Care of the Sick and Dying: Anointing the Sick, Priest on Call, & SMHC Chaplain: If you know you will be going to the hospital for surgery or other reason, I urge you to ask a priest to administer the Sacrament of the Sick before or after any Mass rather than wait until the last moment when no priest may be immediately available. This is something

every priest is happy to do; your family and friends are welcome to join you so they can pray for you too. It only takes a few minutes; just ask! For serious, unexpected illness, a Good Shepherd priest is on call at all times (but may be delayed by the administration of other sacraments). At Southern Maine Health Center in Biddeford and at other institu-tions in the parish, ask any staff person to contact the Catholic priest on call. Or you can call the church office (282-3321). Also, Good Shepherd Parish and Holy Spirit Parish (Kennebunk/Wells/Ogunquit) support the salary of a pastoral care worker at SMHC. Her name is Marie LaBrecque, and she is a lifelong Good Shepherd parishioner. When patients identify themselves as Catholics upon admission, Marie visits them, ensures that they receive Holy Communion if they so desire, and communicates with the priest on-call should anyone need the anointing of the sick or prayers for the dying. In this she is helped by extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. We owe a great debt of thanks to all these wonderful people, including those who regularly bring Holy Communion to the homebound. In Scarborough, priests from Cluster 22 (Scarborough, Cape Elizabeth/ S. Portland) are available as needed for patients at the Gosnell House hospice; members of the Gosnell House staff know how best to contact them. In Portland, there are priest-chaplains at Mercy Hospital, and the Catholic Appeal supports several priests serving the needs of patients at Maine Medical Center. (3) I also want to ensure that the Eucharist is brought to the homebound and residents of nursing facilities. If you are going to experience short or long term convalescence and cannot make it to Mass for a few weeks or many months, you (or a friend) should inform the parish office so a minister can be assigned to bring you Communion. (4) Important dates for the 2020 Church year: Ash Wednesday (February 26), Easter Sunday (April 12), Confirmation & First Communion for children (April 18), Ascension Thursday (May 21), Ordination to priesthood of Deacon Alex Boucher & First Mass (May 30/31), Pentecost (May 31), First Sunday of Advent (November 29). Parishioners may want to note these dates in their personal calendars. (5) On the weekend of July 28, 2019, we observed Participation Weekend for Shepherds of Hope. This was the start of the fully public phase of a parish-wide capital campaign for Good Shepherd Parish. Twenty-three weeks later, as of Jan. 7, 2020, we have received 665 gifts and pledges amounting to $1,392,354 or some 70% of our $2,000,000 goal. I am happy to report that pledges and gifts have been given every week since the start of this 5-year campaign. I find this ongoing support immensely encourag-ing, and I hope you do too! Also, please do not complete more than one pledge card. It is important for us to receive a signed pledge card from all donors, but after you have made a pledge or one-time gift, your information will have been logged on our Campaign Spreadsheet. If you are making a payment on a pledge it is important we are able to distinguish between an Offertory donation and a donation to Shepherds of Hope. It is very helpful if you write SOH (for Shepherds of Hope) and simply note your campaign ID or even your envelope number on your envelope or check memo line to ensure we apply your payment properly. The Campaign ID is reflected on the quarterly statements the parish issues to those with a pledge balance. The next statement will be mailed this month (JAN 2020). (6) Every year, many Christian churches observe a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity beginning on January 18 and concluding on January 25, the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. On the night before he died, Jesus prayed for unity among his disciples: “I pray…that they may all be one, as you, Father, are I me and I in you’ (John 17:20-21). Nonetheless, it has been nearly one thousand years since the Eastern and Western Churches divided into Catholic and Orthodox. And it has been over 500 years since Martin Luther’s calls for reform resulted in a division that was to be called the Protestant Reformation. The continuing lack of unity is a profound scandal that seriously harms the ability of followers of Christ to be effective in living and sharing the Gospel. In obedience to the Lord’s will, we must be prayerfully supportive of any efforts that help build up the unity of believers while avoiding any kind of speech or action that would inflame causes that encourage disunity. I want to note in a special way Catholics and Christians of other denominations who enter into Christian marriage and live at the front lines of living in peace despite what can be enormous challenges. In some parts of the world, people of differing faiths are persecuting and even killing one another. I see our “mixed marriages” lived in integrity of faith as exceptional expressions of mutual respect and love as we struggle to be obedient to the will of Jesus Christ. (7) Thank You of the Week: To the parishioner who made it possible to provide remote coverage of the 4:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass in St. Joseph Church hall with the help of a cameraman, ushers, a cantor, and Eucharistic ministers. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Volume 2 by Msgr. Arthur Tonne: A tourist entered a country store in Vermont and found a group of local men idling by the stove. The tourist tried time after time to get a conversation going, but with no success. “Well,” he escaped finally, “is it against the law to talk around here?” “Ain’t no law against it,” said the native. “But around here a man don’t speak lest he’s sure he can improve on the silence.”

PARISH LITURGIES

Good Shepherd Parish The Baptism of the Lord January 12, 2020

We try to list the name of the priest who will cele-brate every scheduled weekend Mass. However, this schedule may be changed without notice.

SHEPHERDS OF HOPE PLEDGES: For parishioners that have not yet made a pledge, we need your HELP! Please pray about taking that step. There should still be cards at each church or the parish office, so fill one out or take it home for prayerful consideration. Bring the pledge to

the office/mail to: Good Shepherd Parish, 271 Main St, Saco. NOTE: Any Checks/Cash can be dropped in the collection basket, in-side a blank envelope, AND must have a name & ID number in order to receive credit on a pledge. Check payments should be made out to: Good Shepherd Parish with “Shepherds Of Hope” in the memo line.

Current totals: 665 household gifts * $1,392,354 * 70% of goal

We have created a live link with the Shepherds of Hope logo on the Homepage of our website (https://goodshepherdparish.us/). Just click the logo and it will take you to where you need to be to get started. If you need assistance, call Amy Loring at the parish office: 282-3321x105. Please be aware that with the convenience comes a price. WESHARE does charge a fee on each transaction as follows:

* ACH withdrawals from bank account - the fee is a flat 10 cents per transaction plus 1%, calculated as follows: For example, a $50 donation will have a charge of 50 cents, plus 10 cents, for a total fee of 60 cents. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $49.40.

* Credit Card / Debit Card Transactions - the fee is 3.25%, calculated as follows:

Using the same $50 donation example as above, the 3.25% transaction fee will amount to a charge of $1.63. The $50 donation results in a net donation to the parish of $48.37.

Since the Credit/Debit card fees are more than double ACH fees, we do prefer use of ACH. Please consider this when deciding on your source of payment. Thank you for your generosity.

SHEPHERDS of HOPE PLEDGE PAYMENTS: Please note that if you intend on using ACH or your Credit Card for payment and/or installments on your Shepherds of Hope pledge, you must do so by signing into the parish’s online giving service: WESHARE. Please do not include your bank account information or credit card number on the pledge card. Simply go to the parish website to sign up and make a payment or set up recurring payments. If you do decide to use WESHARE please mark that on your pledge card so we handle the pledge properly. Thanks so much.

Notes regarding Masses/Mass Times:

During the winter months please check weather listings for school opening delays, cancellations, and parking bans in each church community. Cancellation of the daily Mass is tied to these community advisories as well! Consult the parish website and/or app during storm conditions for updates on closings. Our decisions are based on safety for all concerned when snow & ice

create hazardous travel conditions. Overnight winter storms make cleaning our parking lots and priest travel in the early morning hours,

very difficult. Thank you for your understanding.

PARISH DONATIONS & CHARITABLE DEDUCTIONS:

Please be aware that the parish office can only track your offertory donations in our Parish Database when you use your Offertory Envelopes. All donations received through your envelopes are recorded to your account. We are happy to provide you with a donation record if requested. Due to staff medical leave, we will begin processing requests this year in February, and prefer handling these via email in order to reduce adminis-trative costs to the parish. Requests can be made as follows:

• Visit our website to fill out the request form for your recorded dona-tion amount: www.goodshepherdparish.us/annual-donation-report (most preferred way) or

• Email [email protected] with 2019 GSP Contribution Statement in the subject line. Leave your name, Envelope Number, address, email & phone number or

• Call the parish office at 207-282-3321 x105, leaving the same info noted above.

WESHARE donors through our online giving service, you are able to obtain your record of giving / donations directly from your WESHARE account. Please avail yourselves to it. The information you need is available immediately!

Due to the large number of requests received we ask that you please be patient. We will do our very best to respond as quickly as possible.

Be advised: All Souls donations are non-deductible since a Mass is given for those intentions.

Tax law requires that we acknowledge receipt of any single donation of $250 or more with a letter, which is standard procedure. However, smaller amounts donated by check to the collection basket that are not in Offertory Envelopes are not recorded, but simply are scanned and deposited to the bank. You must then rely on your canceled check and bank statements, as record for your donation. If you would like to receive Envelopes, please contact [email protected].

THANK YOU ALL in advance for your cooperation and generosity throughout the year! We wish you all God’s Blessing, Peace and Joy

this Christmas Season.

MANY THANKS FOR GIVING TREE GIFTS!

On behalf of Good Shepherd parishioners, gift requests were fulfilled for Veterans living in Biddeford and Saco as well as

residents of Esther House and the Maine Way. In addition, warm winter scarves, hats, mittens and gloves

were distributed to Stone Soup, the Biddeford Food Pantry, Milestone, Seeds of Hope, and elementary school students in Lyman and Old Orchard Beach. We are determined to help keep our brothers and sisters warm during this cold winter

season. YOU, the PARISHIONERS OF GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH, once again made Christmas much brighter by

remembering those in need.

GOD BLESS YOU ALL FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
