June 2016

From The Council THANK YOU! This is for your

expressed enthusiasm and support for Good Shepherd’s physical expansion with the acquisition of 1600 Executive Court. In May our congregation turned out in strong force for the two informational meetings and the Special Membership Vote. Approval of the “1600 Project” was unanimously received on May 22 with a vote of 138 in favor and 11 opposed. The Membership clearly spoke and said we are not satisfied with the status quo; rather we are ready to physically grow and meet the needs of an expanding congregation through personal financial

support.

The “1600 Project” will be the new home for our church staff. Shortly alterations will begin to better accommodate their work space needs. Updates

will be communicated weekly.

The fundraising theme is “Give to Grow…grow your faith - grow our church”. Look for special giving envelopes in the Sunday bulletin and through the mail, then watch our “Giving Tree” grow weekly with your contributions. Already there have been several very generous seeds planted. Again I say thank you and welcome to a new chapter in Good Shepherd’s life and service

to the Lord.

In Christ,

Doug Stewart

Council President

Home Communion Did you know that there is a group of people who are willing and able to bring home communion

to those who are unable to leave home? These dedicated folks serve communion once a month

to those who are ill, or homebound. You can also ask for a home visit from one of the deacons or

even just a phone call to share a time of prayer over the phone. If this ministry would bless you or

if you know someone who has been unable to attend church in awhile, please, please call the

church office and give us contact information. (916) 483-0451.

Library Book Review Angels in Our Midst Submitted by Vicki Roda

"Angels in Our Midst” is a collection of true stories in which ordinary human beings have had rather extraordinary encounters with heavenly messengers. It is a quick read – one or two evenings – and

is uplifting and positive.

You are invited to ponder the tales of ministering spirits who by their presence provide not just assistance and support, but the reassuring evidence of a loving God who is forever watching over us. And when you finish it's likely you will have a new appreciation of phenomena that heretofore you may have only sensed. This inspirational book of angels may cause you to look back over your life and recall certain inexplicable happenings that left you puzzled or in awe. It is then that you will understand some of the mystery and beauty of

the events related in these stories so that you, too, may hear "the swish of passing wings."

Camp iMPACT- Summer 2k16

What We Have Planned and Why

For 15+ years now, Arden neighborhood families have had an opportunity for their

kids to participate in our free summer camp program held on Good Shepherd’s

campus.

This summer, we will be open for 6-weeks (June 27-Aug 4) and our theme will be:

“Submerged: Finding Truth Below the Surface.”

Why this theme? Well, one of our Girls of Grace is adamant about getting

baptized this summer-- via submersion! We hope to make this happen for her on our iMPACT Sunday (when neighborhood kids/

youth takeover the 11am service) scheduled for August 7th.

Why so many kiddos? In 2012, iMPACT experienced a major shift in our camps when youth that typically “aged-out” at 6th grade--

started coming back! So, we implemented a Jr./Sr. Camp Counselor program and had them take part in leading activities. Since

then, attendance has more than doubled with an average of 75 kids/day.

With this growth, we now organize camps into 3 main areas:

Camp (Serving K-5th graders in the Fellowship Hall)

Leadership Academy (6th-8th grade youth enroll to learn about life skills, social

justice issues, and character building; held in the Youth Room)

Resume Café Job Training (9th-12th graders must be enrolled in our job training

program to help at our camps)

A Day at Camp: Feed the kids, build relationships, have fun, and learn about

Jesus.

Ministry Philosophy: To teach youth skills that have potential to change their

lives and increase their confidence. We believe this can significantly help lead

them to Christ. When youth see “goodness” in themselves (sometimes for the first time)—they’re more open to the concept of a

loving Savior. They can then see His goodness and light.

This is our approach to outreach. It’s the premise behind iMPACT’s training in holistic, transformational Urban youth ministry. And

we pray that it impacts the community and a whole new generation of believers.

How to Get Involved: We love and need your support through volunteers, donations, and prayer! We will post “Current Camp

Needs & Volunteer Opportunities” in the weekly church bulletin and Impact Outreach Facebook page starting in June.

Hello Friends of the Preschool

I want to thank the many friends who helped to make our bake sale

successful. Our bake sale raised $868.00 from the sales and cash

donations made to our cause. Our tricycle is being enjoyed by the

preschool children. Thank you. With our extra funds, a new scooter and

some science center manipulatives will be purchased to enhance our

learning environment.

We also want to thank Stephanie

McCall’s friend, Stephanie (not a

typo) for sharing her African

Spurred Tortoise, Dexter with us.

Dexter came to school last year for

a visit, and we were excited to see

how much Dexter had grown. Stephanie also brought her Bearded

Dragon, Stark to visit us. This was truly an exciting time for the

preschool.

This month we kick off our Summer Theme: DINOSAURS

We will be learning all about the humungous reptiles of long ago. If you have a love of dinosaurs and would

like to share your knowledge with us, we would love to have you

come and talk to the children. Please contact me at 916-483-0466.

We are accepting enrollment for the summer, and also for the

2016-2017 preschool school year.

Thank you for your continuing support, you help make Good

Shepherd Preschool great.
